Gibson (temporarily) fills in as a possible #2 in Arizona's tank for Bedard. Updated goalie depth charts, Philly is the only other team possibly with an NHL spot open. Their intended backup got stuck in Russia and ended up signing a shady extension to stay out of trouble. Montreal seemingly still needs to add another AHL goalie at some point.

There was one poster on here that was mad that we traded that 2nd round pick for Palmieri and he would have still been available at that spot had we kept the pick.

I know it wasn't you, but I clearly remember laughing about it.

You remember laughing about it? How about dragging their ass for years for it? In a good natured ribbing sort of way but…

It seemed to end after 3 years lol.

My favorite part of the original post:

“Sprong's got potential to be one of the best offensive players from this draft, even better than our first round pick this year.”
All that’s ridiculous because our 2016 1st is uh, slightly more useful than Sprong.

If you do a search for Spring Roll and my username, you might find a few more, as I remember naming him that to bust the balls of the poster that wanted Sprong over Palmieri.

Somehow I remember that softy of the night on Crawford, but only after you brought it up. I believe it was a dead angle short side shot between the post and Crawford. I try to refrain from giving those types of goals the softy of the night anymore, just because of how common they are. I didn’t realize how common they were until I started watching every single goal in the league for years now. I still give them a stoppable goal, but I try not to give it softy of the night unless I can’t find another one worthy or it’s a slow game night with only a couple of games the entire evening.

The fact that anybody thought he would be a star and then claiming Palmieri was just a 2nd/3rd line tweener…..

At this rate, he may get 8 by default even if he regresses (he won't).
The board had more than a few posts saying $6.5-$7.0 million was fair for Bratt and there was no way Bratt would have turned down $7.5 if it was offered.

Now we haven’t even played 1 more game and people think Bratt may be asking for $8 million or more for his next contract.

So as much as it stinks for the cap, it looks like Bratt’s agent was probably correct to turn down any offer under $8 million. Assuming the goal is to maximize earnings and not lock in future earnings.

The <$7m contracts were for lower years. All the 7+ year deals were talked about being over $7m.

Its still a risk. If Bratt gets injured then he may not get a long term deal at all. Gets injured this year, 1 year deal next year going to UFA. Then he possibly hits UFA the year before the flat cap goes away so his agent is pushing another 1 year deal.

There is a reason most agents tell the players to take the long term deals when they are offered instead of trying to game the system.

This is just wild speculation on my part but I have a feeling that the next time Bratt and Fitz sit down for contract negotiations, Bratt ends up signing a long-term deal instead of heading for Free Agency.

I didn’t see Bratt necessarily signing a 7-8 year deal this off-season because most wingers coming off of bridge deals haven’t. They have typically signed shorter deals to set up a final last UFA deal.

I also thought the team might have been more comfortable with something slightly shorter.

Both Thompson, coming off a 3 year/1.4m deal, and Kyrou, coming off a 2 year/2.8m deal, are a new trends. Players are cashing in on the predicted salary cap rise and teams want to lock in some cost control pieces.

Bratt will be 25 next off-season, a 7-8 year deal probably makes the most sense.

Bratt Contract Watch sucked this summer, 0/10 do not recommend, but I don’t see the point of worrying about it when we know nothing can be done (outside of an out of the blue shocking trade).

The worst case scenarios include the already mentioned dark visions of an injury lost season. I would also add him having a huge season and the team being miserably bad. We don’t have to rocket up the standings but overall improvement and good vibes would likely help on both sides.

The Athletic released their list of the top 100 players:

1663246392494.png

The Big Debate: Is Jack Hughes a franchise player?

When we started this exercise, the panel agreed that Jack Hughes belonged in Tier 2. The 2019 No. 1 pick had arrived in 2021-22 scoring 56 points in 49 games, looking like a true driver at even strength. An emerging superstar.

The process was already there for Hughes in 2020-21 as one of the league’s best players with the puck, but the results weren’t. It’s why everyone picked him as their breakout candidate for the 2021-22 season — he looked like someone whose production was ready to explode. And he delivered.

The question was whether 49 games of elite play was enough, or if we were getting ahead of ourselves. We initially felt what he showed when he was healthy, combined with his elite skating and playmaking ability, put him among the very best centers in the league.

The NHL disagreed. Almost every source we talked to in the league said Hughes wasn’t there. Yet.

“He has the potential to be that type of player, and may be that good very soon, but I think it’s aggressive putting him there this early,” said one NHL scout.

“He’s going to be a phenomenal hockey player that will be in that higher bucket. Is today the right spot for that? He’s going to be in that group, no question. Just is it too soon?” said one analyst.

After further deliberation and incorporating input from the league, we conceded. Look, we’re all huge fans of Hughes and wouldn’t be shocked if he rocketed up to Tier 1 status by the end of next year. But 49 games isn’t much, and it’s a number that’s out of line with how we’d previously approached young players. Hughes also had a slower start to his NHL career than expected, and the full body of work is certainly not elite even when adjusted for age.

With most of the panel and NHL sources believing Hughes will be in Tier 2 or higher shortly, it was a worthy debate. But we need more — he’s just not there yet.

...

Dougie Hamilton’s first season in New Jersey was a bit of a mess. On one hand, his track record suggests he’ll come closer to living up to his contract ($9 million through 2028). On the other, the Devils don’t have anyone approaching a Jaccob Slavin-caliber partner to roll out next to him.

...

Nico Hischier was a player who just barely squeezed into the top 100 last year and then had a career season for the Devils. Some of that may have been driven by his team shooting over 11 percent when he’s on the ice, but Hischier is an excellent player. He has a ton of skill, he can play with pace and contribute at both ends of the rink. Is he more than a decent first-line center? Probably not. But on a team with Jack Hughes, he doesn’t need to be.

Not a bad take on Jack, do have an issue with calling Hischier's year as "career season", that's a term I always hold to older players like Chris Kreider who at 31 had a legit "career season".

I guess for me to have to hit your peak to qualify for this term.

Yeah this has Bobby V in Boston type meltdown potential
That’s always been Torts MO. Running his guys down in the press instead of talking to them directly. I remember him doing that in in NY too. But the way things are changing culturally in the younger generations of players, he’s even more of a dinosaur now.

It’s too bad. Because he has a good fundamental grasp of the game and a decent and reliable, if quite boring, system of play. But as usual his character is his destiny.

Ah, good ole Christopher Gibson. Another bizarre DD favorite, particularly when he got a bunch of starts for the Islanders in the 16-17 season. Now that I look at it, that had to be the 17-18 season, as he didn't play in the NHL in 16-17 and only appeared in 4 games and 2 starts in 15-16. He had 8 games and 8 starts in 17-18.

Except one of them has won championships.
49811.jpg

Exactly. Keep preaching, as you are unfortunately very correct.

Many NJD fans are laughing at Torts and Philthy, but we have no reason to smile. Torts will bring the very best out of that a club. A hockey club which is already very underrated, as it certainly doesn't look like a bad club without Torts. Add Torts to that and they're really poised to have an excellent season. Torts will bring good, hard nosed, hard working, tough, respectable, if not championship caliber and prestige back to Philthy and their franchise.

And just remember that the NJD can't beat Torts. Just look at our record against Columbus while he was there.

Wins over Philthy just became that much harder to come by with the Torts hire. Torts just refuses to lose to the NJD.

That may have been you, but I don’t really remember you particularly saying it.

I remember one poster saying it (I clearly remember his user name too, but he may have since had a name change, but I think I recall seeing him around as of some point last season with the same name) and he mentioned it more than once. Especially in GDT’s when the team was losing or Palmieri would have a cold streak.

So I assumed the screen shot posts were from him, but perhaps they weren’t?

Not under that very colorful user name, “Hockey Sports Fan”, no.

It’s easy to search for, I just didn’t want to derail it by posting it with his name. I guessed that if Bleed remembered that take he probably made fun (in a pretty gentle way!) for years.

Hell, Devils Dominion is still a elaborate running comedy bit. Granted his old posts related to the Florida Panthers were a psychological journey for readers. (This board doesn’t appreciate how good they are! Or will be! Well if they’re bad, what does that make us? Let’s bring in main board poll data to the conversation. Etc blah blah Etc)

Not going to lie, when I found these posts I was slightly disappointed they only went to 2018, it would have been funnier if it went on longer.

If the mystery is too much and people are too lazy to search for it, I can spill the beans. (The first post is the OP.)
