Never worry about over paying young players. It's old ones that kill you apparently. Unless they're UFAs.

Stutzle gets 10.12% of cap, for his second year of 58 points. It's obviously a contract based on potential, as he hasn't earned that type of contract as of yet.

Nylander got 8.76% of the cap, for two years of 61 points, and most of the rest of the NHL called it an overpay.

Of course they've got Stutzle signed in for eight years, so it might look like a pretty good contract, if he can become a point per game player, plus.

Sophomore years:

Marner (W) 22G, 69P - $10.9M (~11.9M for 8 years)
Stutzle (C) 22G, 58P - $8.2M
Nylander (W) 22G, 61P - $6.9M (~7.9M for 8 years)

Stutzle was on a much worse team, plays center, signed a year earlier than Nylander, and at two years younger.

Its a good deal for Ottawa. I'm sure they are banking on him progressing next year into the 70+ point range with Debrincat and Giroux, whereas Nylander stayed flat and then signed.

But then you get really dumb hot takes like this:

Yeah I saw sens fans on the main board signing thread already saying that Stutzle will be better than Marner

I mean its possible, but Marner is a top 5 player in his position right now. Stutzle has yet to show that he is elite at 5 on 5. His 5 on 5 points per 60 actually got worse last year compared to his rookie year. He will have better linemates next year, but that doesnt guarantee a drastic increase as teams will be playing him even harder. He definitely doesnt have Marner's IQ, playmaking and vision yet.

Stutzle is built more athletic and powerful and explosive that Marner so maybe that implies more potential for some people… but he’s got a long way to go to even catch up to Marner offensively and defensively. They’re also converting him to center full time and this will be the first season there are expectations and Big AAV’s in Ottawa so the heat will be turned up.

This, as well as the Rob Thomas deal, are exactly how Dubas should have handled Mitch and Willy, but of course it wasn’t, because he is smart.

Good for Stutzle, this money added to all the jack he was pulling on the German National Diving Team makes him generationally wealthy.

Thomas was coming off of a 2 year bridge where his career numbers until this breakout year were inferior to Marner and Nylander. Not that comparable.

Stutzle would be similar but unfortunately Dubas didn’t have the opportunity to sign Nylander a year before his ELC expired (that was Lou). Marner was something that should have happened but given how his contract situation played out I can’t see Marner’s camp willing to sign once JT was signed, seeing the potential that was there.

That Stutzle deal is odd from a whole range of perspectives. Firstly, he hasn't proven anywhere near to be worth that, and a healthy amount of his offense has been PP driven.

And even from the players pov - if he does have a true breakout season sooner than later, the cap is set for a potentially large spike within 2-3 seasons. An odd time for an agent to lock in a young player on a longer deal.

I guess Sens are focused mostly on getting guys to commiting their futures.to the team first before worrying about cap overpayments later

One strong reason is that with Melynk's death, their futre ownership in question they're investing in their young core now to hopefully boost the appeal.

They've got Stutzle, Norris, Chabot, Batherson all signed for 5+ years .. plus Giroux for the next 3. Largely based on their potential.

Given they've had issues retaining quality talent because of cost, they probably want to try to keep their young stars by overpaying for them now, hoping they get better enough to compete, and sell the team at a heightened value.

Not really great comparables when you throw the contracts in there. Marner and Nylander both played through the final years of thwir ELC before signing while Stutzle was signed early.

Ottawa is getting their young core signed long term and have lots of money to build their D around Chabot and Sanderson.

It would not surprise me in the least if Ottawa took the 3rd or 4th spot in the division this season. It's not just Ottawa's elite young talent and incoming star players, it has forward depth as well. Their 6th/7th/8th forwards are Matthieu Joseph, Alex Formenton and Austin Watson (if he can stay out of trouble). I'll grant that the defense and goaltending is iffy.

He doesn’t need to be better than Marner. Everyone gets caught up in my individual is better than yours. He has to be good enough for his contract, either to that pay level and then able to give a little more. The team salary needs to be able to afford a full team of compliments and then Stutzle needs to show in the playoffs he can ramp it up again. That’s what he and the team needs to do. Never mind the comparison. The Maple Leaf guys need to win a round and never mind them either.

In what world is Austin Watson being your 8th best forward a sign of depth? He's a 30 year old 4th line face puncher, has a career highs of 19 points and hasn't averaged more than 12 minutes a game over his last 3 seasons (playing on teams lacking forward depth).

Add in the hard miles from his on ice play style and off ice 'hobbies' and it's not unreasonable to think he's shows up to camp unplayable. I mean Simmonds was 32 when he came here, doesn't have the off ice issues and was at one point a legitimate top end player in the NHL - now he's a 4th line face puncher.

Watson is at best the Sens 10th forward, however Parker Kelly and Mark Kastelic looked alot better last season. The third line as of now is slotted to be Joseph, Pinto, Formenton. Which should be a very hard line to play against and can take some tough matchups. Very fast and defensively responsible. In order to make the playoffs Sanderson has to step in right away and be a top 4 guy and the rest of the team has to gel quickly, lots of turnover. I personally have my doubts for this season but think they should get there next year.

This is the Leafs year to win the Division. Florida took a big step back. Tampa is extremely beat up from 3 consecutive deep runs. Ottawa, Buffalo, Detroit arent there yet. Boston has all these injuries. I think the Leafs run away with the division. Then spots 2 through 7 are really tight.

LONDON, Ont. — Calgary Flames forward Nazem Kadri has donated $1 million to the London Health Sciences Foundation.

The donation will support the ambulatory surgical centre at London Health Sciences Centre in western Ontario. The centre will now be named the Nazem Kadri Surgical Centre in the NHLer's honour.

“It is because of Nazem Kadri’s transformational gift that world-class innovation is made possible, right here in London,” said John MacFarlane, president & CEO at LHSF. “This gift is just the beginning of what is possible at the Nazem Kadri Surgical Centre.”

Kadri, who is from London, Ont., won the Stanley Cup last season with the Colorado Avalanche before signing with Calgary as a free agent.

Now in its second year, the newly named Nazem Kadri Surgical Centre gives patients in need of less complex, low-risk surgeries with an alternative operating location outside of the hospital.

Patients that are deemed low risk by their surgeon can have foot procedures, ankle, hip and knee arthroscopies and ACL repairs performed at the Nazem Kadri Surgical Centre. Over 3,800 patients have received care at the centre in the two years since its founding.

Saw this making the rounds, applies to HF as well

Its so annoying being a leafs fan and trying to discuss anything hockey on the internet.

Talk about a bad contract? Well you can guarantee someone coming in being like "LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLLLLLLLLLLLL YOU OVERPAID MATTHEWS AND MARNER LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL JT" (as if i had some sort of control over the negotiations myself)

Not high on a team doing well in the playoffs? "LOLLL DONT TALK UNTIL THE LEAFS WIN A ROUND"

Mention a player leaving a team? "LMAO CANT WAIT TILL MATTHEWS WALKS IN 2 YEARS"

Can't show the slightest optimism without being hit with 1967, 4-1, 1st round etc etc.

Not to mention the countless people that make their entire identity about hating the Leafs. Theres so many of them on HF its cringe. Theres a Canucks fan with the username on here "Kyle Dubas is a Geek". Like man, how childish do you have to be lmao. I'm also willing to bet that person is over 30 years old so it makes it even more cringe.

It’s very cringe. It’s funny how it’s open season to troll one fan base but if that fan base dare troll any other team they are penalized instantly. We have a pile of other fans that are regular posters here on the Leafs forum. They care more about our team than their own. Lol.

Just step back and relish in the rent-free space in their head

Not quite

7-9 forwards are Formenton , Pinto, Joseph,
Watson is on 4th line.
