Of course it's a bit unfair to cut 1 h presser down to 2 min of sound bytes, but that analogy was hilariously bad.

Edit: anyone else gets a botched Face/off vibe any time they see Rutherford?

I'm pretty sure it's about NHL's viewership being down, but the main reason for that is a reason not on his list, the fact that it is so hard for a lot of viewers to actually watch most of the games.

I also find it funny he mentions the NHL not marketing their stars as one of the reasons for them losing viewers because the one time they actually do market a guy with marketable skills/personality (Zegras) everybody turns on him and hates him for it.

I honestly think personally that outside of the struggle to view games, the people (both fans & people working in the sport) who are deadset on maintaining this old-school mentality when it comes to every single aspect of Hockey both on and off the ice are the biggest reason for the sport not growing, I think Baseball suffers from the same problem, Basketball/Football do not and they do a lot better because of it (probably oversimplifying it, I'm sure there are also factors at play).

Idk if it’s the same case in other regions, but the fact that Bally Sports isn’t on the biggest streaming platforms here is unacceptable. I don’t know many people my age (mid 20s) who pay for cable/satellite anymore. Only way I can watch a game is on illegal sites.

Oh viewership. So basically, viewership is down and that guy decided to tweet a list of things he personally doesn't like about the league as if that's the cause i.e. talking out of his ass.

Here's why I don't watch, I literally can't. At least not in a way the league can measure.

I was actually able to catch the last few games on Hulu. I never tried before that, but I opened up the app on my TV and saw the Ducks game on there. That might be a cheaper option. Before that, I was using my parents' cable login on the Bally website.
 
I'm not able to watch when the games are exclusively on paywall ESPN+ subscription app. I hate having to pay for DirectTV for Bally on top of having to pay for some stupid app just to see all Ducks games. No wonder viewership is down. People aren't subbing to ESPN+.

There is a deal for ESPN+ bundled with Disney+ and Hulu that I suspect will get increased subs get when the next season of Mandolorian is on Disney+, Disney been so lazy on releasing the 3rd season that Pedro Pasqal now has another show, The Last Of Us on HBO lol.

I have that. The games are blacked out, even with a vpn.

I have Hulu. The only games I can watch on that service are the national games and a handful of Hulu ESPN exclusive games.
 
I'm out of market for most of the games, but even I understand the frustration of regional blockouts.

Admittedly, I ain't no NHL employee, but it seems like if you're making it harder for locals and other people nearby to watch, you might have some trouble getting local ratings.

While I'm at it, you might also have trouble with national broadcasts if you have incompetent people doing the commentary. If you're on a NATIONAL broadcast, you should be putting your best foot forward, and not letting people who have had no experience calling games at any other level take the reins and then get names wrong and not follow the game.
