Credit to Montreal for squeezing out the unprotected 1st. Florida didn't have a ton of cap space and barely could fit Chiarot with Montreal eating 50%. That might have prevented them from getting somebody better. I forgot that Florida traded away Frank Vatrano to open up some cap space before the deadline.
Boston got Hampus Lindholm at the deadline for a former 1st/C level prospect, a 2022 1st, 2023 2nd, and 2024 2nd. But I don't think Florida could have squeezed in Lindholm unless they got another team to retain a portion. And Lindholm negotiated an extension with Boston as part of the deal as I understand it. Florida wouldn't have been able to do that.
The other LD at the deadline were pretty pedestrian: Jeremy Lauzon (2nd rounder), Nathan Beaulieu (7th rounder), Mark Giordano (two 2nds + 3rd, Florida would have needed double retention), Robert Hagg (6th rounder), Brett Kulak (2nd rounder), Nick Leddy (2nd + Walman + Sundqvist, Florida would have needed double retention), Jacob Middleton (Kaapo Kahkonen), Travis Dermott (3rd rounder).
Maybe they could have been in the market for somebody like Carson Soucy but Seattle didn't have to deal him last year.
But yeah, Zito (and probably their owner) were prisoners of the moment and got a little overzealous. On the bright side, their attendance is up ~1,500 a game so far this season.
