Of all the "JAGs" (to use @NjDevsRR tag) we had just only a couple of seasons ago...

Rooney
Anderson
Hayden

I think i liked Kevin Rooney the most. He seemed like the most legitmate of the players.

I remember Joey Anderson being here, and NJD media making a big deal when he signed that contract with Shero... (As if he was gonna be a star, they had a whole photo op article and all) and i kept thinking to myself, who the hell is this guy. I thought maybe he was connected to someones family or something in the organization.

Funny enough i remember that and none of his actual play here, despite 40 odd games.

Kevin Rooney... Yes i remembed him and was even slightly disappointed we didnt keep him around. I thought he may morph into a Coleman-lite at somepoint.

Hayden I remember people making noise here that he is useless and he basically could hardly even get a game in. Lol.

Im so glad that we dont have to deal with these kind of problems now. We have to talk about why our skilled players cant even get ice time (holtz) due to overwhelming depth. Soooo much better to deal with these kind of problems!! A guy like Mango in the minors. Can you imagine that 4 or 5 seasons ago...!

We drafted Joey Anderson in 2016 in the 3rd Rd (#73) and signed him in April 2018. They do a photo op and article for every draft pick signing.

Topias Vilén was a 5th round pick and got a photo op and an article, we don’t sign that many guys to ELCs.

Anderson was a nice little prospect, he had surprisingly good underlying numbers in his 2nd stint that suggested he should get a shot as bottom six guy.

He signed a three year two-way deal with Toronto that ended with the last year having a 800k salary (so basically one way deal then).

Doing a three year stint in the Toronto minors is a double edged sword. No team remotely invests as much in player development and minor league amenities.

They also sign as many FAs as possible to two way and AHL deals. A system stuffed to the gills, plus a habit of signing old vets like Simmonds as depth too, makes it hard for guys to get an opportunity. The Leafs have a bit of a habit of getting a promising player and dumping them for crap: Alexander Barabanov for AHL UFA, Mason Marchment for Denis Malgin.

The undrafted Kevin Rooney got an AHL PTO from the Bing Devils after the 2015-16 season, which is very common for players coming off of a better team like Providence.

Rooney had won a championship in 2014-15 with Noel Acciari and Brandon Tanev, both also undrafted and currently in the NHL. He was Providence’s Captain in 2015-16.

He got a one year ELC in 2016-17 and a minimum standard one year deal for 2017-18.

Despite having only played a total 5 NHL games, and only 1 in 2017-18, he then got a two year deal which had a minimum salary in the first year and 700k salary in the second.

So they knew he would likely eventually prove his worth in NJ. His AHL numbers weren’t terrible considering he played a defensive role on an unproductive AHL team. He was coming off of having 4 SHG two seasons in a row.

He became a part of our productive PK:

We got Hayden in a trade for John Quenneville.

Say what you will about Hayden, Hayden = 240 NHL GP (plus, a playoff game for Chicago in 2016-17) and JQ = 40 NHL GP (plus, hilariously 2 NHL playoff games for Chicago 2019-20).

Hayden was big guy with some speed who hit people. Not a complicated player.

Appreciate the full detail, thanks for that.

The cobwebs have been utterly obliterated ..

I didnt realiaze that Rooney came in AHL from PTO. When we didnt pick him up after his last season i thought we made a wrong move not upping him. But looks like he capped out at what he was with us....

I’m not gonna say the entire family are terrible humans, but we know his dad certainly is.

I definitely have some terrible humans related to me and I do have some love and feelings for them, so I can empathize more often than not. To a point.

The difference between 82 and 84 games is not huge. I don't think they should go many more over that though. With more wear and tear over the course of the season, and less rest time in the offseason, guys are going to get injured more, and the quality of play will suffer.

I'm guessing it ends up somewhere at $10 million X8

All I gotta say is that I am very happy our captain took a Bergeron style contract and wants to win.

It should be noted that when Nico signed the contract it was an overpayment relative to his performance up to that point. Last season and this one thus far is him justifying the contract.

I'm not one of those people that thinks the season needs to be shorter, because I love watching games. I don't want a 70 game season or whatever some have proposed over on the main board.

But I also don't think we need to add 2 more games either

UNLESS

We can shave some of the preseason games off/shorten camp.

I know preseason games are useful for players to make a case at earning a spot on the team, but do we really need 6-8 games, with 2-3 being split squad/loaded with AHL journeymen type of games?

And can we please never go back to ''Series'' type of regular season games again? It got redundant by the end of that year, to the point where I never wanna see that again if I don't have to.

There was a legitimate reason they were doing that then, which was only about covid protocols. There's no reason to ever try something like that again, unless it absolutely has to happen, like it did that year.

I really don't have any interest in seeing 3-4 (we had at least one 4 in a row of the same opponent, maybe even more) games in a row against the same opponent in the regular season. Sometimes a home and home is fine, where it's two in a row. We've been doing that forever, but that got redundant and was done out of necessity.

Just doing it to do it again would not be out of necessity. And it was only a 56 game season. I can't imagine that in an 82-84 game season. f*** that. Not to mention that a good portion of those games around the league were closed off to fans. I can't imagine paying fans in attendance would like having to see two games in a row against the same opponent.

We actually play two home games in a row against Tampa this year in March, as well as a road game in Tampa within the same week of those two games. So we play them roughly 3 times in a week in March and won't have played them once (in an over an entire calendar year) before that.

I disagree here. I think having a team in for multiple games is great. Like the two home games against Boston coming up. Story lines are better, teams can exploit opponent tendencies more. Feels more meaningful to me.

Personally, I’d prefer to do way more games against the East (and Metro specifically) and then see only one of the Western divisions each year. The Oilers coming in for a game in November is not a draw. But, add 2-3 games against the Rangers, Flyers, Isles, Caps, Pen?

It's fine once in a while to have two homes games in a row, but not over and over and over and over, like that 2021 season.

And 2 in a row is fine, as long as it's not every opponent 2 in a row all 82-84 games long, but more than that is just overkill.

Nico took a deal based potential, it was a gamble that looks fine now but it's not like he signed a deal at the time in hopes of being underpaid for the betterment of team. Regardless that doesn't really matter I suppose and I just wasted everyone's time writing that.
