They were good a few years ago. Never thought they were a contender or anything serious, but a lot of those that are good are getting older now. Laine and Werenski are still 24-25.

And while Merzlikins hasn't been a bad goalie at the NHL level, they overpaid for him. It was a little too soon to give him that much.

At the same time they really weren't good enough to contend when they had still Panarin and Bobrovsky anyway. I'm pretty sure that sweep over Tampa is the only playoff series the franchise has ever won.

They had a good group of Defensemen back then. All of them except Werenski were traded away. Their management kinda threw in the towel when those two left the team.

it will be good if there’s full buy in from players and countries and they don’t try that dumb “young stars” and euro team gimmick because that basically took any stakes out of the competition

Can't get the Russians involved.

Gross.
I got bad news for the NHL (or really the NHLPA), Russian teams are going to be banned from international sports for a long while, and the other federations are going to refuse to play team Russia (or team russias under a different name). A year isn’t going to make a difference.

I think you'd be surprised how quickly the status quo returns if and when the war ends.

Geopolitics has a real short memory.

Exactly.

Not to get too political but I'll just say that as long as Putin is in Power over there (and the war continues), any Russian Sports teams are going to get exocommunicated / blackballed / whatever in international play.

The Sedin's in and still no Elias is a f***ing joke.
He'll get in.

Alfredsson is just getting in this year and has been retired 2 years longer than Elias has.

I'm now more confident than ever that he'll get in. It just might take a little while longer of waiting. Even the Sedin's didn't get in during their first year of eligibility. I think this is their third year. Elias could have gone in one year before them.

How do you justify the choice though? He has a better PPG and cups. It's just a popularity contest?

all international games are exhibition or preseason level games in my world

It might be tough to replicate the nastiness of the 1996 World Cup. Unrestricted free agency was just added with the 1995 CBA, so I think players just had a different mentality back then. And in general the hockey back then had a bit more snarl to it.

Although I do think it's important to have a best on best national tournament for the kids / next generation of potential fans. I wasn't born yet for the Miracle on Ice, so the 1996 US World Cup squad was another factor in hockey becoming my favorite sport in the mid-90s. Maybe it's different now with info readily available online, but back then I didn't who was Canadian and who was American.
