Francis and a lot of the Edmonton media are delighted at the possibility of Matthews bolting. It’s tempered in Edmonton at least that they know McDavid can UFA the year after. The wailing from northern Alberta if Connor was to go home would be truly epic. I guess we will have a good idea whats up next summer.

Once McDavid bolts, Francis will cry, and blame Matthews/Toronto.

Just looking at Detroit and the Yzerbuild a little bit in progress. It seems like their current build is a little bit less impressive than it seemed on paper when they made their veteran additions and their kids looked like they were going to break out this past summer. With their real bluechip guys Seider and Raymond in a bit of a sophomore slump, Edvinsson developing in the minors and Zadina and Veleno a little slower to develop, there's just a bit less there than it seemed. Still a very good program in the making.

I wonder if the players union may have advocated not having games over Christmas
Doubt it. All they need to do is show how much more revenue they could generate on Xmas weekend and the players union will say Yes.

Probably more to do with TV rights with ESPN, TNT… as they would only want people watching their NBA and NFL games instead of spreading it out with NHL.

The last time an NHL game was played on Christmas Day was in 1971.

Shortly after that, they stopped playing games on Dec 24.

Now there is a three day break for every team. Depending on schedule, every team gets either the 23rd, 24th, and 25th off, or the 24th, 25th, and 26th off.

I'm all for the importance of defense, but that article is embarrassing.
Players in their mid-30s accumulating more team trophies than somebody 10 years younger than them doesn't make them better players than McDavid.
Players having a better +/- this season doesn't make them a better player than McDavid.
Bad arguments are bad.

He should have quit when he was ahead.

Ovechkin a complete player?
Lol Fischler was writing garbage when I bought every hockey magazine as literally a child. Im 64 now. I remember his, likely self published rags, as the worst printed on the cheapest paper. Always New York centric, who ever was a rookie on the Rangers was among or at the top of Calder etc etc. His wife also contributed articles.
He built a career out of being a fan tho to give due credit. The old hack has to be 100

This is ridiculous. I understand with the American teams competing against football and basketball christmas games. But the Canadian teams should have something.

They have something - three days off to spend with loved ones over the holidays.

IIRC, every year the greatest team was the New York Rangers. The x-Oiler, Messier finally delivered for him.

I was told the gap in the Atlantic would shrink this season. Just looking at the standings and we are 15 points up on DET, 16 up on BUF and FLA and 17 up on OTT and MTL. I like it.

The way this is shaping up, it is going to be a three horse race for the two wild card spots, with that battle happening in the Metro. This is trending to another large gap from the top 9 to the bottom 7 with NJ replacing FLA and the Islanders playing with a healthy team.

Some games in hand to play out, but who of those bottom 7 do you see getting hot enough to overtake any of the top 9? "I just don't see it happening".

Lucic, who has 2 goals in 33 games, out there for almost the entire final 3 minutes of the game when Calgary was trying to tie it up. I know the flames don't have much depth up front, but not sure what Sutter was thinking there.

Oilers are so trash 5 on 5. Skinner bails them out way too often.
I definitely questioned it and definitely flames fans/posters would be questioning the Lucic play.

And Oiler analysis is bang on. Skinner saved their skin. The little I saw...Flames were just dominating. They also got away with some calls too which would've given the flames some good chances on the powerplay, instead, the oilers got the powerplay

Colorado is really feeling those injuries, but they are still sticking it out as a middle-of-the-pack team.
