Huh I heard Calgary media genius Eric Francis this week on the radio insist that the east was loosey goosey, run and gun while the west was tough defensive hard rock hockey This is a guy who watches the Pacific division nightly.

The Western Canadian hockey media live i an bizzaro version of reality. Always have, always will.

It is funny how the “better conference” discussion has effectively disappeared since the East has been by far the stronger conference for at least half a decade. When the West was running roughshod all anyone ever heard about was how tough and great that conference was.

I guess it’s a media bias thing. Western journalists think Eastern media ignores them so when the West was dominating they made a big deal about it. Now that the inverse is true however no Eastern journalists feel the need make a big deal about it.

Funny part, is sometimes an analyst will try and point out something that's not good, but the Flames pocket media will turn that into a positive. One of their guys, with a really annoying voice (Derek Wills) will make an own goal sound like it was the greatest event of the decade. And talk about how the player stole the puck, always the best puck stealer, maybe the best in the league, right before he pots it in his own net.

They really don't have analysts, they have cheerleaders.

Yep. The Western hockey media has two jobs: defend owners first and foremost (and by extension the GMs they hire) and two attack Eastern hockey teams lol

I really think the NHL is missing out not playing on Christmas day. Prime NBA games today. NFL decided to go half half playing Saturday and Sunday. Meanwhile, NHL took Sat, Sun and Mon off. You want TV revenue? Well you got 300M people sitting on their couches for these two days and you decide not have any games?

too much competition. NHL isn't as strong as the other two leagues. its gonna take some time though.

Would you want a Leafs player to do what Makar did? I'm conflicted.

Man, Buffalo gets hammered by snow like no place else.
No... I think he will have a harder time getting calls in the future. It's humiliating for the ref for a player whose drawing the penalty to say he's wrong. Barzal hooked his arm too... it was a borderline call. Just let the refs do their job.

Also your best audience (in Canada) is more fixed on the World Juniors over the holidays than the NHL

A Boston/Toronto in Boston matchup would be a dream.

Or showcase McDavid in a prime market in the US.

I think it’s primarily a CBA thing. Because I recall games on Christmas way back when. I could be wrong.

The flip side is that a lot of players can spend Christmas Day with family. I'm ok with it.

Eric Francis has also been trying to sell the Matthews to the US angle as a Gaudreau/Tkachuk equivalency. You can actually hear his hurt feelings on the radio whenever he's asked to speak on a program for some reason.

Well, maybe Matthews will now see that turtling to Columbus a la Johnny Hockey, or flamboyantly negotiating your own exit to a warm weather winning team a la Tkachuk could blow up in your face in spectacular fashion.

Francis and a lot of the Edmonton media are delighted at the possibility of Matthews bolting. It’s tempered in Edmonton at least that they know McDavid can UFA the year after. The wailing from northern Alberta if Connor was to go home would be truly epic. I guess we will have a good idea whats up next summer.

They really should have HNIC. It will be record breaking revenue. The higher Ups in the NHL made a huge mistake not doing that.
