As much as I like seeing Bruins and TB decline, I think it is best if the Leafs just keep improving starting with the core.
Maybe AM and MM can take their game to the next level to truly challenge McD as the best player in the league. Or at the very least be just one tier under McD instead being two tiers under McD like the rest of the league. Or Willie continues to explode and find the inner Mack in him. Or Reilly just click and learn how to play defence. Lilly continues to improve and become a true top pairing Dman.

If they resign Bergeron and Krejci they got virtually the same team.10 mill in cap space to replace what exactly? Trent is RFA* and was on 1.5M contract, they can afford him at 2M, the rest is signed.
You are effectively replacing 4th line. They have too many Ds to play them all. Already had one of the best D corps prior to Orlov's signing.

Marchand Bergeron Debrusk
Zacha Krejci Pasta
Hall Coyle *Trent

They will need to replace 3.8M Foligno on the 4th line. I wonder if non-Kyle-Dubas GM can pull this off.

I'll bet they will find a better 4th line C or get Foligno on the 4th line @ 1M.

Are some adjustments/manoeuvring needed? For sure.
But a lot of turnovers/finding bargains and cash strapped? I don't see it.

Except they don't have 10 mill in cap space because that doesn't include bonus overages. IDK how it gets calculated but I am fairly sure Boston was never 4.5 mill under the salary cap at any point this year so that number will be fairly decent in size.

Overages, Krejci, Swayman, Bergeron, and Frederic will probably chew that money up on their own, if not exceed it. And then they need to sign 2 4th liners just to ice a roster with zero extras. Dumping Reilly will probably open up enough to do that but they are sub-1 mill guys, and Zboril is in their everyday lineup.

Unless they have some major cap gymnastics up their sleeves, they are looking at cutting at least one sizeable contract off of their books... whether that be Forbort, Carlo, Grzelcyk, DeBrusk or someone else.

He was notable for not getting the covid vax. Had to sit out of games in Canada. Rustled some Jimmie’s for that
Hmm.

Someone choosing what to do with their own body doesn't seem to me to be rustled jimmies worth. Especially 2 years later and knowing what we know.

I won't comment on this further. Vax discussion is frowned upon around here.

I am desperate for a Leafs-Bruins 2nd round. It would be a series for the ages, as the favourite Bruins fight off the Leafs looking for vengence and their own shot at glory. B's did extremely well to add Orlov and Bertuzzi, those guys will fit right in and give an already disgustingly elite team more punch.

I'd love to watch that series, but if the Leafs lose in round 1 again I'll probably do what I've been doing the last six years and that's get super emo and not watch any hockey until the finals.
I’m with ya, would love Leafs/Bruins round 2. This has been a dream season for Boston and beating them would make up for some of those game 7 losses because you know their fanbase would be absolutely heart broken. They’re an awesome team, however I don’t view them as unbeatable whatsoever

Yeah, about Boston......the Leafs third line will get their lunch fed to them without at least one solid addition. That bottom 6 is full of nasty.

L1#63 Brad Marchand – #37 Patrice Bergeron – #74 Jake DeBrusk
L2#18 Pavel Zacha – #46 David Krejci – #88 David Pastrnak
L3#59 Tyler Bertuzzi – #13 Charlie Coyle – #71 Taylor Hall*
L4 #17 Nick Foligno* – #11 Trent Frederic – #21 Garnet Hathaway

I think it's safe to say JBB was really the mastermind behind Tampa's success and Yzerman just got credit for it, unfortunately for us

Our loss to the Oilers has made a ton of Boston fans very giddy today. Almost as if they were a tiny bit insecure before and then the loss happened and BOOM the flood gates open.

3rd line was the best line last night. Got to find the right combo but the players are there.

The weak link is ZAR, and presumably he is on the 4th line in any iteration.
That's one game.

It's a far cry from Foegele - McLeod - Janmark third line vs a Bertuzzi - Coyle - Hall third line.

IMO the Leafs just don't match up well to the Bruins eventual bottom 6 of:

Bertuzzi - Coyle - Hall
Foligno - Frederic - Hathaway

Zboril played a whooping 15 games(12min per game). Not even Zboril thinks he'll play for Bruins again.

Hampus Lindholm - Charlie McAvoy
Dmitry Orlov - Brandon Carlo
Matt Grzelcyk - Connor Clifton

Forbort is 7th D at best.

They can probably pull Kucherov with Hall and there could be a 4 mil cap increase.

But our 3rd line won’t be up against their 3rd bc Keefe would match them against their 4th and Bruins will play their 1st or 2nd against us.

I think this matches up pretty well:

Knies - ROR - Kerfoot
Lafferty - Kampf - Acciari

The X-Factor for me is Knies and Bertuzzi. Knies being a rookie, Bertuzzi never playing in the NHL playoffs, struggling with injuries, and also just having general inconsistency in his career and not performing particularly well when he hasn't been an offensive focal point.

Kerfoot has 11 points in his last 19 playoff games and is a much better defensive player than Hall, who has 9 points in his last 18 playoff games and has never been a great playoff performer. One would hope that ROR can at least match Coyle, and that Lafferty - Kampf - Acciari can match up with that low-offense 4th line.

We already spent Anderson, Gaudette, Gogolev, Abramov, 2 1sts, 2 2nds, a 3rd, and a 4th on that bottom 6 (in addition to getting McCabe and a few other minor pieces). We didn't get the right guys if that is not good enough, because we certainly spent enough on it for it to be able to match up against anybody.

Forbort is 7th D at best.

I am talking about next year... When Orlov is a UFA who will be making a lot more than 1.25 mill, Clifton is a UFA who will be making more than 1 mill, and there won't be a 4 mill cap increase. There will be a 1 mill cap increase... It has already been confirmed as such.

Grzelcyk - McAvoy
Lindholm - Carlo
Forbort - Zboril

Is the Bruins' defense next year. The rest are UFA's or prospects... And there is not much money for them to upgrade it unless they start dumping people.

just seeing the news now

Hot take: I don't see the Bruins falling off a cliff next year like everyone else. That's a damn near complete team. They're not losing most pieces.

They may very well still be competitive, but it depends on how they manage the 4.5 mil in cap overages + how much their older vets decline and balancing contracts.

The team next season is likely to look different

What news? Pasta was going to sign here?

I’m pretty sure bertuzzi couldn’t cross the border without vaccination If he works in Canada
