We traded for Clarkson to get as close to the cap as possible before the season in the event Marner held put until December like Nylander did.Don't get it but there has to be a reason. I mean we traded for Clarkson before we signed Marner.
Marner's agent threatened that we couldn't afford to hold out and sign Marner later (taking the higher 1st year cap hit) trying to put pressure on Dubas.
So by getting as close to the cap as possible with Clarkson/Horton and an unsigned Marner, we could then place those two on LTIR at the start of the season and start accruing cap space to sign Marner.
Marner signing the day before cap screwed that up and we were unable to add anything at the deadline that year to help the team because we were over the cap.
The only way being over the cap using LTIR is beneficial is if you're under the cap to start the year and accrue space to go over, or you're like Tampa and your star players are injured enough to qualify, but your team is still good enough to make playoffs.
