Don't get it but there has to be a reason. I mean we traded for Clarkson before we signed Marner.
We traded for Clarkson to get as close to the cap as possible before the season in the event Marner held put until December like Nylander did.

Marner's agent threatened that we couldn't afford to hold out and sign Marner later (taking the higher 1st year cap hit) trying to put pressure on Dubas.

So by getting as close to the cap as possible with Clarkson/Horton and an unsigned Marner, we could then place those two on LTIR at the start of the season and start accruing cap space to sign Marner.

Marner signing the day before cap screwed that up and we were unable to add anything at the deadline that year to help the team because we were over the cap.

The only way being over the cap using LTIR is beneficial is if you're under the cap to start the year and accrue space to go over, or you're like Tampa and your star players are injured enough to qualify, but your team is still good enough to make playoffs.

Yup.

LTIR is not free money or a get out of jail free card. Any LTIR contracts have to be accounted for and fit under the cap on season opening day, and only then they can be put on LTIR with that money usable on replacements.

But as you mentioned, you cannot accrue any cap space that way.

You are posting this like it doesn't apply to the Leafs.
Didn't you know? Core players only have discipline, work ethic, leadership, and want their team to win if they're a hothead that screams at teammates in practice for nothing, and creepily controls all of their teammate's lives.

:sarcasm:

Colorado is a Leafs Team that knows how to kill off an opponent + Makar. To me thats the difference.
Leafs-Avs final would have been the most insane final possible entertainment wise.
To be fair they haven't really had much success until this year. I know they at least made it to the 2nd round in previous years, but they were similar in the sense that they were stuck there. We just need one year where we get past and IMO the sky is the limit.

But yeah, I think in a hypothetical Leafs/Avs SCF we have a tough time. We can obviously match their offense, but their top 4 D is far superior. Goaltending is a wash IMO, Campbell might even have a slight edge as Kuemper hasn't been great at all.

But doesnt dada have some value

Like couldn’t they trade him for a 7 and not take LTIR
That is the part that seems strange. They have a few RFA's to sign but no one that would attract a massive offer sheet so that's not it. Did they think they could not move Dadonov without retention? he does have a limited 10 team NTC that includes Anaheim at least. Maybe he is not movable without retention. Perhaps the combination of teams that might be interested, who are not on his NTC list are few and possibly his real salary is an issue. Teams with the capspace tend to be cash strapped (real cash) that contract is an Eugene Melnyck special in that it was back loaded. Cap hit is 5 but real cash is 6.5M Seems like from Vegas perspective even throwing in a mid round pick with him would be better that guaranteeing you are using season opening LTIR for 4 years. Perhaps Vegas thinks/knows they can move Weber to Arizona.

I expect Habs will move Dadonov at the deadline with 50% retention if he continues to be a close to 20G guy.

That +Makar is pretty huge lol. We have a legit offensive d-man ourselves in Rielly, yet when I watch Makar I feel like we also don't have a legit offensive d-man. Makar is in a league of his own.

That's very true. They haven't had much success and they have been benefeciary of real bad seasons. Some how they manage to tank the years of strong drafts like Makar only to go back into playoffs the next year

But when comparing to the Leafs, they lost to pretty good teams in Stars, Nashville, Sharks and Vegas
All these teams were big physical and all of them have and had scoring threats with really good D tandems

All those teams were Stanly Cup finalists last 5 years

Habs and Columbus though. I guess the Habs went to the Finals

I try to throw out the Columbus series because it was such a weird playoffs with the bubble and all, but I know a loss is a loss. Montreal was by far the worst team we lost to, but playing Bruins x2, Capitals and Lightning were all tough.

Leafs should be hovering the Flyers like vultures. Potentially some good players may become available who Torts won't have any interest in keeping (or don't want to play for him).

Also, he seems a poor fit for a team doing a retool....
Couts please. I wanted Leafs to swoop in on him before he broke out. Probably no chance now.

Almost everyone the Leafs lost to made the finals or won the Cup shortly thereafter.

Montreal....no excuse.

CBJ....the league shut down for longer than a regular offseason then teams were thrown straight into a 5 game series.....that was like preseason as playoffs. I don't put a ton of stock into that one.

But at some point, they have to take that step.

Is it true that that Haslam guy who was the former governor or whatever was trying to make Bills against the gay community? I thought I read that and idk if it's true or not but that wouldn't be a good look for the league after the year it's gone through and especially during Pride month of all months if it's true.

We like our team. That's why we are here

What we don't like is our losing culture and acceptance or resigned mentality

Last year Mack came out in public and self criticized himself saying i haven't won $hiit

Mack also has more points in playoffs points than regular season in avg.

But clearly we don't like our team. That's why season in season out we come out just so I am post here about how much I hate the management
That’s pretty much what the self proclaimed “realists” around here do, bellyache and provide no real conversation and input into how to make this team tangibly better to get over the hump of playoff success.

Leafs assistant coach Carbery to interview for the B's head coaching job.

I thought all our staff sucks and are incompetent hires by our incompetence crew of management

Who offered the $7mill deal? Flyers?

As for Tortorella, sources said he was at Voorhees today to meet everyone and iron out his new contract which I’m told will be for four years and somewhere between $15-17 million.

..............

Torts the first choice?

By all accounts he was not. According to multiple sources from both within and outside the organization, Tortorella was second on the Flyers wish list behind only recently fired New York Islanders coach Barry Trotz.

According to two Flyers sources, Trotz, who started narrowing down his potential landing spots Monday, turned down an offer from the Flyers early on Tuesday, which led to the Flyers pivoting to Tortorella.

Trotz and the Flyers were very engaged, and the sides met multiple times virtually and at least once in person. It appears Trotz was more impressed with the Flyers than many had thought he would be, and using Dave Scott’s “blank check” mantra for the whole offseason, the Flyers contract offer would have allegedly made Trotz the highest paid coach in NHL history (I don’t have exact figures, but one source indicated that the offer was for more than $7 million each year).

The Flyers didn’t hesitate and immediately reached out to Torts once Trotz declined. But, is it possible that Torts was not a favorite of GM Chuck Fletcher?
