Jack Edwards can provides marvellous entertainment, when your team isn’t playing the Bruins at least.
Marchand gets lightly brushed by an arm in a corner battle and crumples in a dramatic fashion.
Jack yells “Marchands hit by an elbow and he’s down and Marchand is NOT a diver.”
Replay immediately shows Brad taking a huge dive, after barely being touched Brickley says well Marchand broke his nose recently and any contact can be painful.
Jack remains silent.
He’s so bad he’s great.
Not quite as good as his call and Pastrnak's death scene when Komarov almost touched him last year, but impressive nonetheless.

I still find it funny Edmonton has 1/4 of their cap next year tied up in Nurse, Keith, Ceci, and Barrie ..

Luckily Bouchard is looking promising for them.

Actually Edmonton's cap situation looks bleak .. next year they have only $5 mill of space with only 7 forwards signed and they need to sign another goalie.

And they have over $4 mill in dead cap space.

Woof.

The problem with the Oilers is that their high cap hit guys don't really play any sort of defence... and as another poster mentioned somewhere, when the commit to playing D they cannot genereate any offence.

We do overpay a guy or two... but every one of our top forwards are responsible defensively more often than not. Plus, as much as we moan and complain about our D, the Oilers D is like Sens level... i.e. complete trash when it comes to actual defensive proweress.

I feel the top 8 in the east are set, and when I look at the west, I see at least three teams ahead of the Oilers I consider to be better (all-around) and a couple behind them who might not be far off. It is going to be a strugle with them... interested to see what they have forced their GM into... as they sit OUT of the playoffs right now though have games in hand on most of the other teams.

Hyman will bounce back, as will the Oilers offence. It goes where McDavid and Drai go, and those two will have another of their superhuman scoring streaks in due time. I also expect they'll make the playoffs, as the Pacific division is pretty much Vegas and no one else (although LA's rebuild looks like it is starting to pay dividends). But, yeah, the Oilers are going nowhere fast, at least for as long as Holland is the GM. Which was so predictable too, as he was one of the worst GMs in the league during his last few years in Detroit.

Unlike some of you, I don't really feel any hatred for the Oilers in general, but I will say their beat writers are the worst in the league by far. At least guys like Simmons, who we can all agree is beyond pathetic, is usually critical of the Leafs. Edmonton writers are the reverse Simmons: equally stupid and abrasive opinions, but with a dose of over-the-top homerism. And there is a portion of the Oilers fan base that eats it up. That group is getting exactly what they deserve right now. The more sensible fans who knew all along that Holland was steering the ship into a sand bar? Gotta feel for them.

What will rielly smith’s next contract look like? Any chance he comes home and fots in our team? Maybe takes a bit less?

there is no way we can fit him in next year. he makes $5 million already, i don't suspect he's taking a pay cut. and even if he does it's not gonna be enough of one for toronto to be able to sign him.

Holland had $30+ mil to spend and spent it all on the worst Top-4 D in hockey plus a few complementary middle-six forwards.

Just gross incompetence.

I dont think the Edmonton D are all that bad really. Middle of the pack meh.

It sure looks like the same sad song for the Oilers in that they have garbage goaltending and forward depth thats not going to be carried by the top of the lineup. Once that insane PP cooled off, they got exposed.

Just looking a them 5v5 this year:

xGF/60 + GF/60 = 14th in the league (dragged down by depth)
xGA /60 = 13th in the league (decent)
team save% = 29th in the league (jeezus)

The Oilers are going nowhere unless they can find a goalie of course. It's their #1 problem and I would look at moving assests to get a keeper asap.

Eh they're at 89.77sv% in all situations, closer to 16th than 32nd. Bad, but not awful.

Better goaltending than the Avs have had and barely worse than the Knights.

Did not realize Edmonton was out of the playoffs. Like really far out. Wow

Also, that fanbase seems to be turning on Hyman already. Hes going to be the whipping boy in really short order

No matter how well Hyman played here, no Leafs fan EVER looked to Hyman to initiate offense. Every goal was a nice bonus.

Oilers fans are already complaining that Hyman isn't creating anything offensively. That's scary.

i don't think its completely his fault. none of the good free agents want to go to edmonton. they signed who ever was willing to sign there.

It's absolutely his fault. His and his staff.

He signed the contracts. Would Bunting have turned down 100k more to go to Edmonton? Probably not. Overpaying Bunting by 100k is far better then overpaying someone by a million+ and multiple years.

Using other signings from the same summer, how would you have spent the money?

I tired it:
Ceci 3.25, Barrie 4.5 = 7.75
Savard, 3.5 , <-- still good defensively, not amazing
Sutter, 3.65 <-- For his age, somehow still kicking but in a reduced role.
Deangelo, 1 <- Providing good amount of offense, no defense, his issues are mostly off the ice
Hamilton, 9 <-- Even after signing, a Noris quality defenceman year after year
McCabe, 4 <-- Slightly
Eddler, 3.5 <- good season with LA, good underlying numbers as a mid pair guy.
Hakanpaa, 1.5<0 bruising #5/6 who can play 2nd pair in a pinch. Solid defensively.
Mete, 1.2 <- Hasnt looked as good as his rookie season for a while, but still is young enough. Plays a decent 3rd pair.

Using about the same amount of money (assuming you dont care about charachter)
Deangelo + Sutter/Savard + Hakanppa/Mete.
Save about a million bucks, and get an extra defender.
Other easy answer, you sign Sutter and Savard and become much harder to play against while loosing some offensive upside.

Hyman was a fine signing by Edmonton. Overpaid by about a million or so and long in tenure by a year or two, but that always happens in free agency. Especially for a team like Edmonton which always has difficulty attracting free agents.

Issue is the expectations placed on Hyman are unreasonable. He is a heart and soul guy who can play on the 1st line who does the dirty work, all the way down to a 3rd line grinder. Who should be pencilled in to score about 20 to 25 goals and 45 to 50 points, max. But Oilers fans expected him to be the sniping winger next to McDavid and get 40 goals and 70 points. It's not going to happen.

He'll be the whipping boy for the tenure of his contract, and really no fault of his own.

Sportsnet radio (Friedman and Marek) really leaning into change coming from the Oilers soon. Wow, they're discussing it much more freely then I though they would

Also two teams that have goaltending as their biggest issue right? A decent attempt at trying to cover for the Oilers but they are still in the bottom ten for goalkeeping and 3rd last 5v5 which is a no go in the playoffs. A team on the cusp of the top ten for all situations xGF% and two of the top points producers in the league shouldnt be circling the drain unless goaltending is sinking them.

I just think that a solid goalkeeper will make a world of difference for that club.

Just look at the Rangers. A pretty bad team with a great goaltender makes heads turn. Now just imagine a better team (like the Oilers) in front of a great goalie.

I agree that Holland is a failure and it's mainly due to blowing all that cash expecting Grampa Smith and useless Kosk to get the job done.

Still 58.6% chance to make it per moneypuck. Weak division and piling up points early helps but they gotta turn it around now.
