Also two teams that have goaltending as their biggest issue right? A decent attempt at trying to cover for the Oilers but they are still in the bottom ten for goalkeeping and 3rd last 5v5 which is a no go in the playoffs. A team on the cusp of the top ten for all situations xGF% and two of the top points producers in the league shouldnt be circling the drain unless goaltending is sinking them.

I just think that a solid goalkeeper will make a world of difference for that club.

Just look at the Rangers. A pretty bad team with a great goaltender makes heads turn. Now just imagine a better team (like the Oilers) in front of a great goalie.

I agree that Holland is a failure and it's mainly due to blowing all that cash expecting Grampa Smith and useless Kosk to get the job done.
There's a reason why they call him Leako Losskinen

Using other signings from the same summer, how would you have spent the money?

almost any other way, tbh.

The first mistake was re-upping their own flawed RFAs.

If Nurse was asking for that much money off that McDrai-dependant season, the bold move would have been to trade him to another GM who overvalued the size/offense combo (and there are plenty), and they could have got a legit good piece or two and had capsapce left over.

RNH is such a nonentity he should have been dropped period.

Then what do you do when you have that much money to spend ? you blow away the offers for the top UFA. you offer Dougie $11m/yr, like the rangers did with Panarin.

And if there's no other free agents worth the money then you pass, and sign the Buntings and Kases instead.

Literally anything other than what Holland did - it took them years to get out of Chiarelli's mess and then in an instant Holland blows all of it and doesn't add even ONE impact player to the roster, and locks in a whole bunch of middling to poor crap again.

sure, elite goaltending can cover for anything. but if you're depending on elite goaltending to bail you out you're not building a good team anyways.

The Oilers goaltending has been bad, but far from awful. It's a poor excuse for horrendous team building.

The truth is, a fluke season from 39 year old Smith fooled a whole lot of people as to what the Oilers actually were last year, including the Oilers' GM.

Jeez, Ceci has been pretty good again this year:

Ozone starts: 34.81 (One of the most buried dmen in the league)
CF%: 52.73
xGF%: 49.01

It's Barrie and other guys who are gifted prime minutes that are absolute trainwrecks.

Leafs are very good this year, I actually feel they look the best they’ve looked with this core to date and yet I feel it’s absolute shit luck that they will likely face Tampa in rd 1! (I’m predicting Florida wins the division and Leafs/Tampa fight it out for 2nd/3rd). Not to say there are any easy series but facing the back to back champs in rd 1 when Leafs are one of the best teams this year is frustrating.

It’s unbelievable that that was the answer Holland came up with again! Not only betting on Smith repeating his season and being healthy at his age, he double downed and signed him for two years! I get that the goalie FA market wasn’t as strong last off-season as it was the previous one, but they couldn’t have found a way to bring in a guy like Andersen or Ullmark?

The best way to get rid of the demons and silence the haters. On the other hand, haters gonna hate and will try to compare us to Columbus winning the series or MTL cinderella run)

Yeah. We absolutely squandered an amazing opportunity last year

Listen I can't really pardon them for those 2 series, they should have won both. That said, its over, time to move on. This year if they play a really solid series and the leafs top guys perform, they can honestly beat anyone. What I will not be happy about is if our top guys go silent when it matters. Last year Nylander stepped up, Matty was ok (The wrist injury might have had an impact in him not being 'Matty' good), Marner was not good and needs to be regular season good.

Honestly, I would hate to play for the Oilers with the setup that’s been in place there for years

Not only do McDavid, Draisaitl and Nurse never face consequences for piss poor defense, they get rewarded with more ice time while others get benched and take criticism

Ethan Bear is a perfect example of a promising young D who was scapegoated and run out of town

Double standards in coaching is the quickest way to lose a locker room, and create a permanent divide

Obviously, there are other issues, but every coach they’ve had during the McDavid years has failed to make the stars accountable, and the players that get criticized and punished notice that

Squandered....

Top player on team, top scorer had an injured wrist, that left him incapable of shooting very well, that required off season surgery to repair.

Second best C on the team, out with a concussion.

Top two C's and a third of our goal scoring out, or useless.

That's where our amazing depth will shine through and get us through the series. Or maybe on the back of our 3rd 11mil player?

I see Price is back on the IR to rehab his injured knee "out indefinitely". Think the braintrust got together and said "Look Carey, if you come back you might steal a few games for us and we can't have that. Maybe take some extra time on that knee of yours"??? They may even be pumping covid spores into the dressing room vents at this point.

Oh it is a full on tank season for them at this point. They will f*** up the development of whoever they take regardless.

Greenway runs over kuemper and gets his face pounded the way Foligno should have when he ran over Campbell. Minnesota seems to be a dirty bunch.
I didn't catch who the Avs defenseman who dished out the beating was but the Leafs could use one of those.
