Zach Hyman right now:

true, but what can you really expect of Koskinen? Chiarelli gave him an insane contract, and then Holland doubled down by betting on him and Smith to be their tandem this year. Then Tippett threw him under the bus and mangled what little value was left in him as a goalie. He sucks, but Edmonton made their bed with him. The issues run a lot deeper than goaltending too
Thats pretty clear. Not even the main issue. Problems are management again, roster construction which I guess is management, and maybe coaching but I am hesitant to blame Tippett. Isn't that what we heard on McLellan, Eakins, and now Tippett? The first 2 I named are doing decently with their clubs. We are starting to see why Hitch basically said after his short stint "I am not dealing with this nonsense, I'm out".

Oh, for sure this is all on Holland. He had all that cap space but didn't really address any of the team's needs. The D sucks, they have no forward depth, and the goaltending is a tire fire. The good news for him is that Koskinen's 4.5M is coming off the books this summer. The bad news? Most of that cap hit is going straight to Nurse's ugly extension (9.25M)

Florida is the revenge squad. Bennett, Duclair, Verhaeghe, Reinhart, Montour, Bob all playing well. Marchment doing well too in a small sample. Scary team..
I wonder if Spezza wishes he had signed with them last summer?

The more I watch of Florida (especially on the road) the more pretender vibes I get from this team. Sam Bennett's had a good season but you're probably not winning a cup with him as your 2nd line C. They also need a top 4 D as bad as we do. And there's something about Bobrovsky I don't trust.

With all that said Leafs/Panthers 7 game series would be a coin flip.

Bennett as our #2, is an absolute beast. While he is more of the scorer, he drives the line nearly as much as Huberdeau. The line is dominate offensively, solid defensively, and Bennett add a toughness that the line requires, sometimes a bit too much. He’s exactly the type of 2nd line center a cup winning team could have.

And while we do have road woes, the record doesn’t speak for the play, for the most part. We’ve dominated teams on the road, only to lose, and then you have games like last night. Edmonton attacked, we weathered the storm, and got our game going afterwards. We’ve also played a lot more at home, so I expect the road record to improve.

Forsling was out last night, so we were short on D, and Kiersted actually flew in from Charlotte to Toronto to Edmonton yesterday to make it for the game. We do need one 3rd pairing Dman though, which I’m sure Zito will get by the deadline.

Also, the NHL fan in me thinks a game 7 against our two teams would be epic, but the Panthers homer in me doesn’t think it gets to that many games.

We'd love that series - after back to back playoffs against defensive monstrosities playing a high-octane offensive team would be a blast and I think right in our team's wheelhouse.

I kinda don’t want it to happen in the first round, because the pressure of not getting out of the first again, could play such a mental toll on your team. OTOH, you guys getting out of the first, and getting that monkey off their backs, could wake a sleeping giant.

You guys really need to address your physicality. From an outsiders perspective, if you have an aggressive, physical attack, some of your players don’t respond to it positively. That’s a reason why I think the Panthers would have an advantage. Not only can they attack in waves with talent, they have three lines that can come in and pound your defense also, if they decide to dump and chase. Regardless, I think it would be such a fun matchup.

Tippet has to get canned, right?

well, yes.

but if they let Holland try to fix this mess he'll only make it worse, so they need to fire him too before he does anything else stupid.

and then they have to fire Nicholson too, because he absolutely cannot be involved in picking the next GM, given his horrendous track record there.

the one thing that absolutely should not do is trade either of McDavid or Drai.

But if they had a smart GM right now they could quite literally ditch the entire rest of the roster for nothing, fill the rest of the roster with near league minimum players, and have a realistic chance of icing a better squad than they have right now.

Do we have the GM for you, Edmonton. Filling out the roster with near league minimum players is right up his alley. What do you think the Oilers would be willing to give up for Kid Kyle ??

McDavid’s NMC doesn’t kick in until July 1st. With his cap hit and the cost in assets, it already limits his market but a NMC would make it that harder to move him and get the best return.

IMO if he’s dealt, it should be on draft weekend, likely before the first round.

Something to watch.

the scary thing is that so much of the hockey world and fans like yourself don't realize how hilariously better Dubas is at GMing than a guy like Holland.

It would be hilarious if they don’t trade him before the NMC kicks in and he forces his way to Toronto.

I’m all for Marner++ for McDavid.
