With Vancouver’s win the Oilers are now 7th in their division

Granted, they have a lot of games in hand. Something tells me they won’t take advantage of those though…..

Oilers are 6th in the division by percentage... So, not too much difference. Particularly with how poorly they've played.

Yep - Oilers are 11th in the conference now, with a tough stretch of games coming up.

I don't know about you guys but I would much rather face Florida in first round. So i'm actively cheering on lightning to win the division.. if not us lol

A) Success doesn’t absolve criticism…
B) I am assuming the comment was tongue in cheek as a rebuttal against all the trolls that gave Dubas a hard time when they were caught dressing an EBUG for cap reasons.

A. Maybe but they got away with murder by going millions over the cap in the playoffs.

B. no doubt. Both/many teams are in cap hell. The difference between the Leafs and Lightning is that the Leafs have 1/2 the cap invested in 4 guys who have not been able to win a round while the Lightning have too many good players to fit under the cap (even though they underpay their elite stars for whatever reasons) and have won back 2 back cups. Personally I don't think you can use the way TB do business to justify the way the Leafs do business. Which reminds me of the guy who thought TB was more pissed off at what they gave up for Savard than the Leafs were for Foligno. Yikes.

How can one shit on the team that has won back 2 back SCs and kutcheroved the league last season ?

If you shit on one team for not being able to ice a full roster due to cap restrictions, you have to shit on all of them for the same reason.

Of course in this case it's not even the same.

The Bolts actually were forced to play 2 men short.

The Leafs were never in that position - they could have iced a full roster if they wanted, but instead they exploited a loophole, and used an ebug as backup for one game to get themselves a free roster spot for the next few weeks. The Leafs' choice was actually an example of their cap expertise, not something to criticize them about.

So if anyone is being honest about what being short players due to cap restriction says about a team's cap management, they would be criticizing Tampa (and col, and others), and not be criticizing the Leafs at all, because it never happened to the Leafs.

That's only if you care about being honest ad objective about your Leafs critiques, though.

Yup, a lot of people don’t realize they could’ve have sent Lilly down and ice a full roster, but then they’d be stuck with Lilly in the minors and no emergency recall.

It was actually a very shrewd move, but Dubas and Co will never get credit for the little things.

Playing short two players due to cap hell is not a good look and that deserves more flack than the Leafs for dressing an ebug but as a Leaf fan I could care less what Tampa or any other teams do to deal with their cap hell.

As far as the cap goes, I was more pissed off at the league for allowing Tampa to kutcherov the league.

Hard to get a read on the Panthers. Fun team to watch with all out offense. Great home record but atrocious on the road when Brunette doesn’t have first line change.

They’re in need of a top 4 d man as much as we are.

Do they have the cap space to easily add one?

Do they have the cap space to easily add one?
Short answer is yes.

They are currently just under the cap and accruing cap space, even with a 23 man roster and another 4.37 million on LTIR. So today they could add a player making 5 mill and still run a 23 man roster but they'd have to clear that space as players come of LTIR. I think it's fair to assume they are doing paper transactions to maximize cap accrual with the two waiver exempt players on their 23 man as well, which basically means they will have enough cap space to add anyone they want at the deadline.

So to summarize the longer answer, yes for right now, no once players come of LTIR (Nutivaara may be done for the year though), and yes again at the deadline.
