Another game, another pointless effort by Seguin and Benn.

Seguin - 11 points in 27 games ($9.85M AAV)
Benn - 13 points in 27 games ($9.5M AAV)

Almost 24% of the cap.

Yeah I'm a big fan of Benn so it sucks to see him struggling so much. Seems like his prime years were very short lived, went from up and comer with 2-3 years of dominance to now being a boat anchor. His prime years were great however. Big guy who would hit, fight and stand up for teammates, absolute laser beam of a shot with great all around offensive instincts. Now when you watch up him he'll park in front of the net and get a few garbage points, then lazily glide around the ice regarding every other aspect of the game.

I think the Foligno is the worst move Dubas has ever made. Perhaps his only bad trade

I think it's fair to say we lost the Kadri trade pretty easily. At the time I thought it was great but it just didn't work out as thought. Kerfoot has been a solid middle 6 player for us however and Kadri needed to go after his brain dead playoff suspensions. Just wish we got something better out of it.

Seems like age/injury have impacted them?

Seguin's only on year 3 of his 8 year deal, and Benn has 3 years left after this year too.

If Seguin gets healthy I could see him rebounding in the future with some decent production. But I doubt he'll be a near PPG type player again.

I wish we had gotten someone other than Barrie. A Weegar or Pesce would have been a lot better. Those guys hadn't broken out offensively yet, so their trade value should have been comparable to Kadri's

Maybe I'm not remembering correctly but I'd imagine trading for Weegar at the time would of looked bad for us at first glance, could be wrong but he really put himself on the map last year and has excelled from then on, wasn't really realistic at the time. Pesce would of been a good target.

Most of the analytic guys from HFLeafs were hoping we'd target Weegar when he was a buy low candidate. Seems they were on to something considering he's one of the best defenseman on a great team now.

Honestly I don't think Dubas has really done that great on the trade front really. The Campbell trade being his goldstar and I don't think even he thought he was getting anything more than a back up goalie, worked out amazingly for us though. Muzzin trade and even the Kapanen one (good haul considering our cap issues) were good too.

Dubas main strength seems to be his bargain bin signings honestly. Bunting, Kase and Spezza being obvious ones. Not a bargain bin signing but Brodie has worked out wonderfully. And Tavares although a little overpayed I'm sure most Leaf fans are happy to have him on the roster. He's had his duds like Thornton, Vessey and whatever but overall I'm happy with his ability to plug in cheap depth around the big boys.

Like what? That was more than Kadri's value. Maybe Barrie wasn't the right guy to get, but once the Brodie trade fell through, he was the only other viable option. People also forget that Barrie was actually excellent under Keefe and we got him for a full year at 50%. If Barrie played that way the entire year, he is a 50, almost 60, point defenseman making 2.75 mill for a full year. If you wanted that even at the TDL, you would have had to pay a 1st+, and I don't think Kadri had much more value than a 1st+ when we moved him... and we were also able to get Kerfoot + a 6th in exchange for Rosen + 3rd on top of it.

The only trade that Dubas should have never made was the Foligno trade. It was stupid then and it is stupid now, but a lot of Leafs fans loved it. I guess Dubas sensed a rare opportunity in a unique situation, but I doubt he turns to the rental market in that fashion ever again. More often than not, they don't improve your chances at winning a Cup enough to justify their price, and Dubas probably knows that.

Like I said man, I thought it was fine at the time but who wins the trade obviously isn't determined by that. I don't think it's really debatable that Colorado got more value out of Kadri than we did with Barrie and Kerfoot thus far.

In hindsight it was pretty stupid for the main piece in the trade to be a expiring contract of a defender that needs prime offensive minutes to be effective, especially when we had Rielly on our roster who could be just as effective and more. Now that Rielly signed his new deal, I do wonder how much that season had an effect on his value getting prime PP mins taken away and having underwhelming statistics though. Could be the difference between what he signed for and maybe up to 9 million potentially honestly.

I think you underestimate Kadri's value at the time. I know he was the 3c for us but most teams should have been viewing him as a top 6c with a good caphit and decent term, that's more then just a 1st+. Should of been a comparable defender with term. Maybe his playoff f*** ups made GMs see him differently value wise but I can't see it skewing it that much.

Anyways, I think Dubas is overall a good gm, could certainly do a lot worse. But one of his bigger trades it just didn't work out and he lost. No shame in that.

His original deal was for Brodie and Jankowski, so Barrie expiring to fit Brodie ended up being the best combination of both trades.

Not to say it was a good deal, in hindsight it was not obviously, but ending up with Brodie and Kerfoot isn’t a terrible haul.

VGK is the biggest positive surprise in the NHL this year. Another comeback win today.

I hear the music of Canadian Division playing again

yep that’s my guess as well. NHL will cancel olympics Come back and finish the season in bubbles.

My hope is that after a month and we don’t see the crazy icu numbers we will just be back to normal. But I can see the North again.
