Maybe their next GM will be Uncle Daddy Brodeur. Or perhaps DL will get his shot again.

They showed a shot of Brodeur sitting next to interim GM Tom Fitzgerald after the game. Looks like he switched from the business side to the hockey ops side.

Strange timing heading into the deadline, I wonder if there was some power struggle happening behind the scenes.

Second hit on Kassian was fine. Did not like the first hit at all.

But Kassian snapped so here we are. Poke somebody like that often enough you got to expect something to happen to you.

Tampa loses to NJ, ending their winning streak. Oh boy, tuesday is gonna be ugly.

What's the mercy rule?

The most annoying trait Tkachuk has is a complete lack of pride. It's advantageous. He has no problem looking dickless out there and it gets the job done.

 killed me.

It's true though, even in a positive way--zero ego on that dude, he'll take a beating and walk right over the line no f***s given, and he rarely does it in a way that hurts the team. I have no problem giving him props for results. But for process...

Just always has me conflicted because he's a hell of a player, could do without the circus. Marchand-lite.

He will choke on that mouth guy one day, and someone will have to give him the heimlich move and save his life.

Now's probably a good time to point out that Arizona has the 2nd highest hit in the league next to TO with very little flexibility for next year--the only hits they move by default (and some they'll certainly re-sign):

UFA: Taylor Hall, Soderberg, Richardson. RFA: Hinostroza, Christian Fischer (will be re-signed I'm sure--cap goes up), Lybushkin, Hill. They'll also lose nearly 2 million from Mike Ribeiro's buyout.

Somehow they'll probably need to shed some contracts too so they can actually bring up draftees but yeah. Not a financially healthy place to be when you're getting ready to compete, though they'll certainly remodel heavily in 2022.

The league should be embarrassed that they let what happened in Phoenix happen. The next CBA needs to fix that, although these idiot lawyers will just find a new loophole to exploit.

It's always going to be survival mode for them. Their actual salary is over $10M less than their cap number - that's crazy. The Kings are 6.5M less, but that's from terminations because guys played shitty, not creative accounting to save a buck. The worst thing about it is Arizona has lot of really good young talent. Those moves are biting them in the ass right now.

But... The struggles for that team to stay afloat are well documented. They spend so much energy trying to save real dollars, and that is going to keep them from ever being successful unless they have an incredible run of luck and everything falls into place. It benefits the Kings, I guess, because it is impossible to build a contender with a strategy like that.

And it won't be a teammate. The weirdest thing about all this was not one Flame came to the aid of their best player while he was getting beat down. Lindholm gave a slight effort but the incredibly powerful left hand grab of James Neal somehow pulled him away.

Nope, Tkachuk was gliding into each hit. And Kassian had the puck in his possession both times, with his head down.

Above: he's already stopped making strides and is into a full glide about 10 feet away from Kassian. Not a charge.

Above: same. Doesn't take any more strides. In fact, Tkachuk even turns his body and hits Kassian squarely.

Just to be clear, the NHL's charging rule doesn't take strides, glides, or turning the body into account. It's just force and distance.

Because they knew he had it coming. That's the type of game he molded his career around.

Hope Doughty sent Kassian a gift basket.

I like how Calgary fans make him out to be some master tactician, with a PHD in psychology, for "getting under a player's skin" and "baiting him into taking a penalty" when in actuality he just does dirty shit like elbowing someone in the head (Doughty) or take runs at someone tied up with another player (Kassian). What a cerebral player....

Crazy, feels like yesterday when they were just trying to hit the cap floor.

Hadn't read the rule in writing before, always thought it involved some striding language but I guess not.

"A minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player who skates or jumps into, or charges an opponent in any manner. Charging shall mean the actions of a player who, as a result of distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner. A “charge” may be the result of a check into the boards, into the goal frame or in open ice."

I guess it's the "skates or jumps into" language? "Jumps" is clear but "skates" seems pretty vague.

Mentioned the turning of the body to stress that he wasn't "charging" into the hit.

And after reading the rule, seems like there's a lot of room for interpretation. "Distance traveled"..."violently check...in any manner." How much distance, how violent exactly?
