The Hall for Larson deal straight up looks absolutely pathetic to what NJ got for him 4 years later when he was just traded to ARZ..

Arizona's roster is all over the place. They have 6 guys in their 30's, 7 guys between 26-29, and 8 guys under 26. They don't have that cohesive group of players filled with support guys.

No surprise they made this move, once Keller's contract kicks in they'll have 7 roster spots to fill with limited cap space, maybe around $3-4M total. 3 of those are RFAs. They have NMC's and M-NTC's. They still have Hossa on the books for another year, so this is their all in. Hall can't realistically be retained.

They were doing a good job building, not sure why they didn't stick with that. Could be a revenue move, more home playoff dates are huge to them.

Yeah, it's patchwork, and it won't pay off.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of it in a way, because I ripped this team too--but is this not similar to what CBJ did at the deadline last year that people were praising them for?

Yeah but Arizona had more success in 2012 than Columbus has had in three lifetimes. I said it in the main board thread but the yotes remind me of the 2000s Kings. Trade for their stars, directionless, probably win a round, maybe even the division but ultimately going nowhere.

Don't get me wrong I hope they crash and burn spectacularly, but I'm just a little shocked how much resistance I got for criticizing CBJ trading for Duchene and Dzingel who were obviously going to walk while AZ trades for a better player while leading a trashy division and gets soundly mocked.

If it makes you feel better I thought Columbus was stupid too. :)

I am a fan of all major trades. I liked what Columbus did and was hoping it would work out better for them so other GM's may follow suit. I would have hated if LA did something similar though so I am kind of talking out both sides of my mouth haha.

I think the Hall deal is fair from both the Devils and Coyotes stand point.

I think the circumstances are remarkably different.

Panarin and Bobrovsky were pending UFAs with apparently no intention to return.

Columbus could have either:
- sold players to start ANOTHER rebuild, but having no playoff success, fans and ownership would have understandably lost patience and confidence.
- go all in like they did. Either they win a cup or they do well enough to convince the UFAs to re-sign.

Arizona has a lot less pressure as far as pending free agents are concerned. Plus, as Bandit said, Arizona at least did well in 2012 where fans and owners could be a lot more patient.

Remember. Columbus had yet to win a playoff series since their inception.

so most likely picks are 2021 3rd and 2020 1st. I think this makes sense for both clubs.

Agreed. I don't see Hall signing there, he is very competitive and wants to be in a long playoff run, which his 5 playoff games are a part of. I think Colorado is still the lead dog to sign him ,but Boston was very interested as well. Time will tell.

NJ eats half the salary, so for AZ it makes them a much better team, and gives them a leader who knows how to win, competes hard, and is the type of player that will benefit the younger players in a playoff run.

And for NJ, one of those picks might turn out to be a stud, you never know. It was the best deal they could get, given that Hall said he wasn't signing during the season, which was the driving factor in what teams offered.

And for AZ, there is those 5 #1's that teams have gotten with Hall on their roster..

Imagine if Arizona falls out of the playoffs (unlikely) and trades him again for a better package haha.

Will be interesting where he signs. Boston makes a lot of sense if they can move Backes out. Hall is still friends with McDavid but do not see how that works with the cap, nor do I see the oilers in the "contender" category.

A player who is on the block and should bring a decent return, given he's a center and having a good year, is Pageau. The Sens should do quite well and I think he'll by Feb if not sooner.
He's only 26, so he's in the middle of his prime years

plus he is known as a playoff performer.

I will light my foot on fire if ARZ misses by a few points, and then wins the lottery.

I say Coyotes are going to the Final, just to see the main board meltdown.
Would certainly be a shot in the arm for hockey in the greater Phoenix area. Unlike Southern California, people in and around Phoenix won't sit in traffic, or drive 90 minutes to get to a game. The west side Glendale, etc. are building out to be sure though, so maybe they can get enough fans from that side of town. People in Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert, etc. are never going to make that drive on a week night.

What's interesting about Arizona is that the retention stuff is kind of biting them in the ass, I don't think they were expecting to have such a positive showing this season. 21-22 is when most of their older guys fall off the roster (Stepan, Grabner, Goligoski, Hjalmarsson, Raanta, Demers, Hossa rentention). The year after that just about everybody is gone except for their young core guys they signed to long deals. Even if they wanted to retain Hall they can't because of Hossa, the time to make a move like this would have been 2 seasons from now when it wouldn't be a pure rental and could open a window for several years.

Seems to me that they should be unloading guys still and getting more higher picks to fill out the roster 3 years or so from now. They are simply in a suck division, they don't have the goaltending nor the defense to make a serious run at the cup. That pick this year along with any they picked up could give them young, solid talent to supplement their young core so they end up with 7+ guys who can grow together. Instead, they'll likely have 5 or so really good players and then fill in the holes with vets/journeymen/UFAs as best they can. They are perpetuating the crap they have now. But as I said, they might really need the income.
