if by wrong you mean not siding with the racist, then you're right. ;)
You know, 20 years ago this might have put me on the defensive, but it's lost so much meaning that it's no different than being called stupid or "Nazi" these days. Rolls right off the back. Do you think Nazim Kadri is a racist? He defended Don today.

I didnt see anywhere Cherry said he was "superior". He was lamenting a fact regarding simple respect for veterans 1 day a year or do you dispute what he said?

Maybe you don't care for veterans yourself and that's fine but you cant turn around and call Cherry an a**hole for wanting to.

I have no problem with Veterans and I have no problem with anyone wanting to support them. What I have a problem with is blanket statements about an entire class of people that have no basis in fact whatsoever. I guarantee you there are plenty of immigrant Canadians that wear poppies and there are plenty of natural born Canadians that don't. Don was talking out of his ass because he's old and can no longer censor himself, and he got slapped for it. Good riddance, it should have happened a long time ago.

If a person has been called those things so much that it rolls right off the back, they might want to think about why it keeps happening. Also Kadri is a multimillionaire, he can afford to ignore problems like this because he lives in an insulated world. Many aren't nearly as fortunate.

It keeps happening because it's the last gasp of someone with no argument. Enjoy your ivory tower.

I dunno, I've argued with plenty of people in my life that had no leg to stand on and somehow even in their last gasp they never reached for "Nazi" or "racist." Enjoy your pigsty.
And I've never argued with anyone that used Nazi or racist that had a legitimate point to make. And I will enjoy it. I live in California after all.

By all accounts, Al Campanis was a great guy. But sometimes people show themselves the door.
Gotta say that interview is amazing in the fact that Koppel just flat out called him out on his "baloney" more than once. No shouting, no raging bile duct, just "that's baloney". Something that's sorely missing these days IMO.

I don't want to come across as a right winger, cause I'm not one, but if you honestly think that the timing of when Trudeau did it would matter if he was a conservative, I have some nice swamp land to sell you.
Timing? No. Apologizing for making a poor choice vs. not apologizing because “sorry not sorry”? That is the difference.

The Cherry firing had the feel of an idiot spending his third strike on stealing a pack of cigarettes instead of murder.

Not at all the worst thing he's done, but the latest in a long line.

exactly, like they can make one of these disappear maybe yearly by just playing it off like "oh this silly old man! we'll tell him it's not ok!" but he's been banging out trash hot takes weekly as of late

I think if Cherry was willing to apologize and clarify his stance of not targeting immigrants, people would be upset, but he would still have his job.

I think it's his refusal to apologize that's the problem. You can argue that he wasn't trying to be racist, but the fact is, his comments about people who "come here, enjoy our milk and honey, etc" creates a clear dichotomy and is targeted at immigrants.

I'm sure Ron was forced to issue an apology to save his own skin, too.

If Don wants to refuse a public apology, I see no problem with firing him.

I think this puts a nail in his HOF plans. If he retires, then this black mark is what we're going to remember him by.

Amen

A lot of people in this country think the roughly 50% of people who voted one way are all racists. And the media and social media check-marks feed it.

And those roughly 50% of people live in a fantasy world where a racist TV personality is now the bastion of conservative values. You know, when we put it that way, it makes sense why some people are defending Cherry.

This has a similar vibe to the kneeling for the anthem bullshit.

2 SO wins, but the Coyotes did take 4 points out of Washington and St.Louis, on back to back nights. Lost to the Jackets and Wild in the 2 games before that, but still.

Wish Cherry would of just stuck to talking about hockey and not wonder off on tangents about politics and such.

Sportsnet has some responsibility here. I mean, it's not the first time he's made comments that have ruffled feathers over their airwaves. Yet they still had him as their employee until now.

Regardless of LW/RW politics and media (ir)responsibility, I think we can all agree that Cherry has a decades-old record of xenophobia. He's absolutely a rah-rah Canadian pride dude too and I enjoy that, but he's made no bones about his dislike for 'the other' of any kind for years and years. That's why he ran out of rope. He gets zero benefit of the doubt for borderline comments. That's no one's 'fault' but his own and attributing it to anything political/cultural but Cherry himself is neither accurate nor productive.

Props to you guys for not getting worked up for what could be inflammatory political comments elsewhere, but let's leave the politics out of it where possible.
