JD did speak to the importance of a top center in an interview and no doubt that is on their list. But that is not the same as 'trading' the number 1 because the NY media is bored and who didn't see those 'rumors' put in print. And it's been 45 years since they have had the top pick. JD knows they need a center and is looking for one. But having Lafrenière, who will be an immediate impact player, and Panarin on wing for them isn't likely to change. He's going to be a stud. Given the CAP frozen , having an elite scoring forward for 3 years is a good thing. They can get a center via other avenues. Unless somebody blows their doors off with an offer, I don't see that at all. how many teams have an extra number 1 center to offer as part of a deal?
Those rumors weren't a surprise because the Rangers needing a center isn't a surprise. The Oilers can't extend RNH, that would be a place to start. He's only 27 and needs a new start. He's a top center and with skill on wing on a new team, he'd shine. They also have a pretty good farm system and could move one of their top prospects for another teams top center prospect, depending on the pool of the other team. So that gives them RNH for 5 years, while the 18 yr old they get via draft (this yr or next) or trade has time
They would be crazy to trade the #1. I just don't see it.
