Leafs have really played their top 2 lines most of the game. If history is any indication, it’s that you need those bottom two lines to drive pace, energy, and toughness and is as important those top two lines.

I know a lot of people don't like the leafs, but I was hoping they would win and thought they played better than the blue jackets most of this game. Just couldn't finish. Foudy pulled a Mike Richards on Andersen and that was it.

According to capfriendly, Toronto spent 113M in actual salary on this failed roster.

The Kings spent 59M.

I don't particularly dislike JT, but there's something fun in the schaudenfraude of a guy leaving for supposedly greener pastures to be a hometown hero and watching his former team move on while he's just schlepping around.

And I don't even particularly dislike TO either, lot of players I really enjoy there, but there's always a lot of fun having a team like that go out early.

So the question is, can we get in on some of their panic buys for a defensive overhaul? Or are we out of worthwhile tradeable d-men

I'm sure they're gonna try to find a way to get Pietro. They pretty much just have to.

They can’t afford Pietrangelo, unless they shed about $10M in cap space.

I think the simplest way someone helped me uncomplicate it was by calling it 'postseason' rather than playoff games. These are all games after the conclusion of the regular season. No need to come up with a super elegant solution.

But people are also rightfully peeved because the NHL went out of their way to, uh, 'comfort' the non-playoff teams that it wasn't a playoff team that would win the lottery (which is an obvious insult to everyone's intelligence but that's a different story). Getting the chance to play postseason games and having a possible Lafreniere pick as a consolation price is a slap in the face to the nonplayoff teams.

I get it. We all hate it. Life is imperfect.

Postseason = playoffs. It's far from complicated.

I don't need help understanding that anything that happens after a "regular season" is the "playoffs" no matter how distasteful the draft process is or what they call the "first" round.

As RJ said, the spin was "no team contending for the cup would be winning the lottery." This was a "qualifier" round.

A team in the playoffs won the lottery.

Just have the stats count towards regular season. Or just have a lottery for the 7 teams who didn't qualify. Or have 3 separate tables. Heaven forbid parsing through a row of stats.

Congrats to Connor McDavid for setting a record in a best of 5 series we'll likely never have again, but have it act like it's the same as a best of 7 series.

Wayne Gretzky had 11 points in a best of five first round series in 1981 that went 3 games and I don't even know if that's the all time record. So I'm not worried about McDavid's "record".

This was by definition NOT a "regular" season and the qualifying rounds weren't part of THE "regular season."

The history of the playoffs is not uniform, neither is the history of the draft or the lottery.

We've had best of 3 rounds, best of 5 rounds, hell 100 years ago the Cup wasn't awarded by wins but by total goals.

Not sure why you think the two have to be linked in order to recognize that the performances we just saw were playoff performances and not regular season performances.

I get that we all don't like a playoff team getting to win the 1st overall pick. A regular bunch of Brian Burke's we are.

Also not sure why I decided to wade into this... I'll see myself back out.

Love reading all of your thoughts tho so thanks for helping me survive the last 5 months of no Kings hockey.

Right--I guess it wasn't really clear but I was agreeing with you and trying to further understanding for everyone by avoiding the semantics of 'playoffs/play-ins' by just subbing in 'postseason,' which makes it a lot simpler, and retains to some degree the integrity of the stats (which as you note aren't exactly perfect over the years anyway) instead of adding a column for 2020 shenanigans.

Cheers!

There's one left. If he would agree to go anywhere, it would probably be there. The Leafs can't be worried about the future at this point.

Dang it was really rooting for the Leafs. Now Pens, Oilers, Rangers and Leafs are all in the running for Laf. One of these teams will get a chance at the 1st overall. :thumbd:
