I am not convinced that Lafreniere is guaranteed to be chosen first by every lottery team tonight.
I think it's a possibility a team may need or want a young center bad enough to take Byfield, leaving Lafreniere to the Kings.
Am I nuts for thinking this?

Nope, not nuts. It's been suggested by a few people. Some have even mentioned Stutzle up there too. But I think the pressure will be too much for a team to not take Lafreniere, they'd likely try to trade down, especially given playoff teams could take Byfield/Stutzle at 2 AND snag an extra couple of assets to restock their pipelines a little more.

But also Lafreniere is ready, and if I'm, say, Edmonton, how do I NOT take Laf when I already have McDavid and Draisaitl?

I think it will depend heavily on the team but even though it would take some serious balls it's possible. But yeah, maybe a little crazy, now that I've typed that all out :laugh:

We're gonna see it done in real time like a keno or bingo drawing, they will pull a ball from the machine and that logo wins. Hard to fix that.

I don't think it's nuts. Who are the most likely suspects?

Possibly Pittsburgh (they know the value of a dominant 1C), Nashville (they have never had a dominant 1C), and Minnesota (also don't have a dominant 1C, and their window is closed so they can be patient)

Maybe not nuts, but close to it yes. Laf is a sure thing for #1. People do this is all drafts (not singling you out). They over-think things when lots of time is involved and create some drama when there is none. It's the same across all sport's drafts. There's also mis-information spread by agents, etc. I'd love you to be right because it'd be fantastic to get Laf on the Kings. If it happens -- props to you dude. But i'm calling BS on any outside noise. Laf #1OA is guarentee imo.

If the Kings were to hypothetically trade Drew, I would imagine it would be to a win-now team for a younger defenseman... but if that team had a young, talented defenseman enticing enough to trade Drew for, why would they?

Sergachev? Provorov? Werenski? Chabot?
Yeah, I can't think of a single reason why a smart GM would do it at this point.

Doughty is still a very good defenseman, but he hasn't shown any signs his contract has real value going forward.

I love the criminal creativity on this board. Tony Soprano would be proud. You guys rock!

What team eligible for the #1 would we want to win because they may need a center more than a winger?

Winnipeg (Connor/Ehlers), NY Rangers (Panarin/Kreider) but I think they would still take Lafreniere and sort it out later. Maybe Minnesota in a vacuum would prefer a center, but it's tough to envision a scenario where they'd want to trade out.

I think scouts and teams are afraid to not take the consensus #1. I don't see a scenario that anyone passes on Lafreniere and I'm not convinced he will be the best player 10 years from now.

Same. I do see many scenarios however where a team getting #1 could result in a trade of a big name.

TOR -> Nylander
WPG -> Laine
FLA -> Huberdeau/Barkov (this is a stretch, I know)
EDM -> RNH (driven also by the emergence of Yamamoto)

Yip. Nobody would kill Lombardi for taking Alzner in 2007 instead of Hickey even though Alzner was not a good Top 5 selection. If Hickey became the next Paul Coffey and was drafted later in the 1st round, people still wouldn't rag on the Alzner pick.

It is so easy to not go off the board. To not select Laf at 1OA would be shocking.

Hoping The Wild get the pick. Guessing Pittsburgh. Makes a good story

Wow. Rags get richer

I don’t mind that though. It’s not like they were consistent bottom five finisher with hoards of draft picks
