I think it was worth the risk. He'll get a chance to be in the top 6 with PP time potentially.

Potential lines:

Hall Hughes Bratt
Gusev Hischhier Palmieri
Coleman Zajac Simmonds
Wood Zacha Hayden

D
Vatanen Subban
Greene Severson
Butcher Carrick

Tough for Devils fans to look back at the 2015 draft.

They took Zacha and the next four picks were Provorov, Werenski, Meier and Rantanen. Ouch

Example of why a team shouldn't prioritize current positional need. The scouting team behind that decision was let go soon after. I was personally hoping for Matt Barzal, if only so I could have an excuse to visit Seattle to watch his progress.

Zacha was showing some signs of life in the final 20 games of last season. He won't ever justify his draft position, but he can still be a useful player. Him being listed as a 4th line center looks a little deceiving.

Hughes will probably play a shielded role this season and Zajac/Zacha will still get a decent amount of ice time. Having 4 useful centers hopefully can evoke memories of Arnott-Gomez-Holik-Madden from our heyday. Best case for Zacha would be something similar to Sean Couturier not breaking out until later in his career.

I can't say I know much of him, but RD Chase Priskie is set to become UFA in a couple weeks. He was a 2016 draft pick by Washington and had a good NCAA career. He's opting not to sign with Washington since he'd likely have to start in the AHL. Since he'd have to sign a 2 way contract in any case, he might be looking for the path of least resistance to an NHL roster spot. I'd imagine Blake would kick the tires.

more competition for spots the better

Could be wrong but I think the Kings are currently at 49 contracts with Kempe set to make it 50 and put them at the limit.

EDIT : not sure if/when ELCs for players returned to their CHL teams begin counting against the 50 contract max

They will be at 49 when Kempe signs. Thomas does not count against the 50 contract limit this year.

That picture also reminds me of how Dean Lombardi broke the old compensatory pick system. In 2002, he traded (virtually nothing) for Theo Fleury's rights just to lose him as a free agent. Then teams realized what he was doing and those sort of deals ran rampant through 2004. #47 was given to Calgary for "losing" Curtis Joseph and #49 was given to Nashville for "losing" Ed Belfour.

I used to get a kick out of seeing those types of moves. Mark Messier was also a San Jose Shark.
Sharks acquire rights to Messier -- temporarily

And Mike Richter was briefly an Oiler.
HOCKEY; Oilers Gain Richter's Rights

I almost can't even fault the Oilers for Puljujarvi, he looked so good at the WJC/U18s that year. If anything I'd credit Columbus for sniffing out whatever it is that has prevented Puljujarvi from translating.

The Oilers, in my opinion, have demonstrated a failure to develop proper NHLers and just hope that skill alone will get them by. Aside from first overalls of Connor McDavid and Taylor Hall, have they really developed any other respectable NHLers?

Leon Draisaitl, RNH and Darnell Nurse. But the point is true, they haven't developed nearly enough with how many great picks they have had.

Maybe I posted it in the wrong thread but Broberg is kind of the same issue. All the tools, no toolbox, more of a project than anyone wants to admit, and landing with an organization that raw SUCKS at development as well as fastruns prospects right onto the train tracks.

Bo Callahan is falling! :sarcasm:

Yes, and honestly my mind blanked when I forgot the above. That's embarrassing.

But yes, overall, the Oilers have basically failed for a long time to produce a respectable NHLer with a non-top 10 pick. And even that has been shaky.

It's why they're so top heavy. To find that depth, they then have to turn to free agency or trade, and even with the cap, it doesn't make Edmonton a go-to destination. Trades, you're giving up assets, without the depth to replace them, because they can't seem to find a single diamond in the rough come draft day. Not completely different from the Kings in the last decade or so. Still living on that Martinez pick.

Depth isn't just done with drafting. It's making trades. For example, Lombardi trading Visnovsky for Stoll and Greene.

But I agree with your overall point.
