Dubas got exposed as a rookie GM with Nylander and now Matthews. Matthews got pretty much everything he could have possibly hoped for, 2nd highest AAV, nearly fully signing bonuses and he becomes a UFA at 26, that contract is just insane. Beyond just that contract, Marner is not going to accept very much less, if any at all. Then you have Johnsson and Kapanen who will be demanding substantial raises. I think the biggest sign that Dubas was in over his head is how soon he gave this contract, there was no reason to concede this fast, I can't imagine Matthews could have honestly asked for more no matter how well he played. It'll be interesting to see how he unwinds himself from this cap mess.
whats really killing them is the marleau contract. they knew matthews, marner, nylander were all getting mega deals and they still gave marleau the 3rd year.

Agree, caving to Nylander was the big mistake put the org in weak position w Matthews.

ducks have been worse

Sorry to barge in, but no one has been worse than Colorado and Ottawa since Dec 8th. Both Avs and Sens collected 13 points, Ducks collected 14 and for instance, your Kings got 25. Avs could be heading for two top 5 picks at this pace.

I've never seen anything like this. The Kings are 6 points out of a playoff spot but also last place in the West. What a crazy year this has been.

Nice pickup for Shero, getting a 2nd for a bottom tier forward. Will up the ante on the top liners out there.

However, Nashville is all in and Boyle is a solid vet who gives them depth.

Nashville often overpays for trade deadline additions. I like that their GM is not afraid to identify who they want and go for it.

Look at that, 34 yo UFA Boyle gets a late 2nd rounder. Toffoli has to be worth a late 1st and project player now!

Also, what is NSH doing with that trade? Boyle is barely a 4th liner if I look at their current roster. Maybe he'll be traded again?

And almost always for guys they shouldn't have to overpay for.

Poile has had an interesting GM career to be sure. The GM of only 2 teams for 37 consecutive years, and no Cup. Unheard of.

but yet he does not deserve to be replaced. I wish more teams would give their GMs the rope he has. Maybe he can really sell a vision and plan

I think that Boyle gives them a veteran influence and a leader for that playoff run. These types of guys can channel something for that late season run because the career light is fading. He wore the A in NJ and he could be like Iginla was for us in his short stint.

It also could signifiy that NJ is waiving the white flag and go in the tank mode.

Oilers have lost 6 straight, fans are throwing jerseys on the ice again, they are three points ahead of last place in the Pacific, yet are only three points out of a playoff spot. Perhaps the top four teams in the West should just get a bye in the first round

Okay, you win. The Avs suck.

I can’t wait for Mirtle to eat some major crow about Matthews, Marner, and Nylander.

He swore up and down the trio would be signed for significantly less than $30 mill combined.

With Nylander at 6.9, Matthews at 11.6, and Marner at least 10, that’s looking like 28.5 combined.
I will take the insignificant $1.5M that is left over. Thanks.

Any fan who criticizes a star player for taking market value is a moron.
No, criticize the GM for being lousy at negotiations. That is the correct stance to take.

If you are going to give up that much in cap hit for an RFA, at least buy more of the RFA years as Dean did with Doughty on his 2nd contract. The Matthews contract sucks for the Leafs.

The only good thing I see for the Leafs is that there isn't an NMC until the last year of the deal.

If you want to think the player isn't worth market value or the market is out of wack that is fine, but when fans criticize a player for not taking a "discount" it's beyond ridiculous.

I just see the Matthews contract as a pretty one-sided negotiation. Dean used his leverage when Doughty was an RFA to buy some UFA years. One has to wonder if Dubas even tried to use any of the leverage he had at his disposal.

Matthews' rights are controlled by the Leafs, just as Doughty's rights were controlled by the Kings. Dean let Doughty sit out until he negotiated.
