inb4 criticism of lombardi for not topping that offer

Yak couldn't ask for a better situation for success, can be insulated, has russians around, play a skill/tempo game

Yakupov traded to St. Louis for Zach Pochiro and a conditional 3rd round pick. Oilers have traded 2 out of their 4 1st overall picks this year

Quebec/Colorado traded all 3 of their 1st overall picks before they won the Cup. They got back a ton more than Edmonton has, but the early to mid 90's were a different time. And nobody was calling any of them busts before they were traded.

Not a bad gamble. 3rd round pick and an AHL player if he sucks. 2nd round if he puts up over 15 goals. Good reclamation project.

We got the Gooch as our reclamation project this year so it's all good.

Not sure where you got "bust" from. I was just reporting what happened and making a note of it. I was hoping that eventually the Oilers would trade at least 1 of those players to improve their roster and I think they traded the right players in Hall and Yakupov. And if anything, having traded both of those players shows that this new management is not just going to sit on their hands and wait.

Regarding Yakupov trade from Edmonton to St. Louis: NO salary retained

That was the sticking point w/Hawks...

Low risk, high reward situation, a blue chip player with skill for a bargain price.

I think Yak will do fine playing with Taresenko on the blues. He came into the old mess that Edmonton was and that and endless trade rumors didn't help. Different environment

There are rumblings tonight that Kris Russell will be signing with EDM, too.

As @FriedgeHNIC first speculated, hearing that Oilers are finalizing one-year deal for $3.1 million with UFA D-man Kris Russell.

Not from you, just the general consensus from basically all discussion of Yakupov over the years. Since Edmonton and Quebec are the only teams that have gotten 3 consecutive #1 picks, it's an easy comparison to make when people talk about what Edmonton does, doesn't, should, or shouldn't do. None of those Quebec picks were ever looked as a player not living up to their potential though, and the cap wasn't a thing, which is why people can't really fault Chiarelli for the return he just got for a former #1 pick.

Thanks for the clarification. And I completely agree

I just have to say that it bothers me so much that the two backup goalies we had in our two championship runs are now playing for the top two teams that I hate, Anaheim and San Jose.

Yeah.... trading them out of the division really worked out.

Well it didn't take Gudas long, he injured another player (Czarnik) in a game vs Bruinis. Late blindside High shoulder to face...NHL DPS is reviewing.
For the Kings sake, I hope he gets suspended before Toffoli ends up in IR...
He got 3 last yr so he should get at least 5. Shame it can't be 82

there is short video look in here.

Jonathan HUberdeau got a skate laceration injury in tonights game. Hope for the Cat's sake, the tendon wasn't completely severed.

A severed Achilles tendon can be a 6+ month recovery but partial tears can be much less, as in 4 to 8 wks or 8 to 12 wks. Wait-and-see time.

Derek MacKenzie named new captain of the Florida Panthers. Tip of the cap to former captain (and former King) Willie Mitchell.

Would we weally want to go in that direction again?

Aww, you just couldn't help yourself, could you?

The Florida Panthers made Aaron Ekblad an assistant captain. It seems likely that the plan is for him to be a future captain. I like how he's been getting an apprenticeship in leadership and the workings of the NHL with Mitchell and then, likely, with MacKenzie, instead of the team having no captain his 18-year-old year and then throwing Ekblad in the deep end and making him a teenage captain.

Both Weal and Vey hit waivers this week, goes to show you how tough it is for these guys who were considered top offensive threats in the WHL and AHL to transition that success to the NHL. Not every smallish forward can be like Johnny Gaudreau or Tyler Johnson.

I think the last smallish forward the Kings had drafted who had success at this level was Michael Cammalleri, and that was way back in 2001.

The thing is, no one knew about until the next morning when he came in "sick". They claim he wasn't hit or anything in practice.

PIT coach Mike Sullivan said they would prefer to keep in house what specifically in Fri's practice may have led to Crosby's concussion.

1:36 PM - 10 Oct 2016

That's a shame, since last Jan when Sullivan took over, he's player very well and I thought was really strong in the WC. Although he took a couple pretty good sshots, I remember both Kessler and Dubinsky hitting him hard. He's not played in the preseason because he 'wasn't feeling well'.
The more of those you get, the riskier your future is, with the long term affects.

in his 30 thoughts column yesterday ,Friedman mentioned that he's heard at least 1 team 'talk' to Kucherov about an offer sheet. Which might be why TB is amping up their talks and today on TSN the report was that they hope to have him under contract by Wens, although that would require moving salary unless they use Callahan's injury and worry about the CAP next month. Also, they didn't rule out a 2 to 3 yr deal. And I think his assumption is correct that he's not been signed yet because they expected he'd take a home town discount like Stamkos and Hedman . But he hasn't budged.

Flames resigned Johnny Hockey, six years, 6.75M

Good for Treliving to draw a iine in the ice and not cross it. JG wanted 8 x 8 and the Trellving held firm at the 6.7 mark that he offered. He held the cards
http://www.tsn.ca/gaudreau-signs-six-year-40-5m-deal-with-flames-1.582739

Gaudreau, 23, was not eligible to be courted with an offer sheet and he also did not hold any arbitration rights. His only leverage was to sit out games or ask for a trade.

And I think that's fair , given Monahan's deal, IMO, he's not only going to develop in to a top center in the NHL but a leader as well. I think his value to that team over the next half dozen years will be every bit as important if not more so than Gaudreau
He 'talked' to JG last week and whatever he said did the trick. He's also reached out to Tzachuk to help him as he begins his career. You add Brennan and that's a pretty good top 4 for the Flames for the next several years. And eventually, Hunter Shinkaruk will be a part of that.
New coach, new philosophy, new system, should be good year for the Flames.

NHL canned Gudas for 6 games for his head shot to Czarnick. So at least the Kings won't lose a player during the home opener.
