You don't think 5 years at $5.75m was the biggest factor for the attempted termination?
I’d say the drugs were but there’s no way either of us will ever know for sure and there’s no prize for being right so…

First cup for sure. Solved the huge issue that the Kings had with no 2nd line center (sorry JT_Dutch, wherever you are).

Second one he was below replacement level. The Chicago series in particular was extended because our 4th line couldn't keep the puck out of the net.
Is there a place to check those stats of the 4th line that year

You used to be able to check them on NHL.com under "Game Summary" where it would list who was on the ice for goals for and goals against. Not sure if it's still accessible.

You could also check this board, as I know I posted them before. I was at every game in Chicago and it seemed like every goal was against that line so I went ahead and researched it since even by that point I was still battling people who didn't want to believe what should have been apparent to everyone.

Just doing a quick look at +/-

Richards and Lewis were a -6 during those playoffs, Clifford was a -2, Nolan was a -3. That was the combination of 4th liners that spring. The next worst +/- on the team among forwards was Carter and King who were tied at +5, in fairness to Carter he had to start out the playoffs on Richards wing, and that was likely the reason his +/- wasn't as good as his linemates the rest of the run (Toffoli and Pearson). I'm not 100% sure but I think King might have been the LW with Richards and Carter for the first two games in SJ, so that probably explains his being worse than his other linemates (Stoll and Williams). Whoever played with Richards that spring was going to be on the ice for a lot of goals against, he was that bad defensively. Not due to effort, his body had just completely quit on him by that point.

The 2014 team had a better more talented Top 9 than the 2012 team, but the 2012 team had a functioning 4th line which 2014 didn't.

We absolutely would have heard about a border arrest even if it was Carter.

I'm certain Richards had serious immigration issues. I believe he lost his work visa. He could have applied for a waiver but the application process takes 6 months. That means no training camp and missing the first 3 months of the season.

I also think I know why he reportedly didn't tell the kings. He wanted to make it past the buyout window. the kings did not have anyone in arbitration so making it past the buyout window would have meant getting his full $6 million salary vs. 2/3 of it - $2 million at issue. People would do a lot for $2 million.

everything about what happened screams immigration issues. It fits all the facts, current immigration law, the timeline, and even Bill Daly's comments on the matter. It also explains why the Caps were consulting outside immigration attorneys prior to signing him.

Richards really was one of the best Kings in the 2013 playoffs. Crazy how much changed within a year where he went from being a pivotal piece to a Colin Fraser replacement. No regrets with that move, save for not buying him out when he should've been, but the Cup hangover probably saved Richards, until that fateful draft day...

Cup hangover happens to a lot of people. For some, it makes them hungrier. For others, they lose their drive. Just look at Kuznetsov and the Caps.

Fair enough.

But do you think the Kings would have attempted to terminate had it happened in June 2012 instead of June 2015?
Or had it been Doughty? Carter? King? Clifford?

Richards contract was obviously a disaster, probably the worst in the league by that time. A traditional buyout would have helped some, but not much in the short term.

no. But it's not the same situation. Part of the analysis for material breach would be time remaining on the contract. 2012 is an extra 3 years. It makes FUBARing one year less impactful with 8 years left vs 5.

Edit: Also impact on the season would have been minor if at all. That was the lockout season. It didn't start until mid January. Had it been 2012, Richards would have missed 0 games and would have been able to attend all of camp. The 6 month waiver application period would have ended in mid to late Dec.

Certainly both. He won at every level of hockey, and I believe is one of the 2 or 3 players that pulled that off.

The trade for Richards was impactful, it was DL sending everyone a signal that he was gunning for the cup. I don’t think we get Jeff Carter without Richards on the team. So the trade was very impactful and changed the organization.

I wonder where the Kings would be if Richards had a frame that held up, Voynov could keep his cool etc. Cup wins obviously got to certain players, and that’s something you can’t plan for as a GM.

DL had it set up for the Kings to be in the hunt for a while, not just those three incredible seasons. As DL would learn and say often, staying on top is much harder than rebuilding.

Carolina Hurricanes Sign Eric Gelinas

Canes signed Eric Gelinas , whose been in Europe for a few years, to a 1 yr. deal 750K. i'm guessing they hope that his good season last year is a sign he can be a bottom pairing D, in the NHL. With him added to Slavin, Pesce, SKjei, Bean, Gardnier, Keane and Lajoie, it makes Gardnier moveable, they need his 4M to sign Hamiliton, I think.

And Elliotte Friedman in his recent 31 thoughts Podcast, hinted (via a trusted source) that Rod Brind'amour might be moving on. Which isn't a total surprise, given how cheap Dundon is. I get Brind'amour love Carolina, but that rumored offer of 1.8 M per year is an insult. And he's done about as much as he can for that team post season, for an owner whose too cheap to pony up and get a goalie. So it wouldn't surprise me if the Kraken offered him like 5M per.

They probably want him to sign elsewhere or re-sign with them ASAP so they aren't wasting a spot in the expansion on a pending UFA. They have like 12 good players (5 defenseman, if you include Hamilton) who are signed/RFA & potentially exposed.

Keep on eye them as a team the Kings might go to to get a player they would otherwise lose or have to give up assets to not lose. Just a thought....

This is what ended it all for Mike Richards, IMO:

Someone is in denial about the true condition of the state of California.
Nah, I just don't get my opinion about it from the "news". I live here and while California has flaws it's still a great place to live. I may have to move away, but it's not because I want to, housing just isn't affordable. And no, that doesn't have anything to do with taxes either.

Funny how you only ever hear about "the sad state of California" from a certain demographic. Wonder why that is?

Richards was vital in the finals against the Rags. The games are all on youtube in full, go back and watch them if you don't (want to) remember.

You're the one who likes to dunk on other parts of the country for some reason, many of which I assume you haven't been to?

Having to leave won't be the end of the world, I have lived in CA, PA, MI, NY, NV, IL and WI and have thoroughly enjoyed each place with the exception of NYC which was just to much for me. And I assume you will enjoy wherever you have to go to afford a good home. This is a wonderful country with many wonderful and unique places to live. But I do concede that most people have a mindset more similar to you than me, in that they think where they live in the best place in the world. That is one of the reasons the vast majority of people never live more than 50 miles from where they were born.

And yes, you are correct it is a certain type of person leaving CA, and yes it's mostly due to home prices, but it is also due to taxes and culture as well. But it's also not optimal for a state to lose so many middle to upper middle class people. Just curious, why do you think so many middle to upper middle class people choose to leave?

Goodluck with any move, use a moving company, the shortage of UHaul's in CA make it cheaper to use a moving company, sometimes even before you factor in gas prices which are obviously insane now.

Why would someone buy a team and not be willing to spend the money necessary to compete?

This is like buying a $10m house and furnishing it with Ikea stuff. How does the NHL keep letting guys like this buy teams?

You should assume less. I've been all over the US and the world frankly, did a lot of traveling before having kids. You're right, there are a lot of nice places in this country. Unfortunately many of them are infested with lots of shitty people. As for why people are leaving California, that's already been covered and this is all way off topic so I'm gonna end it here.

Gelinas got a two way deal, so they probably aren't counting on him cracking their top 7. Gelinas has such a good slap shot but was just an adventure defensively, it got to the point where the Devils would use him as a 4th line winger at even strength just to have him available to use on the PP.

The Gardiner deal is pretty rough (4.2 mil next season, 4.45 mil the following year). It's amusing knowing the fervor that a lot of Devils fans had that summer wanting to sign Gardiner but I think that was a case of irrational jealousy that other teams were signing free agents and we weren't.

If it were me, I'd trade Brady Skjei and use that money to keep Hamilton but perhaps nobody has the cap space for Skjei (5.25 AAV) and/or Carolina doesn't want to take a L on dumping him after giving up a late first rounder for him.
