Thanks for explaining it to me without needing the Mayor to explain it to me as well.
It is illegal if you use the rule book literally. Thing is, they never do that for charging as "distance traveled" or "violence" are never legislated. I've already given numerous examples and, as someone with a Deadmarsh-related username, you've certainly been around hockey long enough to know that this hit would not be penalized without the injury. Were penalizing the result and the optics over the actual action and, by doing so, are making a decision to apparently change the spirit of how a rule is interpreted.
If they want to crack down on "violent" hits and start somehow taking into account how far a player travels and actually hand out charging penalties like they do slashing then fine (although I'd might have to stop watching) but, you know, do that at the start of the season so everyone is on the same page and knows the repercussions before they lose four playoff games over it.
Perfectly stated. I'm full tin foil on it though with this being a "get the Jets out of the playoffs" move because this does not seem like a Parros and the DoPS reaction. The mob gets their blood and the league has a better chance of Montreal making the "WCF". While I don't care about the Jets or the Canadiens, I do care about this hit now being considered a lengthy suspension. Every player now has to think twice about making a hit if they are going too fast.
Only positive is that the Kings appear to be ahead of the curve with how hitting will be from now on based on the last few seasons. Maybe Blake actually is a genius and is getting them used to forechecking being outlawed on a dump in early so they can take advantage.
