Mark Scheifele snapped.
That’s the only way I can get my head around a star player of his stature doing something so out of character in Game 1 of the Canadiens-Jets series Wednesday night.
It came after a night in which, for whatever reason, Scheifele found himself in a number of scrums, again somewhat out of character. The final act seemed to be him boiling over after a night of frustration.
Which reminded me so much of when a fellow star player also snapped in a playoff game.
In Game 2 of a first-round series with Columbus, the 62-win Lightning suddenly on the ropes against Columbus, Nikita Kucherov boarded a defenceless Markus Nutivaara. It was a dangerous, reckless play. I was in the building that night in Tampa and one thing I remember is how Kucherov seemed unhinged most of the game, looking for trouble.
It netted the Hart Trophy winner a one-game suspension at the most critical time with the Bolts’ desperate for a win in Game 3.
They would get swept, of course.
Six months later, I caught up with Kucherov after a morning skate in Toronto. He has rarely ever spoken of the incident.
But it was clear it still weighed on him at the time.
“That was something where emotion got over me,” Kucherov told me. “That was definitely stupid by me. I didn’t mean to hurt the guy or do anything bad. It’s a learning process. I know from now on I can’t do that stuff (especially) in the playoffs. I want to make sure I’m at the top of my game.’’
I will also remember the look in his eyes when he said that. The serious look of a proud athlete who would not let him team down again that way.
I don’t have to tell you how well Kucherov played in the bubble last summer and the ensuing Stanley Cup championship.
And so here’s hoping Scheifele learns from this as well. Jake Evans is out indefinitely with a concussion although it was positive to know the Habs forward didn’t need to go to the hospital.
