I've seen the same amount who say it's a charge and suspension worthy without a doubt...
Right, and that's fine. That's why it's not such an open/shut case as those calling for a major suspension are making it out to be.
And it's a helluva tough job the guys on DoPS have.

Well, a bunch of people are questioning whether it is even a charge, and the rule book is worded in a way that they are open to interpretation so it's not a wild idea to call the charging penalty questionable.

People who are questioning whether or not that is a charge don’t even know what a charging penalty is.

I guess those guys involved in the game during the toughest era of the sport wouldn’t know either, right? Seeing the reactions from a long-time and we’ll respected official like Fraser, and a former goon in Nilan probably holds more merit than guys on a message board who don’t know the rules.

Paul Bissonnette thinks he’ll get two games as well.

Kerry Fraser, thankfully, doesn't know what high sticking is during the toughest era of the sport. Seriously though, I expect any ref to not like the hit.

Nilan still bleeds rouge and blanc. His blood would not be boiling if the hit was reversed.

Biz is interesting: does he think it "deserves" two games or does he "think" it will get two games? I think it will lead to a suspension as well but that doesn't mean I think it is deserved.

LeBrun also had a good piece on the Athletic about the hit. As he noted, Scheifele was simmering in that game, and that hit was the boiling point.

LeBrun: How much money could Grubauer make this offseason? And the fallout from Scheifele's hit on Evans
Mark Scheifele snapped.

That’s the only way I can get my head around a star player of his stature doing something so out of character in Game 1 of the Canadiens-Jets series Wednesday night.

It came after a night in which, for whatever reason, Scheifele found himself in a number of scrums, again somewhat out of character. The final act seemed to be him boiling over after a night of frustration.

Which reminded me so much of when a fellow star player also snapped in a playoff game.
In Game 2 of a first-round series with Columbus, the 62-win Lightning suddenly on the ropes against Columbus, Nikita Kucherov boarded a defenceless Markus Nutivaara. It was a dangerous, reckless play. I was in the building that night in Tampa and one thing I remember is how Kucherov seemed unhinged most of the game, looking for trouble.

It netted the Hart Trophy winner a one-game suspension at the most critical time with the Bolts’ desperate for a win in Game 3.

They would get swept, of course.

Six months later, I caught up with Kucherov after a morning skate in Toronto. He has rarely ever spoken of the incident.

But it was clear it still weighed on him at the time.

“That was something where emotion got over me,” Kucherov told me. “That was definitely stupid by me. I didn’t mean to hurt the guy or do anything bad. It’s a learning process. I know from now on I can’t do that stuff (especially) in the playoffs. I want to make sure I’m at the top of my game.’’

I will also remember the look in his eyes when he said that. The serious look of a proud athlete who would not let him team down again that way.

I don’t have to tell you how well Kucherov played in the bubble last summer and the ensuing Stanley Cup championship.

And so here’s hoping Scheifele learns from this as well. Jake Evans is out indefinitely with a concussion although it was positive to know the Habs forward didn’t need to go to the hospital.

Seems like nobody really knows what a charging penalty is. Nowhere in the rule books does it say upward launch results in a charging penalty.

Anyways, I don't necessarily see upward launch, at least nothing that is unusually excessive for a hard hit like that.
Have yet to see a definitive angle that shows any head contact.

He sprinted like 160ft and glided the rest of the way which is bs..Yes he does leave his feet...Saw the entire sprint Scheifele made on video from start to finish.
So because he chased the guy from the o-zone, he's now not allowed to hit anyone?

The leaving his feet question has always been is he jumping to make the hit. In this case, his feet are off the ice as a result of the collision, not jumping to make the hit.

So essentially suspended for going too fast. I've watched (and played) a lot of hockey and I've never seen a suspension made for that reason.

The rule for charging is simple. Needs to check two boxes:

- is it a violent hit? yes
- was the hit violent because of how great a distance was travelled? also yes

impressive

1 game for absolutely demolishing a guy straight through the numbers from behind into the boards as bigking mentioned earlier, 4 for this... wheel of justice alright

i'd like to see him appeal this if the crux of the NHL's argument is that he is somehow conceding the empty net goal. there's just a lot of hypocrisy in that explanation given the kind of decisions they've doled out lately

.. is what it is i guess

The Canadiens suddenly find themselves in a good spot to advance to the Conference Finals.

1 game up, home ice now in their favor, and the Jets top scorer out for the next 4 games.

Completely fine with the numbers of games. Wouldn’t be surprised if he appeared and it was reduced by a game. Believe this is his first infraction.

Talked to a fiend of mine who players a few years of lower level pro hockey and he figured at least two games.

Guess George Parros’ magic 8 ball came up with 4 games this time, next one should be just as random.
This could be a new pre-game or intermission feature on TV broadcasts. Player shows up in nice street clothes knowing he is at least getting a one game suspension. Parros spins the wheel to see how many games the suspension will last.

Wait, maybe we need 100 ping pong balls with different number combinations, which would equate to the number of games suspended.
