Ray Emery drowns...

Former NHL goalie Ray Emery dies in apparent drowning

Emery, 35, was reportedly swimming with friends at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club around 6 a.m. when he didn't resurface. Rescue efforts were switched to recovery as the hours went by.

Literally can see it from our offices where I work. It’s part of the Hamilton Harbour. There is a break wall and several boat slips in the area as well.

The waters can get pretty choppy when windy but there was not much wind if any today.

Sounds like he didn't come up after diving in.

Makes me wonder if he hit his head on something when he dove into the water.
This happened to a friend of mine. Dove into a pool and hit his head on the bottom. He broke his neck and was instantly paralyzed. He would have died had it not been for the fact that someone was able to pull him out of the water at the last second. He's a paraplegic to this day because of it.

Very sad to hear about Emery.

Many accidents just like that happen at the beach every year too. People run and dive right in, not knowing there's a sandbar only a few feet below. One of the 1st things I was taught when I started surfing was how to fall in shallow water and not to dive head first into the ocean.

In this instance, there may have been alcohol involved according to someone that I had spoken to.

Apparently Ray Emery was in town for a charity event hosted by Zac Rinaldo and some guys went out on a boat afterwards. Sounds as if one thing led to another and this unfortunate accident happened.

Alcohol or not this is terrible.

Seemed to be respected by all. Thought he would be great TV analyst some day.

All these "master" GMs signing players at sweetheart deals.

And not winning.

I get nervous when a divisional opponent make a good value signing. There is a long list of key Flame players with youth, locked in for good contracts. It is setting up a good based in Calgary that I do not like as a King's fan. Hopefully they keep not winning

agreed.
They have some good goalie prospects on the way. I bet Calgary lands Lehtonen or Mason on a 1 year show me deal this year. You're not winning a cup with that goaltending IMO but the rest of the team looks very deep.

Absolutely. And Gillies (as soon as this year) or Parsons (though he struggled between their two affiliates) could be the answer long-term.

Is that contract mastery? He'll be 24 in Dec, and hasn't cracked 20 goals or 50 points. He can win a faceoff though.
No, no, 7824, these guys are magicians and we could only be so lucky to have sweetheart deals and zero cups and all the pizzazz till it matters.

I was going to say, holy christ...if that's GM Mastery.....he signed a player who has good potential to a long term deal without knowing if the player can deliver....if he turns out like William Karlsson, great great play, if he turns out like Jesper Knutsen....not so much.

But the great majority of these guys are in their RFA years AND/or they're getting slightly overpaid like the middle-class players they are reflective of Calgary's mediocrity. Gaudreau is on a phenomenal deal, but who else is on a steal contract? Backlund is appropriately compensated imo, Monahan's 6.3 might look real good by the end of the deal but then he's a UFA so if he doesn't deliver then it's junk and if he does deliver he'll get a bloated UFA deal...honestly if they had even one 'bad' contract, they'd be getting scrutinized a lot more for their production vs. value because they only have 8 million in space with Jankowski and Hanifin to sign this year and Tkachuk and Bennett (and Lazar but he's gone) next and nobody departing. Sure you expect some guys to grow a bit more, but Gio is slowing down, Backlund is almost 30, etc...it's not roses and gold up there.

I appreciate you recognizing kind of under the radar signings, but he's got an easy job with a bunch of kids right now and he's still finding a way to big against himself for the mediocre ones. Major props on the Gaudreau one though and maybe Brodie if he bounces back.

I think Gaudreau, Monahan, Backlund, Lindhol, Hamilton (deal was signed as a flames), Hamonic and Giodrano are all value signings. Not saying steals for all but far from overpayments. The black eye is Brouwer, so I think they have their one.

who said they would rather have the value contracts and no cups? Jumping to assumptions much? A person can say/like another teams contracts and contract situation without inferring anything about any of LA's contracts.

I do think Quick, Carter, Toffoli, Lewis, Pearson, Muzzin and Martinez are all on team friendly contracts.

I'm commenting purely on the high praise these fluff GMs receive, from this very critical board

That is the extent of my ire/frustration. These "great" GMs who have won as much as Blake/Taylor, etc has.

My hyperbole wasn't without merit.

Quick and Carter are pre-2013 contracts. With the other ones, if you go by the every 10 points = $1m in cap space theory, they're all right around where they should be based on career averages. Martinez is a bit high, but it could be said he's getting paid for having jazz hands.

I have never heard of the 10 points = $1m.
