He has a point about Doughty and the appeal Toronto could have.
If Drew wants to go home and finish his career playing for his home-province team it does line up really well for the Leafs. Let's be honest they are going to be a dominant team when Drew hits UFA, I don't think K17 is wrong in saying anyone would want to play there. Plus Drew would be their marquee star along with Matthews and would walk on water if he ever lead them to the cup.
But Drew could also be content to stay in LA where he lives in relative anonymity , play his entire career with one team and perhaps go down as the best King of alltime.
We just don't know what's going through Drew's head, if he wants to stay here you sign him, period but if he says he wants to test FA or play closer to home the Kings have to trade him sometime before his contract is up. We won't have a good enough roster to contend and he would bring back a massive return, even as a rental.
But again, if he wants to sign and finish his career here you make it happen.[/QUOTE]
Well said.
As for the bolded areas:
'content' is not a word in DD's vocabulary. Esp at the age of 29. If he were 35 maybe he'd be 'content' but I don't think that will ever be a word used to associate with him. He's the heart and soul of this team and its' his passion that drives them.
I don't think he'd be 'content' to stay.
As far as the Kings signing him and 'you make that happen'. With what money? His agent will hold all the marbles. DD as the best defenseman in the game will command in the 10M range or more. Kopi getting 10 and TT and TP will probably get 11 between them. That's not counting the other contracts that have to be signed. And wouldn't close to 20M on 2 players handcuff the Kings as bad the Hawks?
I think DD would love nothing better than to help lead the LEafs to the first Cup in Toronto in decades. Hometown hero. ANd he won't be the only FA heading north. That team will be a favorable destination.
But as was pointed out, Matthews and Marner will command major bucks. ANd their ELC's are done that same year. Nylander is entering his last year. Tough choice for them ,not unlike what the Bolts are going thru. They need a top defenseman and every rumor I've heard indicates that will trade for one. (JVR and possibility Kapanen to get tha) So if that happens, that will be their #1. And given what that does to the CAP , it might mean than Nylander would get traded. They just committed 30M over 7 to Nikita Zaitsev. And Reilly's locked up long term. Gardner's up in 2 yrs and I'm not sure how they proceed there. So I don't see DD being a possibility there.
Leafs have 7 very good young players coming off rookie deals over the next 2 yrs and some tough decisions.

The reality of negotiating a player's second NHL contract when the rookie deal comes to an end is staggered for the Leafs over the next three summers. Brown, Zaitsev and Hyman will be RFAs this summer, Nylander and Soshnikov are up in 2018 and Matthews and Marner -- the most significant players -- aren't up until 2019.
But it doesn't mean DD won't sign elsewhere, with a contender who does have the bucks and need.
