He has a point about Doughty and the appeal Toronto could have.

If Drew wants to go home and finish his career playing for his home-province team it does line up really well for the Leafs. Let's be honest they are going to be a dominant team when Drew hits UFA, I don't think K17 is wrong in saying anyone would want to play there. Plus Drew would be their marquee star along with Matthews and would walk on water if he ever lead them to the cup.

But Drew could also be content to stay in LA where he lives in relative anonymity , play his entire career with one team and perhaps go down as the best King of alltime.

We just don't know what's going through Drew's head, if he wants to stay here you sign him, period but if he says he wants to test FA or play closer to home the Kings have to trade him sometime before his contract is up. We won't have a good enough roster to contend and he would bring back a massive return, even as a rental.

But again, if he wants to sign and finish his career here you make it happen.

You have to think 5 years ahead constantly. That's a very real scenario.

The Kings are in their current situation because Dean didn't do that.

No reason to worry about Doughty when, as Herby said, we don't know one way or the other. That's a franchise altering situation, either way, so until there's any sort of actual news, why even start with it.

It's the reality of the situation. Doughty wanting to leave to join an up and coming team isn't far fetched.

i though last night how close the Oilers were to both McDavid AND Matthews. Hell, even Eichel, can you imagine? Poolparty is gonna be awesome in his own right, but McDavid/Matthews would be as new era Gretzky/Kurri as one could get (or Gretz/Lemieux given both centers).

Probably would have only been able to afford both for their entry level deals, as both will command $10M+ on their second deals, or at least McDavid will, and Matthews won't be cheap.

Sharks aren't living off their pp this year in the playoffs. 1-14 so far, last year they were like 7-8 against the Kings and Burns got every shot through.

For what it's worth, Drew has stated that he loves playing for Babcock.

In the Olympics, while playing for Babcock, Drew looks like the best player in the world. Even when he was only 18. It makes me jealous. I wish he looked like that while playing for us.

I hate saying it, but I think the Ducks have a pretty good chance at making an SC run. The west is pretty weak. I'm rooting for Nashville.

Well said.

As for the bolded areas:

'content' is not a word in DD's vocabulary. Esp at the age of 29. If he were 35 maybe he'd be 'content' but I don't think that will ever be a word used to associate with him. He's the heart and soul of this team and its' his passion that drives them.
I don't think he'd be 'content' to stay.

As far as the Kings signing him and 'you make that happen'. With what money? His agent will hold all the marbles. DD as the best defenseman in the game will command in the 10M range or more. Kopi getting 10 and TT and TP will probably get 11 between them. That's not counting the other contracts that have to be signed. And wouldn't close to 20M on 2 players handcuff the Kings as bad the Hawks?

I think DD would love nothing better than to help lead the LEafs to the first Cup in Toronto in decades. Hometown hero. ANd he won't be the only FA heading north. That team will be a favorable destination.

But as was pointed out, Matthews and Marner will command major bucks. ANd their ELC's are done that same year. Nylander is entering his last year. Tough choice for them ,not unlike what the Bolts are going thru. They need a top defenseman and every rumor I've heard indicates that will trade for one. (JVR and possibility Kapanen to get tha) So if that happens, that will be their #1. And given what that does to the CAP , it might mean than Nylander would get traded. They just committed 30M over 7 to Nikita Zaitsev. And Reilly's locked up long term. Gardner's up in 2 yrs and I'm not sure how they proceed there. So I don't see DD being a possibility there.

Leafs have 7 very good young players coming off rookie deals over the next 2 yrs and some tough decisions.

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/maple-leafs-cap-cup-outlook-improved-short-span/

The reality of negotiating a player's second NHL contract when the rookie deal comes to an end is staggered for the Leafs over the next three summers. Brown, Zaitsev and Hyman will be RFAs this summer, Nylander and Soshnikov are up in 2018 and Matthews and Marner -- the most significant players -- aren't up until 2019.

But it doesn't mean DD won't sign elsewhere, with a contender who does have the bucks and need.

It's funny watching Atkinson. He is exactly the type of player the Kings desperately need, and a player that the Kings would never have considered the past decade.

Looking forward to being more skilled.

A 5'9 skilled forward who can score...
Weal was the closest we had, Sutter tried to use him as a grinder and sucked the skill right out of him. Hope he does well in Philly.

Weal didn't step right into the Philly lineup, he had to spend about a year having the Kings system sucked out of him

Are the Leafs preparing for Mathews eventual return to Arizona? Have you seen the women in Arizona compared to Toronto?? Man's gotta eat!

Matthews did say that his favorite playoff memory was the Coyotes/Kings series in 2012.

Luc Robitaille and Rob Blake are also very close to Pat Brisson, who happens to be the agent for Auston Matthews. Hmm...

Then scored 8 goals in 23 games as a Flyer. Mission accomplished.:yo:

I hope this is the same with Shore whoever the new coach is and let him be a playmaker he was in the AHL.

The Oilers have shutdown Burns, something the Kings could never do. He had 19 shot attempts in one game last year, tonight 1 shot on 3 attempts. This doesn't look like the same Sharks team from last year.
