I'm torn on fighting. I think hockey needs to be policed a little ala that Russian hit.

But the stories of these enforcers are heartbreaking.

I'm with you. It's tough, and my heart goes out to the guys who love the game and their teammates so much that this is the lifestyle they choose. But I despise staged fights. I DO want the players to police themselves and have some respect of other so rats like Shaw aren't running the game fearlessly and I think what that looks like in the new era is guys that can take a regular shift have to be able to hand down their own beatings (cough remove the instigator cough) but who knows what the league is moving towards. My personal conspiracy theory is they want fighting out in a bigger way but making that move is an admission of guilt in the concussion suits.

Yeah, hockey has always been weird that way. Old time hockey can be entertaining, it can get you emotionally involved as a fan, and can create real animosity between teams, but the evidence is what it is, and there's too much money involved not to at least slowing get rid of it. Not just the potential lawsuits and future participation by kids growing up, but the tens of millions of dollars the players get paid today. Owners can't want those guys out with concussions.

It's rather interesting to read the reactions of Oilers fans towards Milan Lucic. Midway through the season and it seems like fans are torn on his performance. Some view him as a "culture changer" whereas others view him and his contract as a big concern moving forward.

Lucic has been bumped down the lineup, as he's been outplayed by Patrick Maroon, and his last goal came on December 21 against the Coyotes. In the 10 games played since, he has no goals and three assists. His minutes have also been reduced.

All of these facts also make me think of how much of a mistake it was for Dean Lombardi to think of the short term when he dealt for a UFA rental with one year remaining on his contract. It was unlike what the previous deals he made when he brought in rentals like Gaborik and Regehr then re-signed them after they made an impact in a playoff run. He went all in on a player who is slowly diminishing.

Some Oilers fans are hopeful that he turns it on in the playoffs, but they sound just like most of us when we thought he'd provide the same impact in a playoff run. We never got that from him. Hey, maybe Dustin Brown will no longer be considered the worst contract in the NHL by next season!

The Kings actually had a great season last year but blew it at the end.

I was never an advocate of the Lucic trade but I see the reasoning.

DL always coveted Lucic too.

But no way in heck should he be paid so much. Anyone with a brain could see that He wouldn't be a King longer than a year.

I'm thankful for 12-14 but DL hasn't been the shrewdest since raising the second cup.

I think that will just be how it is in a cap world. Eventually, stars get paid. No room for error.

Teams will have to think, do I sign That Kopi Deal or trade him for a a big haul retool.

1: Lucic was productive for the Kings anywhere in the top6 he was placed.

2: Voynov was supposed to come back last year.

3: Playoffs sucked balls because both Martinez and Voynov were out and Doughty was the only puck mover.

Lucic is a big body that goes to the front of the net. He was perfect for the Kings grind it out game. While not the best skater/puck handler in the world, he's still a big guy with a shot that can beat a goalie and can make a pass in the offensive zone.

If he continues to struggle on the Oilers, Dean should see if he can pick Lucic up on the cheap. :naughty:

Besides... Ladd is the worst contract in the league.

Edit: Taking a gamble last year was fine, because who knows the next time the team is going to be in a position to go for it all again. Didn't work out, but it could be 10+ years... took 40 the first time.

Edit: I'd say Lucic is better at going to the front of the net then Pearson. Pearson's pretty good at it, but is about the only King that does it regularly.

Would also like to add, I really wanted to die of laughter when Lucic lost a step and everyone freaked out about the contract. Guess I'll just have to make due with Kopitar.

Lucic is third on the team in points.

That said, it will end up being a terrible contract. Dumb signing.

How much did he pay? Jones had zero value for the Kings. He wasn't signing here with Quick as the #1, and they couldn't have matched an offer sheet of say the $3m he ended up signing for with the Sharks, so they would've gotten one 2nd round pick as compensation.

Miller was a prospect, and would probably be playing for the Kings right now, but with the expansion draft coming up, he'd be another defenseman that needs protecting. He's got 6 points this year though, and Gilbert has 5. He's not playing top 4 minutes in Boston, so how much better would the Kings be if he was here?

The player that a lot of people wanted the Kings to take with the pick has 1 goal this year, and he's currently in the AHL. It's not the guy Boston picked, but none of the guys Boston picked have played yet.

As of right now, and this can change as the future unfolds, it was sort of a nothing deal all around. The team that came out of it the best up to this point was SJ, which would've happened anyway if the Kings didn't trade Jones and SJ just signed him to an offer sheet. The Bruins are still maybe in/maybe out of the playoffs, where they were before the trade, and spent the savings from Lucic on Backes. The Kings are still maybe in/maybe out of the playoffs, where they were before the trade, and have 1 playoff win to show from the deal.

Talking contract not assets. Lucic at 7m is a bad contract.

Not sure if he had control over Jones ending up in San Jose but I guess he tried at least to send him east.

That first could be Konecny or Barzal.

That first was a big deal for a team needing solid entry level contracts going forward.

Boston didn't need Jones either. But, they're in the other conference, so as the Sharks it's easier to send them your pick. They could just wait the Kings out if needed, because Jones was not signing with the Kings.

My guess, and it's only a guess, is Jones got the Kings more cap retention by the Bruins, because they knew they were going to trade him after they got him. They retain 50%, and get a 1st from SJ out of it. Good deal for Boston.

That's true. I think the pick that ended up going to Carolina in 2016 played a role in Lombardi going for Lucic. The Kings already showed they could manage to miss the playoffs one year. Because they did, the pick the Canes got for Sekera turned into a 2016 pick instead of 2015(guarding against that pick turning into McDavid), and I'm sure Lombardi didn't want that pick turning into Matthews. The only way he could control that was to try and make the team good enough to get back to the playoffs.

I think what we saw Lombardi do last summer, would've happened in 2014, or 2015, had those seasons not gone the way they did.

The same issues we had with Lucic, Oilers fans have to deal with now. Boston got out early, which worked out for them. What worked in Boston's favor, to make the choice easier, they had a new GM, and they didn't miss the playoffs as defending champs. Had more of a clean slate.

I still like the trade. Lucic got offered a stupid deal that DL was willing/able to match. I would rather have a GM swing for the fences when the team has the chance at a cup then sit back.

As for worst contract, the way Brown has been playing I don't even know if his deal is the worst on the kings.

it was rumored San Jose was going to offer sheet jones to a deal LA could not match and would not give LA even one first.

Plus remember Boston retained salary on Lucic, something LA needed very desperately (remember this was pre-Richards issues being settled)

Same story as last season with Lucic. He started off hot for the Kings, slumped in the middle of the season, and then finished off well. He's still on pace for 18 goals and 49 points. A 2 goal game somewhere and he's back on pace for 20 goals, 50 points which is pretty much his averages.

I'm 100% convinced Dean was banking on Voynov being in the starting lineup for the Kings in 2015-16. There's absolutely no way he trades McKeown (righty) and Miller (righty) all within 6 months if he does't think he's getting Voynov back. LaDue wasn't signed at the time either so no one knew if he was going to be Kings property. Makes no sense to trade two right handed puck moving d-men if he didn't think Voynov wasn't going to be back.

If Lombardi was 100% sure that Voynov was coming back I sure hope he didn't know the details of the case.

Well, I'dd add my .02: if Voynov was American or Canadian, he would be back on the Kings, right now.

He would have done a bit more time, then been released (like what happens to 90% of others charged with spousal abuse for the first time)

But by being Russian, it was easy for the gov to just kick him out of the country and say "we've done good work here." :shakehead

Had to say, I men Ray Rice never found a home right?

The whole thing about Lucic is why did they sign him when they already had Maroon? If they (EDM) thought Maroon wasn't tough enough or they didn't want him fighting and scoring, they also did re-sign Kassian.

I just don't get it. Kassian and Maroon are def enough in the line-up. We can beat the Taylor Hall for Larsson deal to death, but the Lucic signing seems weird with Maroon killing it and making a lot less coin.

I don't want to get into the fighting debate but as a fan of fighting and tough guys, I read about 100 articles on Boogard and his death and one thing that gets overshadowed is that his own brother was giving him opiates.

http://www.twincities.com/2011/07/2...-drug-felony-interfering-with-scene-of-death/

So we can argue fighting and the consequences but a major issue was the ease at which Boogard was able to obtain pain killers from all the teams he played for and even from his own family. They were all enabling him.
