The current system is a thing of beauty from a marketing perspective. The bottom feeders in both conferences are 4-5 points out of the playoffs so it looks like it's quite possible they can still make it. The only problem is that with the loser point it gets really hard to make ground up in the standings. The standings are closer together giving the appearance of more competition for those playoff spots... more teams in the hunt longer means more revenue! This will never change.

I was asking myself the same thing. Versteeg didn't look lost and timid in his brief period of time here. Purcell on the other hand makes Matt Frattin look like Adam Deadmarsh.

No doubt. I'd still like to see if Purcell can play with Kopi/Gabby. Be a pretty soft line tho.

So why did LA choose Purcell over Versteeg?

Look out, Calgary is heating up.

Wasn't Versteeg going to play in Europe, but couldn't get his hip insured over there so he had to come back to the NHL. This didn't happen until late so the Kings probably went with Purcell because he was available at the time.

I feel like there has to be something up behind the scenes with Versteeg. So many teams continually pass on him despite him not really having a bad stop anywhere.

He's always been an inconsistent performer, but who knows if he was asking for more money at the start of free agency versus when training camps started and he took a tryout.

If Purcell wasn't going to be inserted into a top six role, then his signing really was a pointless addition to the roster. He's not suited to play a bottom six role, that's just not his game.

Well, i can imagine he would have looked good on the 'new' third line with offensive abilities since depth scoring is a big deal (aka top 9 is still ok for a guy like Versteeg) but yeah inconsistency has been teh story of his career. Nevertheless, 'worse' players get signed

**NHL RUMOR**
Kings/Leafs/Jets/Wild all calling Islanders about availability of Travis Hamonic
Snow could start taking offers before #Xmas

Snow's looking for scoring and is shopping for forwards, yesterday the rumor was Harmonic for landeskog. Landeskog and Duschene are out there from what was reported. Avs failing yet again and looking to shake it up. I'm a Landeskog fan and wouldn't move him. I think he's a good young forward who'd be a good fit on almost any team.

Also a rumor that the Isles new owners are looking to make bring in a 'big name' for the front office. I wonder since Tallon got booted from the GM role he liked (and was good at) he'd be interested.
Snow isn't what they want either he'll be replaced on someone brought in to over him.

if i was islander owner my first move there would be clearing house in management. I don't like anyone there.

I thought Purcell received a decent shot at the top six, He was tried with Kopitar.

He doesn't have anything left, he can't play at today's NHL pace.

i dunno if i would say that he played 12 games getting around 12 -14 mins a game I dunno if that is enough for a top 6 winger to be classified as a shot or not :help: Some player take a while to fit in Let's not forget he was hurt for a 3 week period I do agree he didn't fit in thou

Mike Smith was outstanding tonight in a 3-2 shooutout loss to the Bluejackets

He took 58 shots on goal....unreal. And he was pretty pissed off in post game comments, as well he should be.
He deserved a lot better effort in front of him.

ANd the only feed center ice had was the Coyotes feed and I kept thinking , what game are they looking at? Praising the effort by the Coyotes...really? You spend the whole game in your own end with your goalie playing Hercules...that's nothing to cite as a fine effort.

Williams - 1G, 3Pts at ES in 23 games. Only 4 total points for the year. Worse sh% than Kopitar. Which is tough to do, since Kopitar is 268th out of 302 forwards that have played in at least 19 games this season. At least Getzlaf is down in the muck with Kopitar too. He's 267th.

Ducks are getting smoked by the Flames 6-1. Bernier 6 goals on 20 shots. The Chad Johnson reclamation project continues to work. He's now their #1 while paying Elliott millions as the back up.

edit: Calgary converts the extra point and makes it 7-1.

You don't trade Landeskog or Duschene, you build around them.

But I guess weirder trades have happened... ::cough:: Subban for a Weber swap. I mean who the hell predicted that!?

Great the Flames found another cup of voodoo.

that's not a cup of voodoo, they (and not the only team_) got off to a slow start , they are stabilizing. Losing Johnny Hockey for ten games hurt them and Monahan was on of a few players struggling early on.
They and the Oilers changed the complexion of the Pacific and are both threats for a playoff spot .
