No, I'm not joking at all. Let me know how you think the Kings match up against the Oilers over the next five years or so.

The Oilers have the foundation. Any pieces they are missing can be acquired with the expendable assets they already have on hand.

Not great, but that's irrelevant. You are glossing over the fact that they had to be awful for a decade and win a lottery something like 4 times to get what they have now. Model franchise, amirite?

That's 4 number 1 overall, 1 3rd overall, 1 4th overall and 1 7th overall. That's their last 7 drafts for just the 1st round. That's just ridiculous.

Winning the draft lottery 4 times in the span of 5 years will always be suspicious to me.

3 goals in under 4 mins to tie a game had never been done.

Hopefully they lose Wednesday and it becomes a footnote.

 Agent Mike Liut cited heavy schedule (WC, World Cup, 82-game condensed schedule) as another reason for Tarasenko not playing at Worlds (1/2)

Liut: "These guys have played a ton of hockey over last 14 months. This year's WC are a stretch for anyone who made it to the 2nd round."

He's right. Some of these guys were in WC training camp and will have way too short an off season.

IIHF's René Fasel in Paris Tues. I'm told there isn't more that can be done to sway NHL owners to change view on 2018 Olympics. Too late.

HOckey players...warriors all.

Anyone that questions Steen's heart & determination, he played entire playoffs w/a broken foot. What he went thru to play was excruciating

I'm not saying the Oilers were a model franchise at all. Lowe and MacTavish were complete and utter failures.
What I am saying is it doesn't matter how the Oilers arrived where they are today, they are here, and will be a very tough team to get past in the Pacific Division playoffs for many years. They have a decent GM now in Chiarelli. He was able to assemble a championship team in Boston. He knows what pieces he is missing, and he has extra assets to use in acquiring what the Oilers need to contend.

Let's remember the Kings tanked plenty to get where they ended up in 2012 with the #4, #2, and #5 overall picks. They were also drafting high in the 2nd round, along with extra picks for several seasons.

So if you are looking realistically at this situation, and you are Rob Blake what moves SHOULD you be making? My concern is the BS flowing from Robitaille, and it has already started, will be the Kings only need to change their style and acquire faster, more offensively talented players, and the Kings are contenders.

I think you and I both know that isn't true. Meanwhile the few assets the Kings possess which do have value will be declining while we are waiting for Luc to get fired.

He's right. Some of these guys were in WC training camp and will have way too short an off season.

Brian Burke was shown on Sportsnet Bob McCown show and Bob asked him about injuries and ways to improve the game. Most of the GM's agreed that if the season was shorted by 12 games that the games would improve in quality and injuries would be significantly less. Looks like by the time the playoffs even begin most players are just so banged up that when the intensity goes to playoff mode, players just crumble for the most part.

Bob gave the suggestion to go 4 on 4 to lower injuries since d-men wouldn't take the chance to run players or expose themselves as much to make a big play. Great idea to me, but the union would never allow that. Really too bad because that extra space would make a fun new way to watch the game and less injuries to players.

72 game regular season would be about right.

Player every team home and home, and that is 60 games. Then the teams in your division you play an extra two times for a total of four games.

Keep it 5-on-5 and 82 games.

It's supposed to be hard to win the Cup. That's the whole point.

Were the Kings even in the playoffs at game 70 in 2012?

I don't think anyone gets hurt in the playoffs because they already played 82 games. Sucks when a guy gets hurt in Game 75 before the playoffs start but that would just turn into it being a bummer at Game 65 of 70 instead. Nobody gets slashed in Game 1 of the playoffs and is like, "Man, if I had 12 less slashes on that wrist from the season, my wrist wouldn't of broken".

Only way you shorten the regular season is by expanding the playoffs. You don't just slice games but instead move towards more "important" games.

Seeds #8 and 9 in both conferences do a "play-in" series--Best of 3--to see who plays the #1. You get more "playoff atmosphere", you get two more fan bases in the #9 seeds to be involved and you reward the #1 seed in each conference by delivering them a team that just had to play at least two additional games--in a short time--before the series starts.

I'd be on board with that. The tough sell will be the owners losing that revenue.

That's a long way from 4 #1 picks in 5 years and missing the playoffs for an entire decade.

And regardless of what the younger teams are doing right now, the answer isn't "throw up your hands and give up and tank." I think that's what posters are trying to communicate to you. Again, 25 teams can't and shouldn't tank every year just because they don't have McJesus/Crosby.

Some teams like the Leafs are up and comers. Florida is another team that should be trying to improve. I guess it depends on your perspective. If you're satisfied being an also ran for years, the approach the Kings will be taking is fine.

When a team is in the position the Kings are in (aging core players with little hope of being better than other core players in their own division), it's time to maximize your assets and start building again. Maybe Doughty will force their hand by leaving. We should know within a couple of months after July 1, 2018. If Doughty hasn't signed with the Kings by then, he should be traded.

Looks like Backstrom took some lessons from Jarret Stoll, perfect shot right in the crook of the glove-hand arm.

What's with these teams not even bothering to show up in a clinching game? Anaheim last night and Pittsburgh tonight. Pathetic effort.

Pretty surprised after crashing head first into the boards, Crosby wasn't taken into the quite room, especially having just returned from a concussion. Did the spotters miss this?

I think Washington is going to beat Pitt. Trotz tweaked his lines, and it's working.

I am thinking Nashville vs WSH cup final. Nashville wins it all.

Feel the same way. Nashville is better than both the Ducks and Oilers. They don't have to rely on one guy to carry the team.
