That's how I remember it. They were still a heavy, heavy favorite in 2012--president's trophy IIRC?

Have the ducks won a game without a controversial goal call? Genuinely can't remember. You make your own luck but it's hard to go against the team that's getting every bounce. Always have a real "team of destiny" feel in that regard.

Yeah, I see Talbot getting interfered with quite a bit tomorrow night. The officiating has been terrible all around this post-season.

I have no idea how you guys put up with this vile scum of a team for so long these past 12 years in the Getzlaf-Perry era. If the Calgary Flames played like these guys game in/out for a decade, I'd probably have to take a break from hockey altogether.

I have to admit I never liked PK Suban when he was in Montreal.

I enjoy watching him much more as a member of the Predators. Very dynamic player. Maybe with the new approach we will see more flair in Doughty's game.

Suban does actually get his shot on net without getting it blocked though. Maybe if Doughty has more freedom to go down low to at least the top of the circle. Notice a play the other night where the Preds scored a goal and both defensemen were at the hash marks. It's great when it works, but if the shot misses the net a rims hard around, it's how 3-on-1 rushes for the opposition happen.
No when the D pinch usually the center covers the point and weak side wing flairs back to avoid the breakaway. That was NSH problem earlier in the year, the forwards weren't rotating to cover the pinch and the D weren't always being smart and pinching when their forwards could read the play and rotate back to cover the point.

It only got worse when they added Kesler and Bieksa. Thankfully for the most part we've only seen them 4-5 times a year during the regular season. Got that sweet 7 game series win against them in 2014 though.

I like hating them.

Could be, but they did come out like gang busters in the 2012 regular season, and they had made it to the cup final against Boston.

The Sedins got paid like the real deal when in reality they were fine complementary pieces which every championship team needs.

that is the difference, IMO, for a lot of teams. Playoff pressure a whole different animal. They never adjusted.
Sedins- were awful in the 2011 playoffs, lazy esp in the finals.

I think Lombardi and Hextall make a good team. Dean spent some time in the Flyers organization reassessing his performance after he was fired in San Jose.

Seems like something he might want to do again, but I wouldn't be shocked if he became Buffalo's GM.

(Per Elliotte Friedman) Jason Botterill (Pens Ass't GM) They're waiting for the Pens series to wrap up.
He's the only one who got a 2nd interview (which is a Pegula trademark)
Also a rumor that Tocchet is being eyed as a coach, due to his favorable style as a player's coach and apparently, brought out the leader in Crosby since he's been on the coaching staff in Pitts. Eichel is a player who needs 'managing' by some rumors.
But that decision won't come until summer.
Always liked him and think he'd be a good coach.

I've always been a big advocate for Tocchet as well. After Terry Murray was let go that he was a name I would have liked to see take over the bench (after Sutter).

Wow...

Amazingly, there would still be eight years left on Ilya Kovalchuk's terminated NHL deal with NJ: $10M, $7M, $4M, $1M, $1M, $1M, $3M, $4M.

Every team's forwards are supposed to cover when the defenseman pinches. Rarely do you see two defensemen at the hash marks, and even if the forwards cover the points, if the puck gets turned over you have a forward trying to play defense. It's a risky proposition.

Didn't Lombardi offer 10 years 70 million?

Kings offered 15 years, and $80M.

I believe Dean sabotaged the Kovalchuk negotiation with some of the questions he asked during Kovalchuk's interview even though he says he pushed the envelope in going after Kovalchuk.

Leiweke was the driving force behind the Kings pursuit of Kovalchuk.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/spo...an-lombardi-kings-nhl-hockey-free-agency.html

It was yet another pursuit that didn't end with the Kings getting the top-tier free agent they wanted.

"Obviously it’s been a grueling process but I think what we put out there was certainly respectable and pushed the envelope as far as meeting all those interests. If you go beyond that, you will pay someday in terms of this whole thing," Lombardi said, referring to his insistence on retaining cap space to keep core players and make some additions.

"With a cap everything has to fit. And particularly if you’re talking about a deal of this length. It’s got to work from all quarters. And that’s it. In the end your job is to put your best offer out there and if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. If you just compete with other offers you’re going to get yourself in trouble."

Dean should have read these quotes before he negotiated the Brown, Gaborik, and Kopitar deals.

15 years, lmao. Absurd.

No one expected him to play more than 10 years. You can tell by the contract. Years 11, 12, and 13 his salary was going to be $1M.

Kovalchuk was going to get around $80M in the first 9 years of the New Jersey contract. The Kings weren't even in the ballpark.

Still absolutely absurd. It'd be like getting a 75 year mortgage where the final 25 years are $200 payments. Absurd!
