I was thinking more in terms of what Vegas might do with guys like Perron and Neal. I could see them letting both walk, or trade them at the draft. They only have a handful of players making over $5M in cap hit, but have some RFAs due some pretty good raises. It will be interesting to see how they navigate this situation.
Oh oops, just read through this page really quick and thought you were talking about San Jose. Karlsson is a RFA for them so he might hold out for a huge raise. They do have Grabovski's useless $5 million cap hit coming off. Clarkson they'll put on LTIR again. Sbisa's $3.6 million cap hit and Stoner's $3.25 million cap hit also expire. They'll have loads and loads of cap space to play with. They'll definitely be going after John Tavares and/or Erik Karlsson.

Maybe the days of the top heavy roster are at an end?

Not in the slightest.

1. VGK hasn't won yet, and as we've discussed at length, their roster isn't reproduceable by any current team.

2. Every single one of the remaining teams off the top of my head has a 'top-heavy' roster meaning stars that have been paid or WILL get paid, and all of the recent champs are the same way, but you need DEPTH to go all the way, and it's rare to have depth if you don't have cream too.

Well, they definitely already tried for EK!

No matter how the Vegas story end, it will be interesting to see how they do next season. That chip on their shoulder/mistfits of the nhl/nobody wanted us attitude dies the day training camp starts.

Unless they don't bring back Neal or Perron, I don't think they can afford Tavares at close to $10M, i'm assuming W. Karlsson gets $7M, Neal & Perron get $5M (that's probably conservative), Miller & Theodore get a total of $7M. This with an $80M cap and knowing Clarkson will go on LTIR, and we don't even know if Foley is going to be a spend to the cap owner, they really only spent $57M this season. (we should assume he will be, given what they spent for the franchise, but you never know)

Neal will get more than 5M, closer to 7M, and I hope to god they give Karlsson 7-8M on a long range deal, the kid is good, but he had an absolute career year, 23.4% shooting percentage isn't the norm, he will come back down to earth...

You have to think he will try to get every dollar he can, this could be his Brady Anderson year (baseball reference).

Yep, if I were him, I'd cash in, 7-8 year deal, If I am Vegas, I go higher, but 4-5 years, go for a higher cap it, for less term....

In the event that someone gives him an offer sheet, it might be in his best interest to take it, just to make them match, doesn't matter who, as long as it's over his desired number.

Other than Stamkos and Hedman, I don't see a lot of overpaid "cream" on the Tampa Bay roster. Not sure why you count the rosters of teams with players who WILL get paid as top heavy. Based on their history and what they could have received on the open market, one could say Stamkos and Hedman gave Yzerman a discount.

Everyone is getting compensated fairly, but not over compensated. Sure like every team they will have some issues to address in a couple of seasons, but Kucherov will still be an RFA at that point in time. They may be wise to move out one of Johnson or Palat and look for a replacement on an ELC. Tampa is on pretty solid footing for at least two seasons after this one. Yzerman has done a pretty good job.

Would it be better to say that they are leaning towards top heavy at this point then? If they move out Johnson or Palat, wouldn't that just reinforce them leaning that way?

Really? That would be quite cool having ek in the div going hammer and tong with doughty.

This is from Friedman:

On Karlsson, my sense is the Vegas trade fell apart because of how the purchase price would be adjusted by Bobby Ryan’s inclusion. I’m not 100 percent sure if it was Ottawa’s ask or Vegas’ offer, but one of the rumblings is that the teams were talking two first-rounders, a high-level prospect and a conditional pick for Karlsson — the condition being whether or not the Golden Knights re-signed him. Whatever the case, it didn’t happen and I can’t imagine Vegas would have been willing to do all that if they were taking Ryan’s contract, too.

Wanted Vegas to lose but it is nice that San Jose lost at home in front of its fans and Vegas fans haven't been able to witness a series win in person so far. That is the only solace I can take.

I'm all in for Winnipeg if that is the match up. I can get why SR10 is on board since he is in Vegas, but there is zero reason to get behind them if you have no connection to the city other than throwing up on its sidewalks in your 20s.

The people of Winnipeg are hockey crazy and unfairly had their team ripped away from them so the league could start a 20+ year mess in the desert. They had not seen a playoff series win since the 80s, I believe, while these Vegas fans are in the WCF without any prior suffering.

C'mon now. This isn't a case of "hockey elitism" but rather the fact that the Jets fanbase is easily one of the more tortured in the NHL. As Kings fans, I think we can all relate prior to 2012. The fact that Winnipeg is not a big rival while Vegas is becoming/or has become one makes this an easy slam dunk choice.

I work in a Race & Sports book, i've been exposed to it non-stop since October, so yea, i'm salty.

I get it. Any successful team brings in a lot of casual fans. I just hate the “you don’t know anything about hockey!” mindset. That’s what Montreal and Toronto fans used to say about the Kings fanbase in the 80s.
