Most valuable to a team is just almost impossible to define. If the best player on a team gets hurt in pre-season, misses the entire year, and the team was supposed to be good, but they finish 4th worst, why wouldn't that guy win the MVP?
Kopitar had to do it without Carter, but if Carter had been healthy, he might have 70+ points. Kopitar didn't do it by himself. Quick is better than what the Flyers have thrown out there in net. Doughty is better than who the Flyers have. Giroux put up career numbers in every category with Simmonds having lower numbers in every category.
Even when Gretzky was winning every year in Edmonton, was he truly the most valuable to his team? What did they have, 7 HoF players? 8? Something like that.
