Devils clinch first playoff birth in 6 years and Taylor Hall will finally get to play in the post season after over 500 regular season games without a trip to the SC playoffs.

Kinkaid has been solid for them between the pipes.

Love his game and can't wait to see him in the playoffs.

Devils are really playing well right now.

Won't get that far though. Flyers and Panthers are tied in ROW. But Panthers need to win both their games and the flyers lose their last game to tie in points. That would give the ROW edge to the Panthers.

Am I missing something? I suppose the panthers could win their last 2 in shootouts.

If the Panthers win bother of their games in SO and Flyers lose by 2, they play the game.

What does Hedman have on Doughty?

Hedman has good advanced stats, but they have almost the same amount of points (Hedman with one more, while being on an infinitely better offensive team), but Doughty is the #1 D man on the #1 defensive team in the NHL with the #1 PK? To me, he is the literal best Defensive D man in the league, and has been for years.

I don't see how Hedman is any better defensively, is clearly at best equivalent offensively, and the advanced stats stuff I grant, but thats about it. Is it a new flavor of the month kind of thing? Are east coasters embarrassed to admit Doughty it really, really good? I can see an argument for Karlsson, who usually outscores his problems, but Hedman does not produce at nearly the same level.

Edit: LOL NEVERMIND, HEDMAN'S ADVANCED STATS ARE THE SAME AS DOUGHTY WITH LOWER REL%. WHAT DOES HF SEE IN THIS GUY???

Part of it is he's Swedish, and not Doughty, so Swedes and Ottawa fans especially have latched onto him. It's more a "not Doughty" vote than a Hedman vote for a lot of people. Plus, top eastern conference team, so everyone sees him.

But part of what you say for Drew applies to Hedman, it's at least really really close. Hedman is the #1 d-man on a Cup favorite team. He is getting softer minutes though, especially with McDonagh there now, but he's had a magnificent year. Maybe I feel different if I watch 82 games of Hedman instead of Doughty, I've only caught a handful, but on paper they're close. By the eye test, Drew has to do so much more for LA it's insane, but I don't think that's fair to hold against Hedman either, you can only play the minutes you're given and he's crushed those.

I think Drew's been better enough to say that he'd be my choice, but I don't think you can go wrong either way, but I think the enormous contingent of eastern voters will vault Hedman up. That's what the midway votes showed by a significant margin and I'm not sure much has changed, both guys went the distance with great seasons while other guys surged and fell. At least ballots will be public this year so we know who to ridicule for the Kronwall #1 vote :P

Here's a post I made on Doughty in the Norris Main Boards Thread:
"Per Corsica:

Hedman: 75 Games, 61 Points, CF% 52.49, CFRel .65, GF% 59.66, GF%Rel 3.93, xGF% 53.48, xGF%Rel .66, ZoneStart 54.22

Doughty: 81 Games, 60 Points, CF% 52.47, CFRel 4.36, GF% 55.12, GF% Rel 3.14, xGF% 51.34, xGF%Rel 5.47, ZoneStart 48.61

In my mind, Doughty does everything Hedman does except on an exceptionally worse performing team, with tougher deployment. This is shown by the comparable raw stats, but Doughty's superior Relative stats, along with the much higher TOI (By the end of the Season, Doughty should have the most in the league I believe) and harder zone starts. This is all still considering that Doughty is the #1 D-Man on the #1 Defensive team in the league (and #1 PK team), putting up the most minutes for that team by far.

The argument here is similar for the argument for Karlsson against Doughty for a few years; Karlsson puts up high relative numbers, carrying a substandard team on his shoulders.

Except the difference here is that, unlike Karlsson vs Doughty, Doughty's raw numbers are still almost the same as Hedman's, along with much much higher relative numbers.

I'll admit my bias, Doughty is my favorite player. I see Hedman's success of course. But it seems distinctly tied to his team, whereas Doughty seems to be performing almost equally, but carrying the load himself."

In short, I don't see it.

Hey, don't get me wrong, not arguing against you. Just trying to see their side.

In some ways yeah it's unfair Hedman missed some games with injury but you would think Doughty playing the most ice time in the league by a significant margin at that level would have more impact, i agree.

Yeah I'm not saying you disagree, just that I wanted to put the numbers out there. Hedman is a great D-man on a great team. Doughty is Great D-man on a bad team.

And we know what Doughty on a good team looks like, because we saw him put up even better defensive and better possession seasons before (IE, some of best defensive and possesion seasons in league history).

I don't know if I'd call a potential 100 point team that's 8th in the league in ROWs a "bad team," but to each his own...

In no universe is Hedman a better defenseman than Doughty. Tampa fans are drunk.

The only defenseman in the league who can hold Doughty’s jock is Karlsson.

Everyone else is a tier below.
