Calgary could have just gotten Gilbert for free off waivers. Why waste assets for Stone when he is marginally better than Gilbert.

Calgary could have just gotten Gilbert for free off waivers. Why waste assets for Stone when he is marginally better than Gilbert.

Because Stone is 8 years younger and a lot better.
It was a great move for them and only 500K plus in cap
space.

At 50% retained, Stone's $4,000,000 cap hit will only cost the #Flames $544,444 in cap space for the rest of the season.

Thoughts , rumors and such from around the league:\\

Per Lisa Dillman, NHL.com

https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-trade-...-with-anaheim-ducks/c-286967206?tid=278542340

Ducks- Fowler off the market

Oilers - Oilers are looking to be buyers at the deadline, need a center (faceoffs ), a right wing and a backup goalie

Pens- need a defenseman (Schultz and Maata both out)

Canes - with so many good young defenseman emerging in their system, they might trade Faulk for a center (which I've been hearing in other NHL areas, and Duchene is on their list)

&&&&&&&&&&&

Avs- still overpricing their goods, something that Sakic has to come down to earth on. NESN said the Bruins were very in on Landy but now have pulled back, due to the Avs being a bit unreasonable in their demands.

Negotiations with Avs going poorly. They want too much. Sakic needs to remember his team is terrible so not in a position of strength.

Improved Blues hesitant to move Shattenkirk?

Asking price is high end prospect, 1st round pick and another piece.
Blues hesitant now because of their improved play and his role in their post season.

What? The Dept of Player safety being inconsistent? I find that hard to believe...

Chris Johnston ‏@reporterchris 12m12 minutes ago

Blake Wheeler says #NHLJets are confused why the same standard wasn't applied to Evgeni Malkin's hit on him as it was to Trouba on Stone.

Avs are absolutely in a position of strength, I have to disagree with that report. There is no urgency--they don't have to do anything by the deadline. Some other teams may feel that crunch. He can lower his demands a little bit more in the offseason but he's right to ask for a pressure premium.

Brooks Laich on waivers

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie 40m40 minutes ago

BTW, Laich is NOT on unconditional waivers (which permits mutually agreed termination of contract). Regular waivers in this instance.

Leafs beat the Jets 5-4 in OT

Watching Laine and Matthews go head to head is fun. Laine has the sickest shot since Ovie. Laine gets 2 goals, Matthews 3 assists...

When the Ducks announcers say the Ducks were offsides and the goal shouldn't have counted you know Bruins fans are going to cry

Kings had 2 scouts at the Flyers Caps game last night and the Flyers had scouts at the Ontario Tucson game. Flyers are trying to unload some defense (Streit, Del Zotto) but the Kings don't need that. Streit is a good veteran d, a left handed shot that can play both sides very good on the pp but not great in his own end . I'm guessing Hexy would have to eat a part of the salary. Del Zotto is awful, it can't be him.

GM Ron Francis quietly doing a solid job, just like he did as a player.

The @NHLCanes now hold 10 picks in the 2017 @NHL Draft, including six in the first three rounds.

I think you will see 2017 2nd round draft picks getting moved frequently at this years deadline as currency considering it is a supposed 'weak' draft. I don't think GM's who are looking to add will be as hesitant to part with them.

Caps lost Niskanen lastnight. If it's a long term thing, it will be interesting to see what they do to address what would be a large hole in their defense corps.

Only the Flyers have made more picks over the past three drafts and no one currently holds more of 'em than they do this year.

Hawks with 90 picks over 10 yrs, that's pretty impressive.

SEan Monahan nets 100th NHL goal, 6th youngest player in NHL history at that mark. He could have nipped Kane, as he's been sitting at 99 for 20 days. But he did it in less games than Kane, for the mark, he's 5th alltime.

Love monahan, good center, smart, works his tail off on most shifts and loaded with leadership. Future bright for him.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Monahan -- at 22 years and 134 days -- became the sixth-youngest active NHL player to reach 100 goals. The five to do it quicker are Steven Stamkos, Sidney Crosby, Jaromir Jagr, Alex Ovechkin and Patrick Kane.

Shattenkirk turns down 7yr/42M LTC to Eastern Conf team reportedly the Bolts.

http://www.stltoday.com/sports/hock...cle_1d76ccd4-1ba2-5cc7-aaf6-267380da2c29.html
Discussions between the Blues and another club fell apart about six weeks ago on a trade that would have given Shattenkirk a seven-year, $42 million contract ($6 million AAV), as first reported by TSN’s Bob McKenzie. League sources have independently confirmed that Shattenkirk, who is 28 and a pending unrestricted free agent, turned down the offer.

The Blues are now believed to be shopping Shattenkirk as a “rental” player, according to those sources, meaning they don’t expect him to sign a long-term deal with another club before the NHL trade deadline Wednesday. An extension elsewhere would allow the Blues to maximize his trade value, whereas being dealt as a rental will not garner the team as much in return.

per Bobby Mac, this would be the 3rd trade that fell thru

http://www.tsn.ca/countdown-to-tradecentre-shattenkirk-bolts-trade-nixed-1.680116

The Blues have attempted to create a deal involing a long-term contract for Shattenkirk with a new team to maximize their return for the defenceman. However, McKenzie notes deals with the Edmonton Oilers (over the summer), and two other teams (one in November and one in the last month) fell through because Shattenkirk could not reach a contract agreement.

Saw most of the Leafs Rangers game last night, great game by both goalies, Rangers 2-1 in shootout. Andersen was great, deserved the extra point. The OT was insane, back to back end rushes, breakaways, fast and furious.
