Toffoli and Kopitar were the top 2 goal scorers last year, combing for 56 goals(with Sutter as the coach). They have 27 this year, which is a difference of 29. The team is on pace to score 197 goals, and scored 223 last year. The difference? 26 goals. Toffoli was clearly hurt, but he's been more of a 20 goal scorer than 30 goal guy at any point this year. Kopitar, who knows, but he's looking at a full season career low in goals, assists, and points.

Budaj did keep them in the race, but it was through an out of nowhere career season for a 34 year old. His best is basically Quick's average.

Of course injuries are part of it. You can't discount them. Sometimes teams can overcome those injuries, like when they lost both Regehr and Mitchell for the 2nd round in 2014. Sometimes teams can't for whatever reason. Sometimes teams have great health, like in the 2012 playoffs when the Kings had just 6 defenseman play every minute.

Then when all is said and done, if teams win despite injuries, the story is they battled through, or they dug deep. Something heroic and positive. If they lose, well, they had injuries, and you can't expect miracles. Story as old as time. If you win, you've done enough. If you lose, you never quite do enough.

I just want to let you know, man, that you are a hell of a poster. Thanks for putting in all the work you do in your posts, 7824. You're a gem, sir. One of the many of this board. :yo:

Scary moment tonight during the Flyers-Devils game. Neuvirth got the start because Mason was home sick. Anthony Stolarz was called to be backup, was on the road with the Phantoms on the way to Wilke Barre, PA, over 100 miles away. So he was still on his way to the arena when the game started.

a little over 7 min into the 1st period, with nobody near him, faceoff at center, Neuvirth collapses unconscious on the ice.

https://twitter.com/HockeyCentraI/status/848335281044553730

He was alert in the locker room afterwards and able to talk. He was taken to University of Penn hospital.

After the game resumed, the announcers said that the players on the bench were saying that Neuvirth was sick in the locker room before the game. But Stolarz hadn't arrived yet so he had to play.

Nothing yet on what went wrong. post game show , reporters saying players telling them they think Neuvy has the flu that is going thru the team.

As far as the game, Stolarz was solid again, turning away 26 shots in a 3-0 win. I hope he gets the start the rest of the way, he's their future and hopefully their backup next year. Been waiting for this since they signed him.

And Weal scored again, 4th straight game with a goal and 8 goals, 2 assists in last 16.

Must see video:

And this short video made my night. The peewee backup goalie, just look how
'happy' he is to be on the team. Priceless

That sucks, Dee, my prayers are with Neuvirth and his family. Hopefully it's just something like dehydration from the flu.

Thanks KT and that is what is sounds like. The cameras weren't on it initially, they were at center ice , the puck dropped, the whistle blew and the overhead camera showed him motionless. The first reply, he just collapses and my first thought was when Rich Peverly did that and it was his heart. So it was scary for a little while until the report of him being sick in the locker room ame out and then that Mason was out with the flu. Then after the game, the reporters saying the flu is going thru the room.

ANd props to Stolarz, being halfway across the state and having to drive back to play. And of course, they meant the house goalie was the backup, 23-year old Eric Semborski. His only experience is from Temple University and it 's the 2nd time this yr he's been the emergency backeup, IN dec, the Hawks were in town and Crawford got appendicitis. Because teams only carry two goaltenders on their roster, they are allowed to sign goaltenders to contracts on an emergency basis should the need arise, and that's what happened in Dec and again tonight.
And they tried to sneak him in with 24 seconds left to let him play, but the ref's wouldn't allow it, said it wasn't an emergency. But he got a great ovation from the fans when he skated back off the ice and down the tunnel.

Imagine that happening to you twice in a season, for 2 different NHL teams.

That is some scary stuff, for sure, Dee. Dang. Like I said, my prayers are with the young 29 year old.

A google search shows he was married recently, in 2014. Bless his family.

And now NSH has won against MIN, putting them at 91 points.

****.

Per nHL Network's On the Fly, Nashville has 12 players with at least 10 goals. The Kings have 7, but only 3 of our players (Carter, Pearson, Toffoli) have more than 12 goals.

I saw the video and recap. Scary moment for Neuvirth and team. Then Gudas got drilled, what, skating back to the bench? Weal scoring again, making his case each night to be re-signed. Phantoms goalie Stolarz arriving 5 minutes before puck drop. Devils finally scoring, only to get the goal called back because of offsides. That was an interesting game, from the sound of it.

Will Arizona be better next year with Keller and Strome?

Not sure:

Something is off with Arizona, they have problems all over their roster.

It's youth, I would chalk it up too. They make far too many mistakes at bad times.

Also they need much better prospects at Goalie.

With the Caps win in Columbus today it looks like the Pens and Bluejackets will meet in what should be the best match up of the 1st round.

A not great looking injury for Thornton.

Not that I want anyone to be hurt, and I say that as a post-30 male who knows injuries are even worse at this point, but the greatest thing in the world would be McDavid doing the turtle spin at center ice after eliminating the Sharks in OT in game 6.

McDavid knows he is going to be competing for cups. He isn't going to get excited and make an ass of himself celebrating like he won a cup in the 1st or 2nd round.

I get your point though.

Will Arizona be better next year with Keller and Strome?

More entertaining to watch for sure, but better would be a tall order. Albeit Matthews/Marner/Nylander are all doing better than I expected for Toronto. Maybe it's just me selfishly wanting to watch him play some AHL games, but I'm not 100% sure Keller will start the season in the NHL. Keller played LW at the WJC and he had been playing there for the Coyotes. Not sure if their plan is to have at center eventually in which case an AHL stint would provide a lower pressure environment.

Visited my friend in Tempe last year and caught the US U18 squad play Arizona State. Keller looked tiny out there. I was surprised to see him in the NHL 13 months later.

If Arizona figures it out LA could be in trouble again.

Who am I kidding. Their in trouble no matter what.

No Olympics. Fine by me.

Obviously, it's not over until it's over, but we'll see.

Pretty much expected this, I know the owners didn't want it and never got the impression Bettman would push for it. I did read a while ago the owner of the Caps saying he wouldn't stop OVie from going. Now I wonder what would happen if players wanted to go on their own?

He pretty much is expressing what the players feel.

Henrik Lundqvist‏Verified account @HLundqvist30

Disappointing news, @NHL won't be part of the Olympics 2018. A huge opportunity to market the game at the biggest stage is wasted..

But most of all, disappointing for all the players that can't be part of the most special adventure in sports.

Lundqvist thinks it's a good marketing opportunity and usually it is, but it's in South Korea. The games will be on in the middle of the night.

I also don't think the NHL liked the Socchi experience.

Have no problem with them not doing the Olympics anymore.

Make the WC every four years. NHL rules and ice size. Make that the tournament that really matters like it did in 1996 and when it was the Canada Cup.

The IOC wants to keep all the profits, the players fully expect to continue to be paid if they get hurt, and the NHL doesn't get much beyond no profits in some form and potentially injured players.
