In fairness to Lombardi and the scouts, Teubert was drafted right where many felt he would go. Goes to show you that size and a mean streak can trump talent in the mind of many teams. The mock draft for the 1st round that year alone had a bunch of busts.

I think the real issue with that pick is that the other guys drafted after him saw success when he didn't. Meyers since his rookie season has been injured or has regressed badly. Karlsson and Subban, as well as others have done quite well, but I don't fault what DL was doing drafting a mean defenseman at the time. That was the teams MO. We still got Doughty and Voynov, both who lead us to 2 cups.

Zykov scores his 1st NHL goal on a sweet play , boxed the Ranger out in the corner got the puck and himself to the net and a nice goal. Puts the Canes up 2-1
Also had a strong period and pp time.

Good for him, he's with a young team who will have some growing pains ove rthe next couple of years but if Francis gets a goalie and #1 center, could be a playoff team.

Zykov with a goal in his first game.

Congrats to Zykov, but he is no Yannick Lehoux, who scored on his first shift, in his first NHL game after being traded from the Kings.

:D

I'm just glad this kid got to play in his first NHL game and score his first goal, to boot. Good on him, so far from home.

Quality scouting, not enough forward prospects, not enough high picks.

Brutal goaltending there. Just saying.

Flames are on a roll, lead 4-0 against a Priceless Habs. Forget about catching them. Their only hope is St. Louis faltering.

..and Nasville. They have been poor lately. I still think they get in but this is a bad time of the year to start a losing streak, I believe they are winless in 4 or 5 with the OT losses lumped in there.

I miss ties.

The only way this team is catching anyone is if the other teams falter and help us out. Maybe it happens, but doubtful to me the way we've played for the last 2-3 months.

An article today about Justin Schultz, his 1.4M contract done this year and what his next one might look like , given his 45 pts this yr (4th in NHL) and how well he's played. They used Seth Jones (5.4 M per) as a example, given their Corsi, SCA60 and GA60 numbers are similar.

But that puts the Pens in a pickle, since they have 10 forwards, 3 d and 2 goalies signed and a bunch of contract to ink.
Also, if they protect Schultz, Maata and LeTang and 7 forwards , that will leave one of the younger d exposed. Go the 8 skaters route to protect another d and there are some pretty good forwards left out
Bonino has an expiring deal (1.9Per) and he's been pretty good for them. Trade or sign?
They are currently 4.5 M over the cap...

Oilers ...

Speculating that Draisaitl's 'bridge ' deal (if he agrees to one) would be in the neighborhood of Kucherov's (4.76) bridge deal and he could get close to 5M per. Remember when Bridge deals used to be reasonable?

Some tidbits from Friedman's 30 thoughts..

4. Although the GMs decided not to change the offside rule, they are looking at a couple of tweaks to the process. One thing that will take effect immediately is telling the officials to announce their replay decision and drop the puck. No discussing it with the coaches or the captains. If you talk to one, you must talk to both, and that slows things down. It will, however, drive the coaches absolutely crazy.

I like this idea, it wastes far too much time having conversations after the call to placate the coaches, players, tec.

7. Canucks radio analyst Dave Tomlinson had an interesting idea for increased scoring — let the offensive team, not the home team, have the last change for faceoffs in the O-zone.

I like that idea...

My lord, Schultz getting anything over 4 would be appalling. He's in the perfect situation--crazy offensive deployment. He's playing well, but he's as sheltered as can be honestly. Someone is going to be sorely disappointed again if he goes somewhere else at that price and gets used differently, and not a lot of other teams have the luxuries the Pens have.

I haven't seen the pens enough to know his coverages, but his Corsi is great 52% and he's a plus 28 (which is tied to the offense, granted but you still have to defend )
The few games I've seen, he's been good on both sides of the puck. Playing with a better team has bolstered his confidence maybe. Also, he's putting in time with LeTang out so much this year, so I think maybe his minutes might not have been as sheltered.

He likes it there and it suits him, I guess he'll sign if the $$ is right but the pens only have 15M for 6 roster spots, so that doesn't leave alot for the rest.

There's no doubt he's playing very well, but it's like the Schultz for Norris thread up on the main board, many are discounting why he's playing well. I'm sure there's a healthy dose of confidence there, and Pens fans are adamant he's played more demanding minutes when guys are out, which I can buy, but there's no way in hell you give essentially a specialist that kind of money. At a relative zone start ratio of 5.21, that tells you everything about how they feel about his defensive play (even Letang is 1.55). Corsi aside, his zone starts vs. zone finishes are wonky too, as even with that preferential deployment, he's negative when we talk about finishing shifts, while most other Pens end up in the positive. Makes his positive metrics look much less impressive--like Karlsson last year--when you give the guy every chance to put up shots and offensive numbers while hiding his defense and he STILL ends up on the wrong side of the ice frequently. Sounds like I hate him a whole lot more than I do, lol, just saying that's a lot of money to throw at a guy who you only want to put on one side of the ice and you can't essentially trust with top-pairing minutes. It's why I shudder when teams talk about giving Shattenkirk 7.

Can you imagine if we gave Drew Doughty 5 times the offensive starts as we did the defensive starts? No team has a shinguard budget that large! :sarcasm:

Dwight King is a -3 in 4 games. I like the guy but I always had a feeling if he went somewhere else he would not succeed. Sutter had his guys even going back to the Calgary days that seem to play well only for him.

Just hope they don't resign him as an UFA.

I hope Burns wins the Norris this year, the sobbing from the Karlsson Krowd is getting tedious again. Who gets to "rob" the historical generational superstar next year?

It that time of year Karlsson makes his annual push. Plays an average season, then the last 20 games he starts piling up points as teams start phoning it in.

God we're just one point out of the playoffs and we will be playing STL on Monday

you make it sound like it's the most daunting task

I like that at least one admits he hasn't seen much of Burns but still feels Karlsson is much better defensively and more deserving.

Boy do I love Ahlers and Hayward. At the second intermission they were bragging how Anaheim is the best in the league in the 3rd. Give up the fewest goals, invincible etc. -- 25 seconds in...
