Get better talent? WHat better talent? Schenn , Versteeg and a Vinnie, who was retiring? That's not better talent. It would be different if they were moved for a top end young player that wasn't short term, they weren't.
I understood Fasching, although it hurt, because DL really believed McNabb could be developed into a top 4 d. Miller, nope, that was an awful trade. Cernak, we'll see.

They were better for the time we needed them and we're not missing Miller nearly as much as you're imagining.

i think with Weal and Zykov they were more thinking we didn't have the luxury of time to wait for them to ripen while our window was still open rather than they flat-out did not like the prospects.

Obviously that may be changing a bit but I think you get my point.

Kings, heaviest team in the league at 210.5 lb. average. Weal, undersized. That marriage was never going to happen.

Zykov had the two injuries, the hernia and, what was it, a wrist injury? Those kept him out of commission for quite a while. Add to that he hadn't progressed as rapidly as mgm't. had hoped. Carolina obviously won that trade, getting two picks and letting a pending UFA go that they had no plans on re-signing and didn't need for a playoff push. Yeah, I think they liked Zykov but he had slipped down the prospect list somewhat. Curious that they thought they could let a forward and a pick walk when obviously drafting defensemen is first priority in their drafting strategy.

Zykov scores his 1st NHL goal on a sweet play , boxed the Ranger out in the corner got the puck and himself to the net and a nice goal. Puts the Canes up 2-1
Also had a strong period and pp time.

Good for him, he's with a young team who will have some growing pains ove rthe next couple of years but if Francis gets a goalie and #1 center, could be a playoff team.

At least we are left with memories of Kris Versteeg and the impact he left on this team. Like other impactful deadline acquisitions that we all fondly remember: Cliff Ronning, Anson Carter, Jeff Halpern... I'm sure Jarome Iginla will find his name on that memorable list in the near future.

Clearly that's what the disagreement has been about this whole time.

Must be why the organizations just oozing with so much talent that Dean has to move some for rentals.

How would you rank the Kings' prospect pool? It's been widely suggested by many to be considered among the weakest (if not the worst), in the league.

Granted, even if they kept guys like Weal or Vey, or go further back to Loktionov and even if they kept Zykov and Cernak, they would still be buried in the minors. And have any of them even cemented themselves as NHLers?

As shortsighted as Dean has been, the prospects moved haven't been missed, it's more of an issue of what he obtained for some of them that's the issue.

And the staff being displeased with their lack of progress is why these guys are moved. Or they're just not a good fit like it's already been suggested.

30 Thoughts

9. Pittsburgh took a long look at Jannik Hansen before he was traded to San Jose. That’s the second straight season the Penguins took a run at a Vancouver player, only to have it fall through. (Last year, it was Dan Hamhuis.) Los Angeles pursued Hansen as well, but it sounds like the Kings needed Vancouver to retain a little more salary and weren’t as willing to upgrade the draft pick conditions. If the Sharks win the Stanley Cup, the fourth-rounder for Hansen becomes a first.

So to follow... the Kings scouting staff can't find talent, as evidenced by their poor prospect pool, as evidenced by the prospects finding success on other teams who traded for them and saw them as valuable?

The Kings move them for rentals, because Lombardi has this apparent pathological belief that all he has to do is make the playoffs. So he trades less NHL ready prospects for more NHL ready players.

He paid premium prices to try to make the playoffs. That's why the organization is where it is. Not scouting.

What prospects that they dealt found success elsewhere? You're lumping Zykov in there already? That's like suggesting Pavel Rosa is top talent after his impressive two-goal game in his debut.

Lombardi admitted that he knew how to start from the bottom to build a team, but staying on top as a contender was a whole new experience for him. It's a lot harder to stay on top than it is to build from ground zero.

Why this year he was so adamant on keeping high draft picks/prospects and even trading a pending UFA in King for a draft pick to restock a bit. He got away from his philosophy a bit in trying to keep the Kings at the peak of the mountain and learned a lot past year. He said all this during his conference call after Iginla trade.

When I asked what Zykov would have to do to be considered successful, you had a smartass remark. Funny since it's a forward drafted in the second round... the one issue you were harping on relentlessly last week. He scores a goal his first game when he plays on the top line and you make a Pavel Rosa comparison.

Clearly you already have no response. And no future results will change your opinion because you already have your mind made up.

As for what other prospects, I've already spent a great deal of time writing about this before. You win. You have worn me out discussing the issues with you, because when one gets addressed, you jump to a different issue.

You and whomever agrees with you can keep talking about how the scouts suck, and refuse to admit that Lombardi may be the issue with the poor prospect cupboard.

In fairness to Lombardi and the scouts, Teubert was drafted right where many felt he would go. Goes to show you that size and a mean streak can trump talent in the mind of many teams. The mock draft for the 1st round that year alone had a bunch of busts.

I remember vividly how much the scouts raved about his interview. They fell for that hype like most scouts do when they think a dman with some size and/or snarl will be the next Chris Pronger.

That's why guys like Luke Schenn, Teubert, McIlrath, Ellerby, etc., wind up being selected so high. They buy into the hype of these physically overdeveloped dmen dominating against other smaller teenagers.

So, no list of all of the successful prospects Lombardi dealt? Like former first round selection Colten Teubert.

I've done enough work. RJ is right. All you do is spout ******** about how bad the scouting is and do nothing to back it up. You've yet to name a team who has scouted better since 2006 for us to point out how misinformed you are.

Then when people get tired of repeating the same stuff, you act smug like we don't know what we're talking about.

Screw this ****.

I've named teams who've scouted better, not my fault you choose to bury your head in the sand and ignore it. The Hawks, Ducks, Pens, Sharks, Habs, Blues, Canes, Caps have all had just as many NHL graduates. You're trying to put the Kings scouts on some pedestal while they're not doing any better than other teams in that regard.

I see you're frustrated because you can't list all of that top tier talent that Deano choked away. I'm miffed with what they obtained for those assets. Like with the trading of Grebeshkov and Tambellini for Parrish and Sopel.

It's not the trading of those players that was an issue, it was what they received for them. Nothing of value was lost in getting Carter or Gaborik, those are examples of great asset management. The moves thereafter, not so much.

Congrats to Zykov, but he is no Yannick Lehoux, who scored on his first shift, in his first NHL game after being traded from the Kings.
