How the Christ are people saying that's a good deal? That's a ****ing Dustin Brown special, paid for being loyal to the team. Honorable but that's a death knell in business terms. Ah well I'm sure they'll get the Swedish Patrick Kane on an ELC next year for their first line to make up for it

This is why im hoping winnipeg gets him. How great would that be. Matthews probably wouldnt be playing hockey today if jets 1.0 never leave winnipeg.

That would be cool. Then again it could really help Arizona you'd think having a home grown player.
But I don't really care as long as Edmonton doesn't get the number 1 pick. Actually I'd like them to pick 5th, that's as low as they can drop right now based off standings.

I love everything about this post, especially the "Swedish Kane" bit. **** the Blackhawks

Stars D is really banged up. They just lost Demers who led the D in TOI. Ruff is down to 5 D in the game tonight and they are all lefties. No right shots left woth Klingberg also out. Yikes.

I'd say 'poor stars' but that's what happens when your GM fails.

GET MORE OFFENSE

Edit: also has been amongst the 5 healthiest teams all year, hard to feel too bad

Stars, lol. They'll be the first playoff team to lose a series in 3 games.

Gonna burn down your village after the village idiot pots 6 goals.

Sens trying to protect a lead at the end of the game, EK hasn't been off the bench for more than a couple of minutes since the Sens took the lead late in the 2nd

Ahh was finally out at the end. Played 22 minutes until the Sens took the lead, played 5 minutes in the third period. Tough minutes

Edit: hahah boom, scored on at the buzzer, only Ott d-man to be -1 so far. I want to like the guy nad I've been watching so much of him this year but he's seriously hardly better than Marc-ANdre Bergeron in his own end. Trying soooo hard to not be critical

He's brutal defensively. Everyone can see it, except for 99% of Sens fans on these boards. A -18 now on the road. The coach can't play him against the bottom 2 lines all game on the road. Doughty? Yeah, a +14 on the road. I believe Doughty has 19 points in his last 19 games as well, or something to that degree.

Please don't badmouth the leader. He'll soon arrive in his spaceship and take us to planet Minustonia

It's just weird because they got Phaneuf which made Phaneuf and Ceci a good second pairing then EK's game started falling apart.

-14 corsi tonight at evens.

He LOOKS exhausted so I buy that, and I feel for him in the same way I felt for Doughty down the stretch last year, but you can't call the guy a Norris contender then.

Sens fans praising how he leads the league in minutes and how amazing he is da da da da. Well look at him now. Best thing for karlsson was to play less minutes not more. All them minutes catching up to him big time now a minus four on the season. If Drew hits 50 points this season I think it's his to lose. He's been the best this season in every aspect of the game. Can you imagine the main board blowing up if Drew won it.

at this point i'm kinda just sick of the awards in general

no one really knows what they're actually supposed to represent any more (except the obvious Art Ross etc.), and voting needs to be transparent so we can see who's horrible "expert" opinions we're supposed to be listening to

You know who is REALLY brutal defensively? Check out the turnover leader in the NHL with 104 - Subban! Also a Norris winner! The next closest is Doughty, with 24 fewer turnovers despite a much higher TOI. Karlsson is #3 with 25 fewer.

Whenever they decide to award the Norris to the best actual defenseman in the NHL, then Doughty will win it.

i don't get the fascination with what the media says in general. Yes, there's a lot of quality guys out there who produce good content, but there's also a lot of absolute crapsacks who somehow get paid for vomiting their awful and typically flawed opinion out into the world, and the voting process doesn't exactly distinguish between that.

Well, I care about the award partially for homerism, but I'm also really trying to understand, and the best I can get is simply east coast bias. Not because other d-men aren't close--it's a hell of a race this year--but it's almost turning out like Henrik's vezina over Quick where it's a razor margin but Henrik MURDERS him in votes.

Luckily, apparently canadian media is all over Doughty's jock, which is what's rubbing many of our friends up north the wrong way and they're responding by overreacting, but I can't see that being in california.

Jim Gordon (a host on XM NHL and my favorite NHL personality) is all OVER Doughty this year in particular. He's been very vocal about Doughty's greatness the last few years, but he's really ramped it up this season. I don't see him winning any individual award this year (except possibly the Conn Smythe), but he's definitely getting closer.

All I'll say is that it'll be a travesty if EK wins a third Norris before Doughty wins one.

I shouldn't have posted this, but I did.

Doughty's case this year (stats amongst d-men with 500 min or more):

G: 13 (8th)
A: 30 (15th)
P: 43 (10th)
+/-: 19 (4th)
TOI/G: 28:20 (3rd)
PPP: 22 (6th), LAK PP rank = T-4th
PPTOI/G: 3:10 (17th)
SHTOI/G: 3:00 (18th), LAK PK rank = 16th (admittedly, the PK has struggled lately)
CF%: 59.2% (1st)
CFrel%: 5.6% (8th, which I'd argue is impressive given LAK is 3% over the closest competition)
CF/60: 63.4 (4th), CF/60 rel team: 1.77 (54th)
CA/60: 43.8 (3rd), CA/60 rel team: -9.77 (4th)

The biggest problem with Doughty is metrics don't often accurately capture what he does. He's dynamic offensively, but doesn't rack up points--he's fantastic at controlling the puck and starting the breakout by just flat out getting the puck out, passing, or skating. He's amazing defensively, one of the best all-out shutdown d-men in the league (only guy I'd take over him in that regard is Vlasic, mayyybe Tanev)--but we have no metrics for goal prevention really. You've all seen the 'highlights' of his oddman break breakups (which have been coming fast and furious this year due to sub-par d-partners), but night in and night out the oppositions best players like to challenge him one on one and he just keeps locking them out.

his team impact (this is from...Mid-February when McNabb had been DD's regular partner, so not completely up to date):

And WOWY's with his partners this year:

There's a myth out there that Doughty is a passenger because Muzzin is a corsi god but now that they're apart it's clear that Muzzin was able to pull that off because he can generate CF like it's nobody's business--but it's Doughty that pumped his numbers up because he shot suppresses like a monster. Same in teh chart above--our depth forwards like Brown and Lewis generate massive amounts of shots, but with d-men other than doughty, they also give up more shots.

My two cents. I think everyone that goes lolDDisoverrated needs to watch him because stats don't paint what he does all around.

His is the absolute leader on a D-core that is significantly lacking depth this year. Muzzin is a great #2 but has been uneven, and Martinez has been playing as a #3 but his game falls apart after 20 minutes. McNabb is fantastic as a depth guy but was in WAY over his head with 1st pairing minutes, and the rest of the depth chart has been a rotating door of nightmare fuel. (that's probably mean to Schenn who has been servicable, he's Matt Greene in a different person, just miscast).

He's not flawless, but I think his defense gets shortsold, to be frank. And maybe the biggest "hole" in his game, as pointed out elsewhere, is raw 5v5 production--though with great possession and +/- even relative to his team, it's more to do with the Kings offense as a whole and less to do with Doughty.

Edit: ugh, need to blow those WOWYs up. Sorry.
