I shouldn't have posted this, but I did.
Doughty's case this year (stats amongst d-men with 500 min or more):
G: 13 (8th)
A: 30 (15th)
P: 43 (10th)
+/-: 19 (4th)
TOI/G: 28:20 (3rd)
PPP: 22 (6th), LAK PP rank = T-4th
PPTOI/G: 3:10 (17th)
SHTOI/G: 3:00 (18th), LAK PK rank = 16th (admittedly, the PK has struggled lately)
CF%: 59.2% (1st)
CFrel%: 5.6% (8th, which I'd argue is impressive given LAK is 3% over the closest competition)
CF/60: 63.4 (4th), CF/60 rel team: 1.77 (54th)
CA/60: 43.8 (3rd), CA/60 rel team: -9.77 (4th)
The biggest problem with Doughty is metrics don't often accurately capture what he does. He's dynamic offensively, but doesn't rack up points--he's fantastic at controlling the puck and starting the breakout by just flat out getting the puck out, passing, or skating. He's amazing defensively, one of the best all-out shutdown d-men in the league (only guy I'd take over him in that regard is Vlasic, mayyybe Tanev)--but we have no metrics for goal prevention really. You've all seen the 'highlights' of his oddman break breakups (which have been coming fast and furious this year due to sub-par d-partners), but night in and night out the oppositions best players like to challenge him one on one and he just keeps locking them out.
his team impact (this is from...Mid-February when McNabb had been DD's regular partner, so not completely up to date):
And WOWY's with his partners this year:
There's a myth out there that Doughty is a passenger because Muzzin is a corsi god but now that they're apart it's clear that Muzzin was able to pull that off because he can generate CF like it's nobody's business--but it's Doughty that pumped his numbers up because he shot suppresses like a monster. Same in teh chart above--our depth forwards like Brown and Lewis generate massive amounts of shots, but with d-men other than doughty, they also give up more shots.
My two cents. I think everyone that goes lolDDisoverrated needs to watch him because stats don't paint what he does all around.
His is the absolute leader on a D-core that is significantly lacking depth this year. Muzzin is a great #2 but has been uneven, and Martinez has been playing as a #3 but his game falls apart after 20 minutes. McNabb is fantastic as a depth guy but was in WAY over his head with 1st pairing minutes, and the rest of the depth chart has been a rotating door of nightmare fuel. (that's probably mean to Schenn who has been servicable, he's Matt Greene in a different person, just miscast).
He's not flawless, but I think his defense gets shortsold, to be frank. And maybe the biggest "hole" in his game, as pointed out elsewhere, is raw 5v5 production--though with great possession and +/- even relative to his team, it's more to do with the Kings offense as a whole and less to do with Doughty.
Edit: ugh, need to blow those WOWYs up. Sorry.
