Looking at the Stars summer, they've got 4 of their top 7 defensemen as UFA's. 4 of their top 5 most experienced defensemen. Of course all that money in those 2 goalies.
Always interesting how things play out. Dallas didn't have one of the most dangerous offensive players in the league, a questionable defense, and at best average goaltending. They beat Minnesota, without Parise or Vanek, whatever people may think of Vanek. It took St.Louis 7 games to beat Chicago, who had 3 defensemen. Then 7 games to beat Dallas, with no Seguin, and all the other questions outside of their remaining forwards.
Other than the Kings, the Rangers would be the other contender for worst looking team in this year's playoffs. Kuznetsov couldn't score against the Flyers at ES, or the Penguins at ES, so the Caps had 1 line. They lived by their PP against Philly(like the Kings did in 2010 against Vancouver), and didn't have enough depth scoring to keep from falling down 3-1 to Pittsburgh.
Are the Central teams really as imposing as they seem? By the time the playoffs rolled around, I'm not sure. The Caps ran away with the best record in the league, but only had one line scoring in the playoffs, and were led in playoff goals by TJ Oshie of all people. He finished with more goals in this playoff year than he had in his career coming into this playoff year.
Look at the Kings in 2014, and Vlasic went out for the Sharks. The Ducks can't win Game 7's at home. The Hawks had no 2nd center. The Rangers couldn't hold a lead.
It really is a war of attrition. Every team has a weakness somewhere. Just have to take advantage of the other team's misfortune, and the teams that do that most effectively, are the teams that win.
