That 3rd period magic Calgary lived off of last season just doesn't seem to be there, like their defense. -27 goal differential.:help:

Holy hell, all other things aside, Calgary is a MINUS 24.

Oh, and the next Karlsson has arrived, say hello to John Klingberg. Though I'd actually say he's already better in the d-zone than Karlsson.

Now a -27.

Projected over the course of a full season, that translates to -116.

Calgary's defense is a complete mess, the only bright spots in that pile of garbage is T.J. Brodie, Russell

Hamilton has been a complete bust, and Gio is playing average to below.

But I thought trajectories only went up? Calgary was so easy to call. All their metrics were garbage except they pulled out a crap load of 3rd period wins. Couple that with the fact they stunk in prior years and it had all the markings of a one year over achievement. You don't go from worst to first in this league and stay there without steady improvement. Calgary was a one year spike and now they're dropping down to reality. I expect that next season they'll improve, but below last season's output. Similar to Colorado after their monster year a few years back.

Calgary is just looking ugly. In all situations they have a PDO of 96.3 and 5 on 5 is even worse at 95.8. Consider 100 is average and the highest number last year was 101.9. So most teams are very close to that 100.

Can't say I called that one, thought they and the Kings would fight it out for 3rd.

Guessing you had Anaheim at 1, but who did you have at 2?
Before the start of the season I thought LA and Anaheim would be battling over #1 with Calgary and San Jose battling over #3.
I thought Vancouver would drop off.

I still believe that Tortorella doesn't belong in the NHL, but Columbus is 6-4 in their last 10 games, and 6-5 under him.

So whatever he's doing is working, at least in the short-term.

Torts first concern when he came on board was that he felt the players were losing (with or w/o the puck) the 1 on 1 battles. That was what he made them work on, in very grueling practices, and stressed. Win the 1 on 1 battles and play a full 60.
And that's made a difference, to me, that when you win those battles, you tend to control the play. You control the play, you get more offensive zone time and with the forwards they have, some prime scoring ops, also you keep your own front -porch cleaner.
37 goals allowed in first 8 games (roughly 4.6 per) and 25 in the last 10 (2.5 per) . Which is a huge improvement.
PP and PK improved, which helped

And the other thing he did was a baptism by fire with Bob and it worked, he got his confidence back and has been very solid
(.923 sv%) and a 2.42 GAA in that time, and his EV % is .928 which is what they needed. When the goalie is shaky and goes south, the confidence of the team generally goes with it.
That's the biggest leap for them, he's better so they are better, they have a long way to go, a tough hill to climb and a lot of improvement to work on, but they are back on track.

Surprise in that division is the Devils, in 3rd place and playing really well, guess Papa Lou departure and a good coach brought in a fresh air, a wind of change.
And Mike Cammeleri (18 pts , 17 games) has been really good, as part of a line with Stempniak and Henrique that has been very good, while 5 x 5 , combining for 45 pts in 17 games..
Also Kyle Palmiere (6 goals, 14 pts in 17 games ) been very good .

Brayden Schenn will be a healthy scratch. Appears that both Schenn bros are major busts.

Hasktol, like the coaches before him in the organization, including Murray, while B Schenn was there during the lockout, is having difficulty getting thru to him. During his rookie year, he and Lavvy butted heads and during one game , the guy between the benches had to turn his mic down because they were arguing that loud, Murray during the lockout, twice while Schenn was there was called into the Phantoms coaches office to have a 'talk ' about his inconsistent and poor play and his attitude, which is the same 'talks' Berube had with him .
Schenn was bad in camp, and Hasktol put him on the 5th line. Started off poorly, had a 'talk', played well a few games than during the last road trip reverted to his usual, low IQ, no instincts, turnover machine, lazy, etc. and was benched.
He'll play good for about 3 games and revert again. It's why Ron Hextall said over the summer after Couturier was given an LTC that he wasn't planning on signing B Schenn.

He remains , for the last 3 yrs., on the trading block. Brief flutter of false hope when the Matt Duchene trade rumors started that if he were traded, that would open a spot there, but the Avs aren't trading him, not sure why that rumor even got legs. They already lost ROR and Stasny.

Anyway, with White going down to injury, the lack of scoring (and frankly piss poor play by most forwards not named SCott Laughlin, who is one of hte few who has shown up for every shift,) and inconsistent play, Hasktol has been playing forward line roulette alot, and B Schenn was back (where he is an ill fit, lacks the IQ to be good ) on the 1st line LW in practice today. That usually lasts until the end of the 1st period, where his mistakes lead to odd man rushes, scoring chances and goals, and he's moved down where he belongs. It amazes me how many local reporters only look at the goals, that he's having a 'good 'year and only cite that (even the goals that bounced off body parts that he wasn't aware of) they completely miss that he's lacking in most areas of the game that every player needs to be good.

Can't wait for him to be gone, hopefully before Feb.

What happens when the penalties are over....do both teams get charged with too many men on the ice?

Maybe it was those two fighting it out for 1st round home ice 2nd & 3rd, whatever it was, I am dead wrong so far.

I didn't see this coming for Calgary either. Last year was unsustainable, but I thought that would be somewhat mitigated by a full season of Sam Bennett along with adding Dougie Hamilton without giving up anything off their roster.

agreed..not to mention Frolik.
I knew there would be some regression of their players do to so many career years, but I thought those additions would help offset.
Also I knew that they would not be able to come back as many times in the 3rd, but I thought they would not need to.
They have truly looked awful

Yeah I thought Calgary would take a step back this year before a big step forward next year, I didn't expect them to fall down a manhole...but then again, almost every significant player I can think of on that team had a career year last year, and not just from a points perspective, but a play perspective...Wideman, Giordano, Russell were all practically infallible, even Engelland looked good (albeit mostly because of Brodie). No one in their right mind could have thought Hudler would do what he did, and that's all before taking into account the third period and OT magic...

I mean, nearly any time I hear a team has found a way to 'game' advanced stats with "oh we just have better goaltending and defense than anyone else and we take high quality shots instead of volume shots" it's followed very quickly by a collapse.
