I didnt see tonight's but if true then that's several games in a row with this.
As always, people will focus on his offense and forget his gaffes. It's insane. Mike Green 2.0. He's had moments like this all season, INCLUDING the other night (like, why are you in the neutral zone while we are scoring? You weren't doing anything at the other end either!). That's great, you can outscore your problems, but when you're CREATING them, it's an issue. Why do more people not see this? Oh, because like with Doughty, they aren't watching...and those that are watching are ignoring the d-side.
Again, people will dismiss it with "every d-man makes mistakes," but that minimizes just how freaking often he gets caught in an ill-advised pinch, stuck behind the play after a blocked shot or turnover, or flat out burned on defense.
I will 100% be impressed if he gets 80+ points because that's an amazing feat for any player. But that's also 100% besides the point, you give anyone free reign deployment on a bad team and completely look past their mistakes they'll put up points. Maybe not like Karlsson because he has a special offensive talent, but it's a shame his all-around game is being wasted to pad point totals. I bash his defensive game because of what it is, but we've seen at time and in the Olympics what it CAN be; the guy CAN be flat out dominant, nearly Lidstrom-like, so it's appalling to watch him fumble around like a drunk monkey in the defensive zone here as he's planning his next offensive move.
To be fair, Doughty is basically nearly his polar opposite--full on has the capability to be dominant offensively all the time, but doesn't, and instead plays elite defense. Just as frustrating, for sure.
