Columbus just started too poorly. 0-7, all losses in regulation. They're basically playing a 75 game season while most other teams got a decent head start on them. 11-12-3 since that start. Look at Calgary and Anaheim. They've been alright in terms of their records since their bad starts, and they're in the Pacific, but only now are they crawling back into the race.
You can come back from 0-7. Still plenty of points available, take it 1 game at a time. But not if you're only going to get 25 points in the next 26 games. That gets you from last in the league to last in the league.
The Jackets are a good case for every season really being different. They were the hottest team in the league at the end of last year. They add Saad. A couple 70 point players returning. Bobrovsky in net. Questionable defense, but most had them in the mix in the Metro. Then as hot as they were to end the season, they were equally as ice cold to start this year. Plus NJ comes out of nowhere.
