That's the format everyone agreed to. It's not about right and wrong. Them's would be the breaks. You beat who you have to beat.
Exactly . The fans in some of the EC cities don't like it because there are 8 teams in each division and it's a lot harder to qualify.
And look at the plight of the Jets, who are not in a playoff spot but if they were in the pacific would be tied for 2nd.
It's not the best system but it's the one that was agreed upon, so you have to live with it.
Goal Scoring - you know how there have been ideas tossed around (some of which the GM's will be talking about that GM meetings) to increase scoring, like making the nets bigger or slimming down the ridiculous goalie eqiupment that turns mere mortals in size into transformers.
Well there is abstract idea to bring back full 2min penalties, killing off the entire penalty regardless of how many goals are scored. That was the original rule but Jean Belivieu had a hatrick on the PP , scoring all 3 in 44 seconds in 1955, part of a dominant force. The reason for this was because the Montreal Canadiens were so dominant on the power play, the NHL needed a way of ensuring parity. The previous season saw the Canadiens score 26% of all the league's power play goals. So the rule was changed that once you scored, the PP was done.
This was an idea that has been tossed around in the past but with the increase in goal scoring a top priority, it might be revisited.

MTL puts Alex Semin on waivers.
Not really surprised. Loaded with talent, empty on heart.
