Blues name Yeo Head Coach, for 2017

St. Louis Blues ‏@StLouisBlues 14m14 minutes ago

Mike Yeo will take over as the #stlblues head coach beginning with the 2017-18 season. http://*******/1OluNDV

Hitch's expiration date is 3 yrs, should have let him go after this past one , not giving the extra. Good for Yeo...

The champagne hasn't dried at SAP Center, but the NHL is whirring into action. Couple signings today, first buyout window opens Wednesday.

Interesting.
Yeo is a good coach, this is a unique way to transition their coach. Giving Yeo the job already will give a voice to the blue's coaching staff this next year.

The flames GM was just on the radio saying they will have their coach by the draft. Sounds like could be this week.

It's really weird to announce a coaching change that is not effective until after the upcoming season.

very, but usually teams do not know they have a coach who is retiring after the next year. This allows them to bring someone in this year as an assistant with promotion. Good on the blues for taking advantage of the situation.

If the blues falter I could see Hitchcock being moved out mid season

Hitchcock won't last the season. The Blues were dumb for extending him 2 seasons ago, much less this past season.

I thought he wouldn't last the season going into this year. IT would not surprise me to see him last the whole year next year. If for no other reason as it owuld be bad PR for the blues to can a future hall of famer when he has announced it will be his last year

Totally disagree, and I get that some of that is because he was king and elected to leave, but he finished 3rd in the NHL in wins and in his first full year in the league, was a large part of the reason the SHarks were in the SCF. He stopped 191 of the 205 shots he face thru 6 games and in 3 of them faced 40 or more. There was nothing about his performance that qualifies as 'meh'.
The SHarks played well and had a great run, coming up short and losing to a better team. They have a good defense and a good young goalie, like any team that comes up short , they'll make the adjustments and go at next year and they do have a solid chance to go deep again, mostly because Jones is a very talanted goalie who is technically sound, controls the crease well and doesn't crack under pressure.

Compared to the praise that was heaped at him, he was 'meh.' He didn't have to do much the first three series and was below .920. He played well in the Cup Final but as soon as he rocked ONE game people were drooling over the Conn Smythe.

My point is that people are using a different lens. SJ media and some others wanted him to be a savior so badly that all the softies are excused and one performance is being used as a symbol that he's elite when there are plenty of other goalies out there, even in these playoffs, that were MUCH more impressive. He was literally average in these playoffs by every metric but wins, and I watched all but 2 of the Sharks' games. He had issues tracking the puck often, kicked out horrible rebounds, and let in quite a few softies--he was just often bailed out by the Sharks being crazymode.

So I'll say it again--if Jonathan Quick puts up that performance, we get a main board thread proclaiming his demise. But since Martin Jones did it, MVP.

Agree that each fan uses his/her own 'lens' to view a player. I don't agree with your assessment of Jones, as we 'see' him differently. I see a talented young goalie who like any young goalie, needs time , experience and minutes in every game situation to improve.

And Jonathan Quick didn't play 65 games in this first NHL season, finish 3rd in wins and get his team to the SCF.

I don't agree with using Quick in any comparison as he's older and has a seasoned vet with almost 500 regular season games under his belt. Jones has less than 100.

Nobody would have been proclaiming Quick's 'demise' if he'd have done what Jones did in his first NHL season.

THat's probably fair.

I just think Jones is getting SCF recency bias because before that he was below league average everything. Agree to disagree though.

Last June, I was in Vegas for the NHL Awards. The Sharks were getting 55-1 odds and my buddy had me put a $50 bet for him. When they made the Finals, I figured I was in a good spot.

A) If the Sharks won, I could be happy for him to use that money towards his wedding later this year. He also promised to treat me to a nice meal for putting the wager down.

B) If the Sharks lost, I could make fun of him relentlessly for almost winning. Or be the annoying second guesser "I would have just bet on them winning the Conference."

His birthday is in a few weeks. I'm probably gonna be a jerk and get him a Conference champions shirt/hat if they go on clearance in time.

A San Jose fan not hedging that bet once they made the SCF can only mean they haven't been a San Jose fan for very long :sarcasm:

It's easier to put up gaudy numbers though when you're busy. Quick himself is the poster-keeper for that notion, as you know.

A lot of Jones Smythe buzz was due to the fact that no one on the Penguins really had that signature, lights out slam-dunk CS run, like Lemieux in '91 or Gretzky in '85. That combined with Pavelski going AWOL in the finals.

I'm hearing candidates for the @AnaheimDucks head coaching job are being told Randy Carlyle will be the choice. Coached their 5+ years.

I heard a lot talk of Jones compared to Price this morning in the media . Not so fast guys, he's played one season and was only tested in the finals. He's gonna be a good goalie, but lets let a few season get under his belt first before calling him the next one,

Not even Patrick Roy could take that 09-10 roster to the SCF. Quick didn't have a championship caliber team ready for him.
