Pelletier in the dzone with Sharangovich and Kuzmenko

Shango's not bad in his own end down the middle.
Honestly, when he plays centre he's just not effective as a scorer.
It's one of those "Needs to figure out the balance between when to play defensive, and when to go for offense". It's like on the wing, he cheats for offense heavily, and as a C, he focuses so much on playing the role he forgets that he can score too.

4. I was talking with another executive who said the Oilers and their opponents will be on high alert for how games are called in the aftermath. Do the Oilers get more power plays? Is there any bias against them? Teams worry about overcompensation. The situations are not comparable, but Calgary’s penalty count went from 30th to fourth after Dennis Wideman high-sticked a linesman in 2016. So the paranoia exists.

Always a fun reminder

Yup, for the last few years, after a call against us, or non call on our opponents, I've been saying Thanks Wideman quite a bit. Dude never saw another NHL game after that with us or any other organization. Team shouldn't have been messed over by the refs for so long for one buffoon's behavior.

Rooney still in the lineup is strong evidence that Conroy & Huska are team tank. Otherwise, they could ice a deeper lineup easily:

Huberdeau-Kadri-Pospisil
Coleman-Zary-Coronato
Farabee-Frost-Sharangovich
Lomberg-Backlund-Klapka

Also, #FreeSolo

Bahl-Andersson
Solo-Weeegar
Hanley-Pachal

Nah, you know what? I’m cool with this to start.

Except for the ongoing Roondog love fest, of course lol

Just a reminder, these are practice lines with a reduced roster.

With guys being sent to the AHL during the break and Ras not back yet, the Flames were left with 12 forwards and 7 defensemen, including Zary and Bahl who are still on IR.

The Flames will be calling up at least 1 forward still who could very easily replace Rooney on the 4th line.

I'd like to see Bishop recalled to push Rooney to 13F, then Miro waived/demoted in favor of Solo.

I’d honestly rather take Kerins back, better on the dot and more offensively inclined than Bish. But they might not see it as being beneficial to Kerins’ development, besides the fact that they already have guys with NHL games under their belt.

Bump Backs down to the fourth line with Lombo and Klapper, and have Zary line up at C with Coleman when he comes back. I still hope we see Poirier at some point before the season is done, couldn’t be any worse that what they’ve been rolling with already.

Huby-Naz-Pospy
Rango-Frosty-Coro
Coleman-Zary/Kerins-Farabee
Lombo-Backs-Klapper

Bahl-Raz
Poi/Solo-Weegs
Solo/Hanley-Patches
Hanley/Miro

They're not gong to bump Backlund down to the 4th line, nor should they. Frankly he's becoming extremely underrated around here. He's no longer a low end #2C/elite #3, but he's still a 3C. He just needs to come off the PP.

Also the irony of putting Pospisil on the first line when he's producing less than Backlund who you deem to be a 4th liner.

I put Pospy on the top line because he’s capable of top-10 speed in the NHL, in addition to the space he creates with his physicality. This can allow for chances off the rush with Huby, as well as give Naz and Huby room to operate. He may have hands of solid stone, but Pospy is still our best option for 1RW. One of the few things I agree with Huska on.

Backlund, on the other hand, skates like he’s stuck in second gear, isn’t particularly physical, or creative, the play dies on his stick more often than not, plays with zero passion, and really not a whole lot better defensively than Zary, who is faster and can produce more, hence why I put him where I did. Backs is decent down low and along the half wall, and he’s just an ok penalty killer, but he is mid as mid can be. He has never been “elite”, and he is on his last legs, but I think playing with Lombo and Klapka would force a side out of his game that we’ve yet to see, and allow them to line up Naz-Frosty-Zary (none of whom deserve to be on the fourth line either) down the middle.

Skating well doesn't make a lick of difference if you can't keep up mentally, which sees Pospisil in situations where he either makes big mistakes r takes penalties.

You’re absolutely right, and trust me, I get frustrated asf watching him sometimes make the bonehead play and then compensate by taking a stupid lazy penalty, but in terms of skillset and how our guys match up, I maintain that he’s still the best option with Naz and Huby. Pospy is a weird one, it’s like the only two places in our lineup that he really fits is either 1RW or 4RW, but I’m a huge advocate for having Klapper in the lineup, and I’m not sure he’s ready to pull 1RW duty, or if he ever will be. Way silkier hands than Pospy though, truth be told.

Not saying they're remotely the same caliber.
Remember what people were saying about Bennett when he was here too?

Id argue hes still an elite #3C. Problem is the Flames are atrocious at faceoffs and hes taking an obscene amount on the PK. The Flames desperately need a defensive minded right handed center to roll on the 4th line. Get that and Backs responsibilities can be cut back to something more manageable. At least Frost is now on the team to handle more 5on5 and the 2nd PP unit.

this is in part why I like Bishop for the 4th line, he may be a lefty but his game translates well to being a defensively reliable 4C

He could be the 13th guy or on the wing. I think this season has shown the Flames how dire the need is for a right handed center to take and win draws.
