It's the method in which you "attack" JK. It's subtle, but I can see it.

Not even going to read the rest of that post. I've said my peace and just reading a line or two I can tell that you aren't saying anything new.

Sorry, I find the 50 contract limit discussion comical. Not sure which myth you are talking about; but Howson's mismanagement of Mason (and goal tending in general) is epic and legendary. That you would even attempt to create a way to defend it baffles me.

I don't want to talk about that dude from Edmonton anymore and, if you realize it or not, you seem to have a chip on your shoulder about it.

I don't let my feelings about the Hitch firing influence my opinions of Richards(on).

Looks like we're going to have to agree to disagree.

Or as I call it, "both sides walk away feeling that they won".:p:

Since I was trying to achieve a victory, beyond expressing my opinion, you can claim whatever you want. For that matter, I wasn't even seeking your agreement - it's irrelevant to me. I certainly wasn't looking for your deep analysis; I've seen it before. I knew, roughly, what you were going to say.

As far as I'm concerned it wasn't even a debate. A lot of this I've covered before (and I've heard all the responses - some being more verbose than others), beyond my belief that you aren't being objective with JK. You aren't. Not seeking your agreement or even acknowledgement. It is actually irrelevant to me what your response is. Your future postings in other contexts will tell me whether you you've changed or not.

Some time back, my wife bet me a dollar that I'd end up acknowledging that you're a mirror of me.

Looks like I'll be a dollar poorer.;)

15 games for Thornton

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=438984

Disappointed, personally. I thought the NHL could have sent a clear message here and made a point about malicious attacks. Raffi Torres got 25 games for a hit that only a few years ago would have been a legal check ... all because of past history? Past history shouldn't have mattered here. This should have been a clear case, such as the Todd Bertuzzi one several years ago.

Instead, the NHL's message is, if your goon knocks out a player from another team, it's pretty much okay, because he'll be back before the important games.

Thorton should have gotten more. Neal's knee was gross as well. Orpik probably should have née suspended for e pancake of Ericksson. It was a bad game.

I just don't get why Pitt is always in these games (like that one with the isle a couple years back with over 260 PIM)

What was wrong with the Orpik hit? Shoulder to the front of another player's shoulder isn't legal now?

I agree with you that the Neal play was ugly ... both suspensions could (should) have been longer. Pascal Dupuis should have been called to the office for his leg breaking slash as well ... but the Orpik hit was a hockey play. That, in my opinion, is part of what makes Thornton's retaliation so disgusting.

Easily one of the dirtiest hits you will ever see:

Caution: This video contains a violent hit to the head and an injured teenager. Also, it contains homer filled commentary by the Portland Winterhawk broadcast team, who immediately attempts to justify the hit by pointing to earlier incidents in the game - while the player still lays in a heap at center ice.

Brendan Leipsic has subsequently been suspended for 7 games by the Western Hockey League. This is his second suspension this year.

Equally disturbing are the morons who appear to be cheering while a player lies motionless on the ice. I understand the quick reactive cheer for a big hit but to continue while a player is out is just poor taste.

I'll take everyone's word on the video, I'm sure it is disturbing. My opinion on these crushing hits is the same for hockey or football. You will not see any real rule changes until someone dies on the field or the ice. This is not 1950 anymore where all the players are "normal" size. I would venture a guess (because I really am too lazy to research) that the average player is probably 2-3 inches taller and 15-20 pounds heavier than even those that played in the '80s and '90s. Combine that with faster players and it's going to happen.

I like physical play, but some of the hits in both sports I see today, I come away asking if some of these hits are even necessary. Frankly, it has become sort of sickening to see an unsuspecting player get blown up and the injuries they have to endure. For sure in hockey hits from behind have to stop and in football, hits with the crown of the helmet (regardless of point of contact) have to stop. I know that both sports have taken some steps, but I don't think you'll see real change until something very unfortunate happens.

I will provide one example for you: Jean Béliveau, one of the all-time greats of the game, played from 1950 to 1971 and was considered to be a very large player for the time. He was 6'3" and 205 lbs., the same size listed for Curtis McEllhinny and two inches taller and a pound heavier than Marian Gaborik, neither of whom would be thought of as "big" today.

I'm inclined to agree with this general sentiment. I'd wonder if the additional padding/gear, intended to be a defensive aid to a player, doesn't have something to do with it, too. And I've wondered about the size/speed of players playing on the same size rink as 'back in the day'.

Ultimately, though, it seems to me there's something amiss among the players themselves, though. I enjoy hard checking, and the occasional fight, and for sure some shoving and what-have-you post whistle (in fact, I want the CBJ to do more of it around their net). But there is a lot of high-violence play, guys who appear to be targeting other guys, especially coming "across" to the head/neck area. I know the play in immediate question isn't an "across" play, just speaking in general.

A couple years ago I played NHLXX (think it was 11 maybe) that had the classic teams. I played the Jackets against one of the early years of the Habs and absolutely destroyed them because they were all 5-8 to 5-10 and 165lbs!

That action alone is probably worth 3 Classless Subbans on the 5 point scale.

When I was in high school the average center on the basket ball teams was 6"3'. Average guard was 5'7"
