As of the moment, the Jackets seem to have a nice lock on being the league-averagiest of all the league-average teams in terms of scoring stats

http://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/CBJ/2014.html

17th in Goals For (101 compared to league average of 103), 17th in Goals Against (106 compared to 103), 18.18% power play compared to league average of 18.11%, 23/126 on the penalty kill for 81.75% compared to league average of 23/127 for 81.89%. 4 shorties for, 3 against compared to averages of 3 and 3.

Obviously the big issue is that the team is at 36 points instead of a league average of 43...

But given everything that's happened so far this season, I'll take being league average at Christmas.

And 11-7-4 in the last 22 games isn't bad either.

With so many top guys on the shelf, I'll take it.

I certainly respect Richards more than I did last year. Granted, opinions about a coach can change quickly but Richards seems to have the players listening and doing the right things. Maybe it's the composition of the team and simply the "guys" we have like Johnson, Dubinsky, Foligno, Mackenzie, etc. But you also hear players like Gaborik, Johansen, and Anisimov saying "coach told me to do this..." and it's obvious they are buying in.

It's never easy with so many players on the shelf and the youth of our team. It's also not easy when you have so many players who don't speak English perfectly or are new to the team. But it doesn't seem like players are left out. If you see the players out in public, often it's with a teammate or two as opposed to past years when they would go out by themselves to the bar or a restaurant.

Our special teams could be better. And yes, it does seem that the players are stealing momentum in games more than the coach himself, but I think Richards is a much better coach than Arniel. Not saying much? Probably, but take Johansen's development for instance. Richards was hard on Joey, very hard. But in hindsight we can see it was simply a case of the ol' coach being coach, knowing he can get much more out of a player and challenging him in constructive, meaningful ways. Now Joey is getting rewarded.

Not a good night for the Jackets yesterday.

Despite Mason's best efforts Philly beat the Oil in a SO, and N.J. Beat the Isles.

On a side note, WOW, what a game in St. Louis!

The people sitting at the top of the stadium for today's Winter Classic have to have telescopes to see that ice surface. They are ridiculously far away.

The first rows are terrible seats, and all the seats are far away. I like the Classic and don't mean to criticize, but I wonder if it's worth it as a fan? I mean the atmosphere is probably great, but it must be pretty odd to be at the game and watching from so far away. Wonder what the noise level is like, too. I love that soooo many people are there.

Today is nice, even with all that snow really slowing things down.

Also, in the countdown of top ten plays in the classic, who woulda thunk a Crosby shootout goal was #1? :sarcasm:

edit: Wings just score- kick?

I love the concept and think that it pertains well to the casual fan ... but to the hardcore, passionate fans, it's just another game. And, one that I wouldn't pay to see, for exactly the reasons you just posted. I'd rather sit in my recliner in my warm house, where I can see much better - and save the money.

I still love the concept, although I wish they'd do one Winter Classic a year and one Heritage Classic in Canada every two years and leave it at that. As a kid, I spent more time skating on outdoor rinks than indoor rinks and there is that connection to fond memories when I watch these. I know that 'return hockey to its roots' is a bit over-played by the NHL during these things, but I do find that the connection to pond hockey is there for me to an extent. For example, a game like today's brings back memories of having the push the puck ahead rather than stick-handling when there was a skiff of snow on the ice.

However, I agree that it is nice watching it on TV rather than being there in person. My brother is at the game now and I wouldn't trade places with him (although these are my two least favorite teams). That said, if there was a game in the Horseshoe one year, I'll be there.

It makes sense when you think about how they play up the tradition of the game for the winter classic and how the shootout has a long and storied history in the NHL. :sarcasm:

Great game and location! I don't ever see the game here in the Shoe though, just not enough interest. It would be embarrassing to have it here and it not sell out.

I like the Winter Classic and would definitely go to a game at the Shoe. I think it is being overdone a bit by having the Stadium Series which is coming up later this month at Dodger Stadium and two in a four day span at Yankee Stadium, followed by a game in early March at Soldier Field. Keep it one or two games on New Years day, less is more.

Obviously not the winter classic, but I went to the OSU vs Michigan game at Jacob's field a few years back and had a good time despite the loss and the freezing cold weather. I figured it was the closest I would ever get too the winter classic. I definintly did not regret it.

I suggest watching highlights of PK Subban's game the other night in Dallas. Amazing.
